‘Kicking the Acropolis': Adidas drone campaign sparks legal fury in Greece

Malay Mail17-05-2025
ATHENS, May 17 — A promotional video for Adidas featuring a multicoloured trainer on the Acropolis has sparked public outrage in Greece, prompting the government yesterday to announce legal action as no filming permit was granted.
'The legal procedure was not followed,' Culture Minister Lina Mendoni told Skaï radio, describing the imagery as 'extremely unpleasant' and likening it to 'the Adidas shoe... kicking the Acropolis'.
She said a legal complaint would be filed against 'all those responsible,' with the judiciary expected to investigate how the incident occurred.
Adidas's Greek subsidiary did not respond to AFP requests for comment.
The image, splashed across the front pages of several Greek media outlets yesterday, was captured during a drone show held Thursday evening at the Zappeion Hall.
The neoclassical building in central Athens is used for events and managed by a state-run legacy commission under the supervision of the Finance Ministry.
The drone display was staged by the company Essence Mediacom as part of a campaign for an Adidas product.
According to some reports, Essence Mediacom applied on April 30 for permission to hold the show and was granted approval in exchange for a fee of 'just €380 (RM1,830)'.
Essence Mediacom also did not respond to AFP's inquiries.
Mendoni said: 'The Zappeion administration should have sought approval from the Culture Ministry before granting such authorisation.'
'There has been a violation of the law on archaeological heritage,' she added.
Greek law regulating the use of archaeological sites — many dating back more than 2,500 years — is particularly strict.
The Parthenon temple atop the Acropolis, a Unesco World Heritage site built in the 5th century BC, received over 4.5 million visitors in 2024.
'The Acropolis, a global symbol of culture and democracy, cannot be treated as a backdrop for commercial use,' said the opposition Pasok party, accusing the government of negligence.
'Serious questions arise about the role and responsibility of the Culture Ministry,' the party added.
In early April, the Culture Ministry had rejected a request from Oscar-winning Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos to film at the Acropolis, arguing that the scenes did not reflect the historic site's image.
The incident has also sparked criticism on social media, with users posting: 'No to Yorgos Lanthimos. Yes to Adidas. No to art, yes to money.' — AFP

Nike Is Suing Edison Chen For Over RM500k For Breach Of Contract

It's not uncommon for brands to take legal action against celebrities, typically for damaging their reputation or breaching a contract. Recently, it was reported that footwear and apparel company Nike is suing former collaborator and Hong Kong star Edison Chen (陈冠希). On 12th August 2025 (Tuesday), reports emerged online alleging that Nike is suing Edison Chen for breach of contract. In a photo, allegedly of the court record, the company is seeking damages of US$126,615,000 (approximately RM534 million). However, recent reports have updated this figure, saying it was a clerical error and that the lawsuit is actually for a little over US$126,000 (approximately RM531,000). According to reports, the lawsuit accuses Edison and his company, Juice Los Angeles, of owing Nike US$126,615 for 'goods and services that Nike provided to Juice'. Edison was named in the lawsuit because he is the personal guarantor on the Juice account with Nike. He's also a resident of Los Angeles, where his company is based. However, there are no additional details on the case. Both Nike and Edison Chen have yet to speak on the lawsuit. However, contrary to popular belief, it appears the lawsuit has nothing to do with Edison partnering with Nike's competitor, Adidas. Edison and Nike had a long-standing relationship, dating back to 2006. Edison's streetwear brand Clot and Nike's Jordan brand have collaborated on numerous sneaker projects. The partnership ended in 2023, and a year later, Clot launched its first collaboration with Adidas Originals. Given the nearly 20-year history between Edison Chen and Nike, their 'breakup' was a surprise to many in the streetwear industry. It's not known why the partnership ended, but insiders suggest that the deal had run its course and was going to expire anyway. Meanwhile, Edison and Adidas have had three launches in 2025 alone. Earlier this month, Edison also teased the launch of a Clot x Adidas Anthony Edwards 1 sneaker. It's worth noting that the Edison Chen lawsuit comes right after Nike settled their lawsuit with custom footwear maker, The Shoe Surgeon, for unauthorised use of the brand's trademarks. Only time will tell how this lawsuit will conclude, but we wish the best for both parties. Sources: WWD, Complex, Twitter

Young Kelantan brothers hit the right note with dikir barat

Ahmad Afnan Khudri, Rifqi Rafie and youngest sibling Nawfal Imam began singing in primary school – Nawfal when he was in Standard Two. (Dikir Barat Tiga Beradik Facebook pic) KOTA BHARU : It's always heartwarming to learn of young people who ardently pursue a traditional art form in order to preserve it. Such is the case with three siblings from Kampung Chengal here, who are passionate about promoting Kelantan's cultural musical heritage and have found a following as Dikir Barat Tiga Beradik. Their 39-year-old father, Osman Mahamad, shared that his sons – Ahmad Afnan Khudri, 17, Ahmad Rifqi Rafie, 14, and Ahmad Nawfal Iman, 10 – showed a natural flair for performing in public from a young age. All three began singing and performing dikir barat, often with their own contemporary flair, while in primary school. 'Their talent became more apparent when they were introduced to dikir barat artiste Poyie Gasi, who invited them to perform on various stages and introduced them to the wider dikir community,' Osman told Bernama recently. The siblings have since received numerous invitations – sometimes up to 10 a month – to perform at weddings, birthday celebrations, and events organised by government departments. The boys' parents offer them their full support: 'This is their passion, and we want to nurture it,' father Osman says. (Dikir Barat Tiga Beradik Facebook pic) Popular numbers in their repertoire include 'Ubi Lambung', 'Kelantan Bumi Bertuah', 'Segar Angin', and 'Rindu Hatiku Rindu'. Nawfal, the youngest, is also known to captivate audiences with his unique rendition of Ziana Zain's iconic hit 'Putus Terpaksa' – performed in his own distinctive style. The boys' mother, Anis Harnita Muhamad, is grateful that her children are choosing to spend their free time meaningfully by helping to showcase Kelantan's culture. 'Alhamdulillah, they've received overwhelming support from the public,' she said. 'We hope they will continue to progress and uplift the art of dikir barat, especially among the young generation, so that this cultural heritage does not fade over time.'
