Plough profits back into Sarawak's economy, Abg Jo tells businesses in the state
BINTULU (July 23): Local companies that generate profits from operations in Sarawak should reinvest those earnings back into the state's economy, said Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
He cited Shin Yang Group of Companies, which has made significant investments in Sarawak's property sector.
'I appreciate companies like Shin Yang that make money in Sarawak and give back to Sarawak.
'There are also companies making profits here but choosing to invest elsewhere,' he said today when officially opening Imperial Hotel Bintulu – the town's first 5-star hotel.
He urged local industry players to emulate companies that channel their gains into supporting local infrastructure, job creation, and economic growth.
'This kind of investment reflects the private sector's confidence in Bintulu's ongoing development,' he said.
Recounting Bintulu's journey, Abang Johari said the town has evolved from a gas discovery site to a key industrial hub with the establishment of the liquefied natural gas (LNG) plant and Bintulu Port Authority, projects initiated under the leadership former chief ministers the late Tun Datuk Patinggi Abdul Rahman Yakub and continued by the late Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud.
'The transformation began with Kidurong and has now expanded rapidly to Samalaju,' he said, emphasising the need for quality infrastructure, international-standard hotels, and conference facilities to accommodate growing economic activities and foreign visitors.
Abang Johari said when he assumed the role of Chief Minister in 2017, he committed to launching Bintulu's 'second wave' of development.
This included the opening of new areas such as Kampung Jepak, where he promised to build a bridge connecting the old town with the new development.
'I had said Jepak Jaya would be like Petra Jaya in Kuching. Now in 2025, that vision is being realised,' he said.
Abang Johari pointed out Bintulu has been recognised by the World Economic Forum as one of the world's 36 Emerging Transition Industrial Clusters – one of only two in Asia.
'Now we are being watched by the world, the potential of Bintulu meaning, not only we provide low carbon industry but also provide basic infrastructure including properties and comfortable hotel and venue for conferences,' he said.
To further enhance connectivity, he outlined plans for the Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART) system powered by hydrogen to link Kidurong to Samalaju with Bintulu as the central hub.
Abang Johari also highlighted plans to reinforce water and power supply in Bintulu.
'A 500MW gas turbine power plant is currently under construction, with another 500MW plant planned eventually providing 1GW power capacity to meet growing demand from both locals and investors,' he said.
With anticipated population growth, Abang Johari said Bintulu will also require international schools and other supporting infrastructure.
'There will be continued investment from both the government and private sector. With this, Bintulu will continue to grow and prosper,' he said.

Cambodian Senior Minister in Charge of Special Missions (Islamic Affairs) Oknha Datuk Dr Othsman Hassan said they are considering sending their students to further their education in fields like engineering, accounting and law. 'So far, no student from Cambodia has pursued further education in Sarawak because Cambodian students who received scholarships are all placed in Kuala Lumpur. 'We hope the Sarawak Premier (Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg) will support the intake of these students… the total number of students has yet to be determined,' he said after paying a courtesy call on the Sarawak Premier at Kompleks Satria Pertiwi here today. 'So, high school students from Phnom Penh will be invited to study at this international school because it will take into account the intake of students from RISEAP member countries,' he said. ‘Shared home': Sarawak premier urges Asean, China to keep South China Sea peaceful
KUCHING, Aug 14 — Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has urged Asean and China to maintain stability and foster constructive cooperation in the South China Sea to ensure continued peace and prosperity in the region. Speaking at a gala dinner held in conjunction with the 24th Asean–China Senior Officials' Meeting on the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea (DOC) here yesterday, Abang Johari said the meeting symbolised a collective commitment to safeguard the region. 'This region is our shared home and together we have the responsibility to ensure it remains a sea of peace and prosperity,' he said. Also present was Foreign Ministry secretary-general Datuk Seri Amran Mohamed Zin. Abang Johari also recalled the enduring spirit of the Zone of Peace, Freedom and Neutrality (ZOPFAN), inspired by the 1955 Bandung Conference and leaders such as Indonesia's Soekarno, India's Jawaharlal Nehru and China's Zhou Enlai, saying it remains relevant to Asean's approach today. Abg Jo confident Asean-China talks will strengthen cooperation over South China Sea

Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the 24th Asean-China Senior Officials' Meeting on the Implementation of the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea (DOC), which has been taking place here since Aug 11, provides an important platform for constructive dialogue and closer collaboration between the two sides. 'I believe this conference will result in stronger cooperation between Asean and China, particularly in discussions concerning laws governing the South China Sea. 'I would like to thank the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for choosing Kuching as the venue, given that we are facing the South China Sea,' he told reporters after attending the State Gala Dinner held in conjunction with the meeting last night. On past incidents involving the presence of foreign vessels in Malaysian waters, Abang Johari said Sarawak does not regard them as acts of intrusion, but rather as activities that had taken place in the South China Sea. 'I believe there must be a resolution in light of possible weaknesses that may have taken place. 'Just now (Ministry of Foreign Affairs secretary-general) Datuk Seri Amran (Mohamed Zin) had mentioned the importance of compliance with international law, and if the discussions are within that framework, it will certainly be a win-win situation for both parties,' he said. In his speech, Abang Johari said Sarawak is deeply honoured to host the meeting in Kuching.
