Sunday's briefing: England U21s continue Euros defence as PSG begin CWC campaign

Under-21s boss Carsley expects more
England Under-21s boss Carsley insisted his side still had plenty to improve on, despite a winning start at the European Championship.
Goals from Harvey Elliott, Jonathan Rowe and Charlie Cresswell saw Croatia defeated 3-1, with Sunday's game against Slovenia providing a chance to cement their place in the knockout rounds.
'It might seem a bit clunky at times, unstructured, but I thought the players took on board what we tried to do, lots of positives, the Czechs had good chances as well so lots to improve,' said Carsley.
'The longer I feel we can stay in the competition, the more clean our play will become.'
Dembele has Ballon d'Or dreams
Champions League winner Ousmane Dembele is chasing the 'holy grail' of the Ballon d'Or.
The forward's performances were integral to Paris St Germain's inaugural triumph in Europe's premier club competition but having conquered that challenge, the 28-year-old is looking to emulate his idol and former Barcelona team-mate Lionel Messi.
'Winning a Ballon d'Or when you're a footballer is obviously the holy grail on an individual level. It's something you dream of as a child,' Dembele told France Football.
'I've had difficult years with injuries, weak performances as well. This season I think I've been consistent, so we'll see what happens.
'It would be exceptional to have my name on the list and to be one of the favourites is already a great victory, although I hope to win it one day.
Bright future ahead for FC United
FC United want to continue being an 'antidote' to modern football as the breakaway club celebrate their 20th anniversary.
The Glazer family's controversial takeover at Manchester United was the catalyst for the club's foundation on June 14, 2005, offering an affordable, inclusive and fan-owned alternative for disenfranchised supporters.
FCUM reached the National League North and built a 4,900-capacity stadium within a decade and now the goal is for the Northern Premier League Premier Division side to kick on again.
'I think the future's bright. I think we're about to enter into our next grand phase,' chair Nick Boom told the PA news agency.
'We've spent a lot of time trying to kind of get the club into a position where it's financially stable and it feels like we now have got to a position where we can kind of invest.'
What's on today?
Champions League winners Paris St Germain take on Atletico Madrid in an early glamour tie in the Club World Cup. Bayern Munich against Auckland City offers less allure. England Under-21s could secure progress to the European Championship knockout stage with victory over Slovenia.

PSG thrash Atletico Madrid 4-0 to kick off Club World Cup campaign

LOS ANGELES, June 15 (Reuters) - Champions League winners Paris St Germain crushed fellow European heavyweights Atletico Madrid 4-0 at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena on Sunday to get their Club World Cup campaign off to a winning start. PSG landed the first blow in the Group B clash when Fabian Ruiz fired home from distance in the 19th minute as they showed no signs of rust in their first match since trouncing Inter Milan 5-0 to win their first Champions League title last month. PSG doubled their advantage just before halftime when an Antoine Griezmann miss led to a counter-attack that ended with Vitinha firing home under sunny skies in Southern California. The LaLiga side appeared to have pulled one back when Julian Alvarez found the net in the 57th minute but it was overturned after a VAR review determined Koke had fouled Desire Doue in the leadup to the strike, with Atletico coach Diego Simeone sarcastically applauding the decision from the sideline. The Spanish side's nightmare continued when defender Clement Lenglet was sent off after receiving a second yellow card and Alexander Sorloth inexplicably missed what should have been a tap-in, instead sending it over the bar. Substitute Senny Mayulu added a third goal for PSG in the 87th minute to end any hopes of an Atletico comeback, while Lee Kang-in fired home a stoppage-time penalty to round off the scoring. PSG will be back at the Rose Bowl on Thursday to face Brazilian team Botafogo while Atletico will travel north to Seattle to take on MLS side the Seattle Sounders. "The hardest thing to do in football is to maintain the level, not just going high and low," Vitinha, who was named man of the match, said. "That's what I tried to do. Very good performance by the team and a very good start to this competition." PSG were without Frenchman and Ballon d'Or favourite Ousmane Dembele, who suffered an injury while playing for France in the UEFA Nations League earlier this month, but they hardly needed him on Sunday. They had 74% possession and 11 shots on target compared to Atletico Madrid's one. The historic Rose Bowl in Pasadena was rocking thanks to the 80,000 fans who turned out amid the hot midday sun one year before the U.S. will co-host the World Cup along with Mexico and Canada. "It was a different environment but it feels good to see so many people in the USA here to watch soccer, or to watch football, as I say," Vitinha added.

Man Utd identify Viktor Gyokeres alternative and hold upper hand over rivals

Manchester United are in the market for a new No.9 this summer but have seemingly switched their focus from Viktor Gyokeres with the Sweden striker keen on a move to Arsenal Manchester United are said to be the only club who have made contact with Eintracht Frankfurt over Hugo Ekitike as they search for a new striker, with Viktor Gyokeres now favouring a move to Arsenal. Gyokeres, 27, has been heavily linked with United in recent months after another stellar season for Sporting Lisbon. The Swede is well known by Ruben Amorim, who worked with him in Portugal before moving to Old Trafford last year. ‌ But with Arsenal also in the frame and able to offer Champions League football, reports in Portugal claim Gyokeres is not currently angling for a move to Old Trafford. ‌ United have since switched their focus to Ekitike and, according to Bild, have already expressed their interest in the Frenchman to Eintracht Frankfurt. The report adds that, as things stand, United are the only club to make contact with the Bundesliga outfit despite recent links to both Chelsea and Liverpool. And as well stealing a march on their rivals, Markus Krösche, the sporting director at Frankfurt, is said to be friends with United's head of recruitment, Christopher Vivell, plus Ekitike is thought to be 'open' to the idea of moving to Manchester. Ekitike, 22, enjoyed a stellar season for Frankfurt, who finished third in the Bundesliga despite losing the services of Omar Marmoush to Manchester City in January. The German outfit also have form for securing top money for their elite stars including Marmoush, who joined City for a huge transfer fee in the winter window, and Randal Kolo Muani in recent years. ‌ It's said that Frankfurt value the France Under-21 star at around £85million - a sum which could prove too rich for United, who have already splashed £62.5m on a deal for Matheus Cunha and could end up spending a similar sum to bring Bryan Mbeumo in too. Mbeumo is expected to leave Brentford this summer but is also attracting interest from Tottenham, who have just appointed the Bees' boss, Thomas Frank, as their new manager. ‌ The Cameroon star did not comment on transfer speculation during an impromptu interview at the Canadian Grand Prix but did tip Frank to be a big hit at Spurs, telling Sky Sports: "He's done so much for me. "He literally trusted me from the start [at Brentford] and he developed the team so well. He developed me as a human and a player so much as well. I can only wish him all the best and I'm sure he's going to do well." He added: "He knows everything; he's really smart and knows what he wants to bring the team, how he wants them to play. He's been fantastic for Brentford." Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content. Jamal Musiala hits hat-trick as Bayern Munich put 10 past Auckland

Vincent Kompany's Bundesliga champions led 6-0 at half-time of the Group C contest in Cincinnati thanks to braces from Kingsley Coman and Michael Olise, plus finishes from Sacha Boey and Thomas Muller. Having been unable to add his name to the scoresheet against the outclassed New Zealand part-timers, England captain Kane was replaced by Musiala with 29 minutes remaining. The substitute claimed Bayern's next three goals, with his second coming from the penalty spot, before Muller completed the biggest win in the competition's history by doubling his tally late on. Champions League winners Paris St Germain thrashed Atletico Madrid 4-0 in their Group B meeting at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena. First-half goals from Fabian Ruiz and Vitinha put Luis Enrique's side in control. Atletico were reduced to 10 men 12 minutes from time when defender Clement Lenglet was dismissed for a second bookable offence before Senny Mayulu stretched PSG's lead and fellow substitute Lee Kang-in added a late penalty.
