With Asia Cup uncertain, PCBs revenue could take massive hit

Karachi, Jul 21 (PTI) With the future of this year's Asia Cup T20 tournament mired in uncertainty, the Pakistan Cricket Board is bracing for a severe hit to its revenue.
The Pakistan Cricket Board is expecting to earn an estimated 8.8 billion rupees this year from its share of the revenue from the International Cricket Council (ICC) and the Asian Cricket Council (ACC).
According to details coming from a reliable Board source, the PCB has outlined an amount of USD 25.9 million (approximately 7.7 billion rupees) during this fiscal year as its share from the ICC.
The Board is hoping to earn another 1.16 billion rupees from the Asia Cup and 7.77 million rupees through other international cricket events.
'The revenues from these two major sources (ICC and Asia Cup) is very important for the financial health of Pakistan cricket," one well-informed insider said.
He said the uncertainty over the schedule and venue for the Asia Cup has increased as PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi did not travel to Singapore for the ICC meetings last weekend.
Naqvi, who is also the federal interior minister, instead took part in the AGM virtually.
According to the insider, PCB CEO Sumair Ahmed, who had gone for the ICC meeting, 'didn't get positive responses" from either the BCCI or the boards of Sri Lanka, and Afghanistan over attending the ACC meeting called on July 24 in Dhaka to finalise the Asia Cup arrangements.
'The PCB met with plenty of resistance to the ACC scheduling the meeting in Dhaka. India, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Oman and few other associate member boards were adamant about not travelling to Dhaka," one insider added.
He said the discussions on the sidelines of the ICC meeting don't augur well for the Asia Cup being held on schedule in September as the BCCI is not willing to send its representative to Dhaka.
The ACC is currently headed by Naqvi.
Originally India was scheduled to host the Asia Cup in September but due to the existing stand-off with Pakistan after the Pahalgam terror attack, the chances of the regional event being moved to UAE are high.
Sumair was also sent to Dubai earlier this year to attend the Champions Trophy final ceremony but due to some 'miscommunication", he was not a part of the officials who were on stage for the presentations.
Interestingly in the expected revenue given in the budget for the fiscal year, the PCB has included 2.5 billion rupees as the estimated revenue from the next edition of the Pakistan Super League.
The PCB's total budget for the fiscal year is around 18.8 billion rupees. PTI Cor PM PM PM

Trump announces Apple investing another USD 100 billion in US manufacturing
Washington, Aug 6 (AP) Apple CEO Tim Cook joined President Donald Trump at the White House on Wednesday to announce a commitment by the tech company to increase its investment in US manufacturing by an additional USD 100 billion over the next four years. 'This is a significant step toward the ultimate goal of ensuring that iPhones sold in the United States of America also are made in America," Trump said at the press conference. 'Today's announcement is one of the largest commitments in what has become among the greatest investment booms in our nation's history." As part of the Apple announcement, the investments will be about bringing more of its supply chain and advanced manufacturing to the United States as part of an initiative called the American Manufacturing Programme, but it is not a full commitment to build its popular iPhone device domestically. 'This includes new and expanded work with 10 companies across America. They produce components — semiconductor chips included — that are used in Apple products sold all over the world, and we're grateful to the President for his support," Cook said in a statement announcing the investment. The new manufacturing partners include Corning, Coherent, Applied Materials, Texas Instruments and Broadcom among others. Apple had previously said it intended to invest USD 500 billion domestically, a figure it will now increase to USD 600 billion. Trump in recent months has criticised the tech company and Cook for efforts to shift iPhone production to India to avoid the tariffs his Republican administration had planned for China. While in Qatar earlier this year, Trump said there was 'a little problem" with the Cupertino, California, company and recalled a conversation with Cook in which he said he told the CEO, 'I do not want you building in India." India has incurred Trump's wrath, as the president signed an order on Wednesday to put an additional 25 per cent tariff on the world's most populous country for its use of Russian oil. The new import taxes to be imposed in 21 days could put the combined tariffs on Indian goods at 50 per cent. Apple's new pledge comes just a few weeks after it forged a USD 500 million deal with MP Materials, which runs the only rare earths producer in the country. That agreement will enable MP Materials to expand a factory in Texas to use recycled materials to produce magnets that make iPhones vibrate. Speaking on a recent investors call, Cook emphasised that 'there is a load of different things done in the United States". As examples, he cited some of the iPhone components made in the US such as the device's glass display and module for identifying people's faces and then indicated the company was gearing to expand its productions of other components in its home country. 'We are doing more in this country, and that is on top of having roughly 19 billion chips coming out of the US now, and we will do more," Cook told analysts last week, without elaborating. News of Apple's latest investment in the US caused the company's stock price to surge by 5 per cent in Wednesday's midday trading. That gain reflects investors' relief that Cook 'is extending an olive branch" to the Trump administration, said Nancy Tengler, CEO of money manager Laffer Tengler Investments, which owns Apple stock. Despite Wednesday's upturn, Apple's shares are still down by 15 per cent this year, a reversal of fortune that has also been driven by the company's botched start in the pivotal field of artificial intelligence. HC rejects plea to shift Hadapsar waste facility, directs strict compliance by PMC, PCB
The Bombay High Court has dismissed a petition seeking the relocation of the waste processing facility operating at the Hadapsar industrial estate in Pune. The order came in response to two petitions challenging the continued use of the Hadapsar site by PMC and PCB. (REPRESENTATIVE PHOTO) In its order dated August 5, the court directed the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and the Pune Cantonment Board (PCB) to ensure that no mixed solid waste is dumped on any part of the 28-acre site, and that all operations strictly comply with environmental regulations. The HC bench Chief Justice Alok Aradhe and Judge Sandeep V Marne stated that while the existing facility can continue operations, PMC and PCB must ensure strict adherence to the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016, and the conditions laid down in the environmental authorisation. 'PCB and PMC shall ensure that the municipal solid waste transported to the site is processed and disposed of either by composting of wet waste, recycling and reuse of dry waste, and transportation of non-biodegradable and unusable waste to a sanitary landfill. PCB and PMC shall take all necessary measures to suppress and control foul odour, toxic gases, dust, etc., emanating from the waste processing facility and adopt modern techniques to ensure the health of nearby residents is not adversely affected,' the order stated. The court also directed the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) to enforce strict compliance. If PMC, PCB, or their contractors fail to meet the conditions, the MPCB must initiate appropriate legal action. Further, the court clarified that PMC and PCB may approach the state government for identification and allocation of additional land for setting up or expanding waste management infrastructure. However, it is for the state government to decide in accordance with the law. The order came in response to two petitions challenging the continued use of the Hadapsar site by PMC and PCB. The petitioners alleged that mixed solid waste was being dumped at the site, leading to toxic emissions, foul odour, and air pollution affecting the health of residents living nearby. The first petition—a Public Interest Litigation (PIL)—was filed by the Hadapsar Industries Association and St Patrick's Town Co-operative Society Ltd. The petitioners sought a complete discontinuation of waste processing at the site and its relocation outside city limits, citing violations of the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016, and a government resolution dated September 11, 2018. They also claimed the land, bearing Survey No. 120-298 and measuring about 28 acres, was not suitable for garbage processing. The PIL noted that while PCB had used the land for over 100 years, it was doing so merely as a 'lessee holding over' and did not own the property. The petitioners referred to a suit filed by 61 claimants asserting ownership and seeking PCB's eviction. Although the suit was dismissed in 2009, an appeal is pending. The second petition, a writ petition, was filed by five senior citizens from the Sopan Baug area, who alleged exposure to foul-smelling and toxic air for nearly six hours daily due to operations at the site. They, too, demanded that the waste facility be moved outside city limits. Respondents included the PCB, PMC, MPCB, the Pune District Collector, and the State of Maharashtra.

Apple's 100 Billion US Investment As part of what it calls the American Manufacturing Program, or AMP, Apple promised to bring more of its supply chain and advanced production to the US. The company's AMP partners include glassmaker Corning Inc., Applied Materials Inc., Texas Instruments Inc. and others, the company said. Corning will dedicate an entire factory in Kentucky to Apple glass production, increasing that company's workforce in the state by 50%, the iPhone maker said. Corning was already a supplier to Apple, making glass for the very first iPhone at the same factory. 'President Trump's America First economic agenda has secured trillions of dollars in investments that support American jobs and bolster American businesses,' White House spokesperson Taylor Rogers said in a statement. 'Today's announcement with Apple is another win for our manufacturing industry that will simultaneously help reshore the production of critical components to protect America's economic and national security.'
