Netflix's ‘divisive' new comedy series has fans ‘in a chokehold'
Tyler Perry's new political sitcom She the People dropped its first eight episodes this week
Tyler Perry's new Netflix venture has subscribers divided, with some calling it "hilarious" and others branding it "horrible".
The political sitcom She the People features Terri J. Vaughn as Antoinette Dunkerson, who finds herself in hot water after being elected Lieutenant Governor of Mississippi.
Upon her election victory, she quickly realises the enormity of her role when she meets her boss, Governor Harper (portrayed by Robert Craighead), a man whose views are firmly rooted in the past.
Her family, including cousin and campaign manager Shamika (Jade Novah), also grapple with the cultural shifts they face in the Deep South following their move.
The first eight episodes of the 16-part debut season landed on Netflix this Thursday (22nd May), with the remaining episodes expected to drop in the coming months, reports the Mirror US.
Social media is abuzz with viewers sharing their thoughts on the show, many finding amusement in Perry's trademark comedic style and incisive social observations.
One viewer exclaimed on X (formerly Twitter): "with the LEGENDARY #JoMariePayton in #SheThePeople is what I didn't know I was lacking on my TV until now!!!"
Another viewer commented: "She the People on Netflix is funny as f*** [crying emojis]."
A third chimed in: "Yall She The People on Netflix might got me in a chokehold [laughing emojis] episode two only tho this s*** funny."
And yet another offered their verdict: "She the people on Netflix 10/10 lol funny asf."
One fan couldn't contain their amusement, exclaiming: "Y'all watching She The People on Netflix it's so funny lmfaoo."
Yet, not everyone is chuckling along with the new series; a number of Netflix viewers have voiced their disappointment, suggesting that the humour just isn't hitting the mark.
A viewer expressed their dissatisfaction, posting: "Tried watching the new Tyler Perry comedy on #Netflix...She The People starring Terri Vaughn. But ain't nothing funny about it."
Another was even more critical, blasting: "She the people on netflix is horrible [crying emoji]."
Regardless of the mixed reviews, fans and critics alike can expect another eight episodes of She the People to land this summer.
The question remains whether Tyler Perry's latest comedic endeavour will garner enough laughs and love for a second season – stay tuned for further news.
She the People season 1, part 1 is available to stream on Netflix. Part 2 will be released on Thursday, 14th August.

Rose West welcomes granddaughter after paedophile son has baby with former model
Serial killer Rose West has become a grandmother again after her paedophile son Stephen, 51, and his fiancée Emma Bradley, 39, welcomed a baby girl named Eden. Rose West has welcomed another grandchild into the world after her son fathered a child with an ex-glamour model. Stephen West and his betrothed Emma Bradley are now parents to little Eden, yet 71 year old Rose, behind bars serving a whole life term, will never meet her newest grandchild due to Stephen severing all contact with his notorious mother. Despite the trepidation of Emma's kin over their romance, given Stephen's past conviction in 2004 for underage sex offences, the couple forged ahead. The 51 year old who once lived in the gruesome family home confessed: "There's a bit of my dad in me." His infamous father, Fred West, committed a series of murders with Rose between 1967 and 1987 in Gloucestershire. In 1995, Fred was discovered deceased in his cell. Nearly three decades into her incarceration, Rose has reportedly ceased efforts to contest her judgment since 2001 and seems to accept her fate in prison. Now, insiders relay to The Sun that Stephen and Emma plan to exchange vows come August at Newport's Celtic Manor hotel, reports the Mirror. Despite this happy occasion, it is understood from a source that Emma's family remains unsupportive of the match, discomforted by Stephen and citing "a rift" created in the family. Emma, a trained nurse stationed at Gloucester Royal Hospital, brings two daughters from a former relationship into the fold. Following unsettling reports indicating that Rose may be struggling with her health and has been transferred to a disabled room in prison "because she can barely walk," Emma disclosed that she and her partner were oblivious as they maintain no contact. Acknowledging that they've watched the new Netflix documentary Fred and Rose West: A British Horror Story, Emma revealed that her fiancé Stephen "doesn't want to say anything because his main priority is the little ones." She elaborated: "He is adamant, at this time of his life he's got a young family to protect." Stephen, himself a grandfather, has eight children from two previous marriages. As for Rose's experiences behind bars, an insider divulged to The Sun: "She never really leaves the wing she's held on and is escorted all the time by prison officers if she goes anywhere. Sometimes she sits in the communal areas on her own. "No one talks to her because everyone knows who she is and what she did, even if she has changed her name. When I was there, she tried to make friends with the other women and gave them gifts, like vapes, but she was rejected. She likes to watch nature documentaries on the TV in her cell, especially ones about birds." In an effort to distance herself from her heinous acts, it's purported that West shelled out £36 to officially adopt the name Jennifer Jones. Reports suggest she went through the deed poll process last December, expressing to acquaintances that it represents a step towards moving forward. Nonetheless, her true identity remains common knowledge at the all-female HMP New Hall near Wakefield in West Yorkshire. Some prisoners reject her overtures of companionship, leading her to consume tomato soup solitarily in her cell for breakfast, followed by prolonged periods of knitting and conversing with the television due to her limited mobility. West is currently detained in New Hall's designated section called Rivendell House, where she occupies one of the 30 en-suite cells available to inmates, each furnished with a laptop for ordering food. Inspection reports suggest that the shared spaces in this unit are "more inviting" compared to other areas within the prison.

His childhood friend Matt opted for a white button-down short-sleeved shirt, grey pants and white sneakers for his outing. Damon grew out the grey beard to portray Odysseus in director Christopher Nolan's highly-anticipated adaptation of Homer's The Odyssey. Filming started in late February on the film, which also stars, Tom Holland, Zendaya, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson and Charlize Theron, though it's unclear if filming has yet to wrap. When they took the stage, Affleck joked, 'I trusted Matt would shave the beard before Tudum. And here we are.' They introduced co-stars Teyana Taylor, Steven Yeun, and Catalina Sandino Moreno. Affleck and Damon portray Miami cops whose team's trust begins to fray upon discovering millions in cash in a derelict stash house in Joe Carnahan's crime drama premiering January 16 on Netflix. 'The Rip came out of a deeply personal experience that my friend went through, both as a father and as head of tactical narcotics for the Miami Dade police department,' Carnahan told Tudum last Saturday. 'It's inspired in part by his life and then, by my enduring love for those classic seventies cop thrillers that really valued the character and interpersonal relationships and became touchstones of that era — films like Serpico and Prince of the City and more recently, Michael Mann's Heat.' Sasha Calle, Néstor Carbonell, Lina Esco, Scott Adkins, and Kyle Chandler will also appear in The Rip. The Boston besties co-produced Bill Condon's $30M-budget remake of West End musical Kiss of the Spider Woman, starring Ben's second ex-wife Jennifer Lopez, which hits US theaters October 10. Matt is currently on break from filming Universal Pictures $250M-budget 'mythic action epic' already scheduled to hit theaters on July 17, 2026. The Odyssey marks Damon's third time being directed by Nolan after his 2023 atomic bomb biopic Oppenheimer, and his 2014 sci-fi epic Interstellar. Principal photography officially began February 25 on the IMAX flick, and filming is also expected to take place in Italy, Greece, Morocco, Scotland, Ireland, and the United Kingdom.
