UAE, Kuwait strengthen economic ties as trade exchange hits $13.5bn
ABU DHABI: UAE Ambassador to Kuwait Dr Matar Al Neyadi affirmed on Tuesday that bilateral relations between the United Arab Emirates and Kuwait are witnessing steady growth across various sectors, with a particular focus on economic cooperation and private sector engagement. Speaking virtually at a symposium titled 'The Nature of Economic Relations between the UAE and Kuwait', held at the Emirates Center for Strategic Studies and Research (ECSSR) in Abu Dhabi, Dr Al Neyadi highlighted the strong momentum in economic collaboration within the broader framework of Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) integration.
Al Neyadi revealed that the volume of trade exchange between the two countries reached AED 49.7 billion ($13.53 billion) by the end of 2024, marking an 8.8 percent increase compared to 2023. He added that trade for the first quarter of 2025 stood at AED 10.2 billion ($2.78 billion), underscoring the resilience of economic ties. He noted that both nations enjoy a favorable investment climate that offers considerable opportunities for the private sector, semi-government entities, and small and medium-sized enterprises to expand cooperation and establish strategic partnerships.

The ambassador also praised the outcomes of the fourth and fifth sessions of the UAE-Kuwait Joint Higher Committee meetings, which identified priority sectors for collaboration. These include food security, healthcare, communications, information technology, artificial intelligence, defence industries, infrastructure, energy, and air and maritime transport. For his part, Dr Sultan Al Nuaimi, Director General of ECSSR, said the symposium comes at a pivotal time as the region seeks to deepen Gulf integration. He emphasized the need for continued dialogue and alignment of shared visions to build resilient, competitive, and sustainable economies amid evolving global economic challenges.
Al Nuaimi noted the historical depth of UAE-Kuwait relations, describing them as a model of Gulf cooperation. He pointed out that bilateral trade has surged by approximately 75 percent over the past decade, with the UAE currently ranking as the third-largest investor in Kuwait. He further highlighted the alignment between the two nations' economic visions, especially their early commitment to diversifying income sources and fostering innovation across strategic sectors. This shared outlook, he said, paves the way for advanced partnerships in renewable energy, digital innovation, and knowledge-based industries.
'These synergies open wide horizons for joint initiatives and investment in sustainable development projects,' Al Nuaimi said. Relations between Kuwait and the UAE continue to be defined by mutual respect and strategic collaboration, particularly in non-oil sectors, which have shown consistent growth in recent years. With non-oil trade already surpassing $13.5 billion in 2024, expectations remain high for even stronger economic engagement in the months ahead. — KUNA

Single GCC Tourist Visa by the End of This Year
KUWAIT CITY, Jun 3: The longstanding Iraq-Kuwait border dispute returned to the spotlight during a meeting of Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) foreign ministers, as the Council reiterated calls for Iraq to resolve key pending issues and respect international agreements. GCC Secretary-General Jassim Al-Budaiwi expressed optimism that a unified Gulf visa system could be finalized before the end of the year. However, much of the diplomatic focus centered on Iraq, with Kuwait's Foreign Minister and current chairman of the GCC Ministerial Council, Abdullah Al-Yahya, calling for tangible progress from Baghdad on the unresolved files of prisoners, missing persons, and seized Kuwaiti property. Speaking to the press following the ministerial session, Al-Yahya underscored the need for continued UN Security Council oversight, including the appointment of a senior coordinator to carry forward efforts following the expiration of the mandate of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI). Kuwaiti-Syrian Relations Also in Focus In a separate diplomatic development, Foreign Minister Al-Yahya confirmed that recent talks between Syrian President Ahmad Al-Shara and His Highness the Amir Sheikh Meshaal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah covered a wide range of bilateral and regional issues. The Amir reaffirmed Kuwait's support for Syria's sovereignty and territorial unity, Al-Yahya noted, adding that President Al-Shara met with members of the Syrian expatriate community and private sector representatives during his visit. Looking ahead, the foreign minister said additional meetings are expected between Syrian and Kuwaiti counterparts, both at the governmental and civil society levels. KUWAIT CITY, June 2: The Kuwaiti Hajj Mission has warned against the use of any irregular permits or the employment of individuals outside the authorized frameworks during the Hajj season, whether in service or administrative roles. In a press statement, the mission said 'we call on all Hajj caravans and citizens to strictly comply with all the regulations and instructions issued by the competent authorities in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to avoid legal accountability and penalties that may include the cancellation of permits and the ban on entry to the holy sites.' The mission pointed out that cooperation with the authorities in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is essential to the success of the Hajj season, and that adherence to regulations is a national and religious responsibility. It disclosed that the competent authorities in the Kingdom have granted Hajj caravans a maximum of four percent of the total number of authorized pilgrims, to be used to allocate support service personnel, provided that they are issued official Hajj permits. These personnel must be registered with the caravans and meet the approved requirements. It added that the Kingdom also allocated a maximum of 10 percent of the number of pilgrims for administrative support workers. They are permitted to work during the Hajj season following the regulations and conditions in force with the Saudi authorities, but they are not permitted to perform the Hajj rituals. It also stated that the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah in the Kingdom issued a circular prohibiting citizens of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries from entering this category of administrative workers. This follows the use of these permits to fraudulently perform Hajj in irregular ways, which is a clear violation punishable by law. It explained that this comes within the framework of ongoing coordination with the relevant authorities in the Kingdom to ensure that Hajj caravans and Kuwaiti citizens adhere to the regulations and instructions governing the Hajj ritual. Meanwhile, Minister of Endowments and Islamic Affairs Dr. Mohammad Al-Wasmi confirmed that the Ministry of Islamic Affairs is directly informed about the progress of the Kuwaiti Hajj Mission's work and its preparations to receive Kuwaiti pilgrims. Al-Wasmi revealed, 'The activities, efforts, and work undertaken by the mission members are clear evidence of their dedication to completing the tasks assigned to them with precision and mastery.' He expressed his happiness 'that the mission is proceeding according to its plan and that success will be its ally.' He pointed out the vast experience of the mission members, which they have acquired over the past several years, alongside the new members who are dedicated to their work. He affirmed the mission's commitment to provide them with the necessary experience to enable the mission to perform its work with distinction. He also underscored the need for the committees to continue their efforts, remain active, and work as a team to achieve success. He added that this is not difficult to achieve, but success requires a great deal of effort, perseverance and patience; especially since success is not uncommon for the mission. He confirmed the ongoing communication with the committees to follow up the work of the mission and ease procedures for the Kuwaiti pilgrims.
