Presenter and actor Ore Oduba breaks down in tears after falling for scam
Presenter, consumer journalist and Strictly star Ore Oduba has revealed that he fell victim to a scam after being contacted by someone he thought was one of his heroes. Oduba, who once taught people how to avoid scams on BBC show Claimed and Shamed, has shared a tearful admission after believing he had been contacted by life coach and author Mel Robbins.
Oduba, 39, has shared a six-minute video on Instagram saying scammers targeted him after he shared his passion for Robbins, who has 20million followers thanks to her life-changing theories - including the book The Let Them Theory.
The scam came after Oduba had appeared on ITV's Loose Women and shared his love of Mel Robbins, then took to social media.
He said: "I reposted that interview, I tagged the Mel Robbins podcast, tagged the Let Me theory, tagged Mel, tagged everybody who cared, and then I got an email from my agent who forwarded on an email from the team at the Mel Robbins podcast. I could have cried - they knew who I was! I got an email from the Mel Robbins podcast team."
He added: "I told Mel everything. How she had changed my life. And I literally said at the end of the email, even for you to know who I am, is everything. Thank you so much for getting in touch."
Oduba broke down in tears as he said he was then invited onto the Robbins' podcast - one of the biggest 15 in the USA. He said: " I'm reading this back and I know exactly how it made me feel at the time. I wrote back and I said, 'Mel, I'm holding back tears. Is this for real? You must have AI helping you correspond with all of these fans.'
"Mel wrote back, "of course it's me - it's Mel Robbins." So then I lost my s**t, I absolutely lost my s**t, in tears on an Avanti West Coast train from Birmingham to London, thinking that my whole life was about to change."
He added: "By the way, I used to host a show about scammers. I have watched enough Watchdog to last a lifetime - that doesn't stop me being in the middle of it. I never thought I'd be the person that would be scammed."
When he calmed down, Oduba realised the email had come from a Gmail address - and Mel Robbins name had been spelled incorrectly. He contacted the Mel Robbins PR team via her official website, and was fake.
He wrote on the Instgram post: " I'm ashamed, I'm embarrassed and I'm human. Did not think I would be the kind of person who could be scammed, but this proves it really can happen to anyone. Especially with the help and manipulation of AI . I'm terrified how easily I was 'hooked'. It was SO convincing, it's scary."
He added: "I've made no secret of how much Mel Robbins, her book and podcast have helped me through a really difficult period.
"Truth is I turned an emotional blind eye to something I so deeply wanted to believe was for me and nearly got myself into a whole heap of trouble (sidenote.. I've realised in making this video how often we do the same thing in relationships too!)
"Listen to your gut, it's most likely telling you the truth. And don't get scammed, it's no fun.
"Still inspired by and love Mel Robbins and so grateful to them for their swift response. I got lucky - it could so easily have been too late."
Ore Oduba is a prominent British TV and radio presenter, actor, and stage performer. He first rose to national attention as the presenter of CBBC's Newsround from 2008 to 2013 and later went on to host shows like The One Show, This Morning, ITV 's game show Hardball, and BBC's charity specials including And They're Off! for Sport Relief.
His big breakthrough came in 2016, when he won the 14th series of Strictly Come Dancing, earning both critical acclaim and mass affection. That victory launched him into further public-facing roles—from guest presenting on BBC Radio 2 to hosting the Strictly Live Tour to performing at events like the Royal Wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.
Beyond broadcasting, Ore is also an accomplished stage actor. Since 2019, he's been in musicals like Grease (UK tour), Curtains (West End debut in January 2020), Pretty Woman (UK & Ireland tour), and roles in The Rocky Horror Show. His screen acting debut was in the BBC drama Noughts + Crosses, and he made it through to the finals of Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins in 2021.
Mel Robbins is an American author, former criminal defense attorney, motivational speaker, podcast host, and former CNN legal analyst. She released her first book, Stop Saying You're Fine, in 2010. In 2011, her TEDx talk 'How to Stop Screwing Yourself Over' introduced her signature '5‑Second Rule' technique—a tool designed to break hesitation and prompt action—amassing tens of millions of views.
Her book The Let Them Theory taught people to focus on what they can control. She is Host of The Mel Robbins Podcast, launched in 2022, which consistently ranks among the top global podcasts with over 187 million downloads.

The David Platt actor, 37, married his fiancee Hanni Treweek on Saturday in a stunning ceremony surrounded by their nearest and dearest. They wed at Manchester Cathedral in front of their friends, family and Jack's Corrie co-stars. Jack and Hanni then headed over to a swanky hotel in the city were the party continued into the evening. However, it seems the partying may have been too much for Colson as he took to social media the following day. The former Craig Tinker star took on a very special role of being part of Jack's groomsmen for the wedding. He was by Jack's side as he said his vows and became a married man. Just before the ceremony, Jack posed for a photo with Colson as they soaked up the moment together. Colson has since shared the snap on his Instagram, but his caption caught the attention of his fans. The Celebrity Big Brother star wrote: "26/8/2025 The Shepherd Wedding." However, many quickly realised Colson had got the date wrong by a month. "Words cannot describe how beautiful yesterday was for us - it was more than perfect the love & energy in the room (and outside) was incredible - our hearts our truly full thank you so much to you all - it means the world to us. Louise Thompson proudly displayed her stoma bag in a yellow bikini as she admitted she feels people staring at her and urged people to 'be kind'. The former Made in Chelsea star, 30, who nearly died when giving birth to her son in 2021, revealed last April that she had been fitted with a stoma after years of battling with ulcerative colitis. Ulcerative colitis is a chronic bowel condition where the colon and rectum become inflamed and small ulcers develop on the colon's lining, which can bleed. A stoma is a surgically-created opening made on the abdomen, which is made to divert the flow of body waste into a medical device, which the person can then empty. But taking to Instagram on Sunday, Louise admitted in a candid post that she us wearing less bikinis and switching to swimsuits, in part because she notices people looking at her stoma. Louise went on to say that she feels confident having her stoma on show now, but gave advice to those unfamiliar with them to 'be kind', not judge and let people with them wear what they want in peace. Sharing a snap and clip of herself in the yellow two-piece, Louise wrote: 'I'm not a big bikini girl these days. I don't think it's a confidence issue, I just really enjoy the comfort of a swimsuit. It's very practical and dare I say it - when you reach your mid 30s I think practicality equates to sophistication. 'There's another thing. I don't LOVE people looking at me that much. Stoma or no stoma. It doesn't happen to me often now I'm a bit older and a mother (gone are the days of men checking me out on the tube or the beach), but regardless of circumstances - you definitely get more attention with a random black or grey bag glued to your abs. Unsurprising really. 'I have no doubt that if I saw someone in a similar situation as me I'd look on in fascination/with curiosity/appreciation for what they might have gone through. It's natural. We are intrigued by uniqueness. We intrigued by medicine and health.' She continued: 'On the note of appreciation I've actually been serving myself lots of self-appreciation recently. Yesterday I got out of the shower and went straight to my phone to write down the words "remember you can get through TOUGH shit, ur tough as nails'" on a WhatsApp thread I have with myself (where I dump all my creative [thoughts]) because I really believed it. I wanted you to too. 'Regardless of the above I feel no shame when I look at my body. I don't attach much emotion to it at all. It just exists. That's the main thing. It's a privilege to exist. Literally. Metaphorically. 'But I fancied giving my tummy a bit of tan time/vit d on holiday… so here she is. The old bod. Me and Winnie hanging out. Wearing her with pride. I think I've still got it. I feel good. I roamed freely in the villa. I didn't feel the need to display my tummy in the beach clubs because tbh I'm not really a big lie down and tan kind of girl anymore. I think I dress really well and v freeely and vvvv ME regardless of my stomach situ.' Louise added: 'I don't feel held back at all, but I know some do and I want to remind anyone out there that doesn't really understand what this is that lots of normal and nice people in the uk have them (100k) and to be kind. 'Don't judge. Let people wear what they want. Ask nice questions if you really can't help it. You might learn something cool. #stoma.' In holiday snaps from earlier this month, Louise showed off her incredible figure in the two-piece, before slipping into a black swimsuit. Louise and fiancé Ryan Libbey have been enjoying a short trip 'just the two of them' at the luxurious Maslina Resort on Hvar island. Louise recently opened up about suffering a 'horrendously debilitating' stoma leak while out in central London. Since her diagnosis, Louise has continued to spread awareness and proudly show off her stoma, which she's nicknamed Winnie, in a hilarious reference to Winnie The Pooh. However, taking to her Instagram on Wednesday, she revealed she'd had a leak the day before, which left her in tears and needing some time out by herself. She explained she had headed to Marylebone with her fiancé Ryan on his motorbike for an appointment and a coffee, before going to record a podcast. However, Louise explained that despite their 'great start', she suddenly realised her stoma bag had unfortunately leaked, forcing her to rush to the nearest hospital for supplies. Sharing several selfies of her and Ryan on their bike journey before everything went wrong, she wrote: 'Yesterday I found myself in a really depressing situation. 'l had a great start to the day. I had a medical appointment at @ in the morning with Ryan... we biked there to get ahead of the traffic and managed to shave off 20 minutes from the journey. 'Then was off to record a podcast with 2x good friends which has been in the diary for ages. Had a lot of excited energy in my belly following a c**p week of of c**p health. 'We got off the bike in Marylebone blissfully happy and headed to @watchhouse for some delicious coffee and cookies pre-recording because we were a smidge early, but then I felt something a bit wet in my pocket. I looked down and had had the most horrendously debilitating stoma leak.' She recounted how she was left 'too overwhelmed' to explain the situation, but Ryan had stepped in, while she was left in a bathroom for an hour waiting for staff to try and source any new stoma bags, while 'covered in mess'. Louise said: ' I had to hobble to the nearest hospital which was a private one so a bit awkward. I was actually too overwhelmed to speak when we got to reception so thankfully Ryan who I was with handled it for me. 'I then literally waited locked in a bathroom for an hour sat on the loo covered in mess whilst they dug around to see if they had any stoma bags for any of their [sic] inpatients.'
