Kern Public Health names June ‘Vector-borne Disease Month'
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — As we head into the summer season, the heat isn't the only issue that Kern County has to deal with. On Wednesday morning, Kern County Public Health launched June as 'Vector-Borne Disease Month,' part of their year-long disease fighters initiative. The health department joined Kern Mosquito and Vector Control District for an open house to discuss awareness and prevention. Mosquitoes can transmit diseases like 'West Nile virus' and 'St. Louis Encephalitis'. Woman arrested after multi-agency pursuit ends with car in orchard Health officials want to remind the public that preventing mosquitoes from breeding and avoiding mosquito bites are the best ways to avoid getting these diseases. 'They can start right at their homes, they can do weekly walkarounds around their yards…make sure there's no standing water,' said Jay Thao, District Manager with Delano Mosquito Abatement District. 'Mosquitos breed in standing water. So any man-made container that can hold water for a week can produce mosquitos. People can just check their yards and tip and toss any standing water.' Although most residents who contract these diseases will show no serious symptoms, a small portion of people can experience serious health complications. 4-year-old Bakersfield girl with rare medical condition granted humanitarian parole following letter from US Department of Homeland Security
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — A 4-year-old girl with a rare condition and living in Bakersfield has been granted humanitarian parole allowing her to stay in the U.S., according to a letter from the Department of Homeland Security. The 4-year-old girl made national news in recent weeks following her mother's request for their humanitarian parole to be extended due to the girl, referred to as 'Sofia,' needing life-saving treatment. Last week, a group of Democratic legislators including California Senators Adam Schiff and Alex Padilla urged the Department of Homeland Security to reverse a decision that stripped 'Sofia's' mother's legal status in the U.S. 'Sofia' was born with short bowel syndrome that requires her to be connected to a feeding tube more than half of the day. Her mother, Deysi Vargas, requested that their humanitarian parole be extended so that her daughter could continue receiving the treatment without the fear of deportation. 'Still being considered': DHS says reports of Bakersfield girl being deported are false Without the treatment, Sofia would die in a matter of days. On Tuesday, the humanitarian parole was granted to Sofia and her mother for one year allowing 'Sofia' to continue the medical treatment. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
