EastEnders star Lorraine Stanley tried weight loss jabs to lose 6.5st but one thing changed her mind
Lorraine, who has nine-year-old daughter Nancy with her fiancé Mark Perez, shares her excitement about tying the knot this month after a two-year engagement, the secrets behind her incredible weight loss and why she's happy, for now, to be her daughter's personal taxi service…
Hi, Lorraine! We hear you're getting married later this month…
I am indeed. I'm getting married to my partner in a ceremony local to where we live in Hertfordshire. It's going to be low-key. From my EastEnders gang, Danny Walters is coming. I wanted them all to come, but we're just having a small, intimate wedding at a church, then a pub with a tepee and barbecue.
Will Nancy have a special part to play?
She's the one wearing the big white wedding dress – well, the flower girl dress. Mine's modest, really. But I'm so excited. Mark and I have been together for 12 years.
So why tie the knot now?
We're just in a really good place. You know, every couple goes through their ups and downs, but it feels right, we're happy. Nancy wanted us to get married, I wanted his surname – I know some women don't want that but I do. I want to be Mrs Perez. I've been abroad a few times with Nancy and was asked if she's my daughter as we have different surnames on our passports. But it's not just practicalities, it's love.
Why do you and Mark work so well together?
We've got an understanding, we respect each other. We give each other space, we've got our own lives. He's the best father. He's in marketing, so nothing to do with my world, though I think he could be an actor – he can be quite dramatic at times!
You're 50 next year. How do you feel?
I'm feeling great. I looked 20 years older when I was bigger. I certainly felt it anyway. I won't have a big showbiz bash. We might go to Disney World Florida. We'll see.
You look incredible. Tell us about the transformation…
I've lost 6½st. I weigh 8st now. If you look at my little wrists and ankles, this is the weight I should have been. I should be a thin person. And I always was, until I hit my late twenties.
How did you lose the weight?
I'm not going to lie, nor am I promoting it, but I had weight-loss surgery two years ago. I had a gastric sleeve. I went to Harley Street. I didn't go to a clinic in Turkey or anything. In saying that, I've had friends who've gone to Turkey and had great experiences, but I didn't trust that process. So, yeah, I went to a London clinic, paid an awful lot of money and had it done. It's hands-down the best thing I've ever done – both for me and for my family.
I can play with my daughter. I used to be so big I couldn't chase her up the road. I was missing out on so much – even playing a bit of football with her outside. It's changed everything.
It's pretty drastic surgery. What was the big lightbulb moment?
I was at home watching an episode of EastEnders I was in and I could barely look at myself. The person on screen was unrecognisable to me. I know TV puts a stone on you, but… so yes, there was an element of vanity, but it was also me wanting to change things for my daughter and our future.
Did you try any weight-loss jabs before opting for surgery?
Yeah, I'd tried Wegovy. I have friends on different weight-loss jabs and they work for them. I'm not against them, but for whatever reason I feel like I got immune to them. It got to the point where I was injecting myself and eating at the same time. I was thinking, 'What the hell are you doing?' So I decided that was it, time to get this surgery booked.
Do you feel like a new woman?
Where do I start? I'm healthier, I'm fitter and it's changed my mindset for the better. I still enjoy a square or two of chocolate, but everything's in small portions. I can eat what I want, just smaller amounts of it.
It has been hard, though. You've got to work at your portions. You don't want to overeat as you can stretch the gastric band. And you don't want to do that as you've paid good money for it. But for me – and this is totally personal – it's the best thing I could have done.
Would you go back on EastEnders?
Maybe – they didn't kill me off. But right now, I wouldn't. I'm enjoying Nancy. On EastEnders, I missed a lot of milestones. Now I'm like her personal taxi driver for skateboarding, piano lessons – and I love it. I've gone for a few auditions. I haven't got anything yet, but I will. And if I don't, I don't mind that either. I'm so happy being a mum.
Would you go on any of the big reality TV shows?
If the money was amazing, maybe. But it's not my thing. I love acting, theatre especially, so I want to try and keep on that path. I'd love a role at the National Theatre. That's where I started my career, so it would be a nice full-circle moment.

The corporation discloses the names and earnings of its employees who earn above a certain threshold (£178,000) each year. This is because many of the BBC's stars are not directly employed by the broadcaster but are contracted through various production companies, and as a result these individuals do not appear on the salary list. One such company is Banijay, which produces MasterChef and previously employed and paid presenters Gregg Wallace and John Torode before their dismissals Both co-hosts, have been with Banijay for years as the successful presenters of the BBC cooking show. Their salaries were never disclosed, but Gregg was reportedly earning £400,000 according to The Sun last year. However, this sum might encompass other MasterChef-related work, such as endorsements or additional appearances. It's worth mentioning that he also generates income from other endeavours, like his event appearances, but the precise figures aren't publicly disclosed. Meanwhile, John is believed to be worth an eye-watering £8 million, courtesy of his television work, culinary career and restaurant ventures. Throughout his career, he has accumulated substantial wealth, with his net worth estimated at approximately £8 million, primarily stemming from his flourishing career as a chef and television personality. This development follows numerous misconduct allegations as over 50 individuals lodged complaints about his behaviour, all of which Gregg has refuted. In November 2024, 13 individuals initially accused him of making unsuitable sexual comments, but BBC News have reported receiving 50 additional complaints from individuals who claim they encountered him across various shows and environments. The majority allege he made unsuitable sexual comments, while 11 women accused him of inappropriate sexual behaviour, such as groping and touching, allegations that Wallace categorically denies.

BBC's long-running crime drama gets huge update and 'fans are NOT going to be disappointed'
The BBC's long-running uber-cosy crime drama Father Brown has received some major updates about its new season. The period detective show, which has been airing on BBC One in the afternoons since 2013, has just finished filming in the Cotswolds for its upcoming 13th run. To mark the occasion, the BBC has announced a whole raft of familiar faces who'll be popping up in the season as guest characters. Before we get to that, let's have a look at the returning cast members. Mark Williams, Tom Chambers, Claudie Blakley, Ruby-May Martinwood, John Burton, Nancy Carroll, John Light, Lex Shrapnel, Roger May and Kieran Hodgson are all coming back for more 1950s murder investigations. Sorcha Cusack will also be back, but only for the first episode. They'll be joined by: Maureen Lipman, Julia Sawalha, Phil Daniels, Debra Stephenson, Davood Ghadami, Kevin Harvey, George Rainsford and Timothy Watson. There's obviously a lot of recognisable names for soap fans there, as Maureen and Debra are from Coronation Street, Phil and Davood worked on EastEnders, and George is best known for Casualty. Meanwhile, Kevin appeared on a few episodes of Hollyoaks back in 2009, while Timothy is a long-standing cast member on a soap of a different kind with The Archers. Plot-wise, it's been teased that Father Brown is drawn into a cat-and-mouse with Father Lazarus in prison, while Bishop-Elect Canon Fox plans his revenge. Mr and Mrs Sullivan embark on married life, Brenda embarks on a self-empowerment journey, and everyone embarks on a trip to the seaside. "Father Brown has many loyal fans and they are NOT going to be disappointed with the latest episodes," said Commissioning Editor for BBC Daytime Helen Munson. "The team at BBC Studios have delivered another fabulous series, and there are some very exciting guest appearances too!" Executive Producer Neil Irvine added: "I'm delighted that Mark Williams is back as Father Brown for a phenomenal thirteenth series, which promises to be the most exciting to date. "Mrs McCarthy's return, a rock'n'roll invasion and a trip to the seaside are just a few of the treats in store for our loyal audience. And when Canon Fox becomes Bishop-Elect, Father Brown finds his position dangling perilously on a thread. Can he secure his position in Kembleford once and for all?" Paul Merton reveals big challenge of doing Have I Got News for You
Paul Merton is struggling to find "new things to say" on Have I Got News for You as the same topics are making top news stories. The 68-year-old comedian and the 65-year-old journalist Ian Hislop have been panellists on the BBC One comedy quiz show - which sees them and their celebrity teammate answer questions based on, and make light of, the week's top news stories - since 1990. But as they are repeatedly making jokes about subjects - including US President Donald Trump, 79 - that are constantly in the news cycle, Paul finds it tricky to produce new material. He told the new issue of Loaded magazine: "There are certain news stories that won't go away. COVID was one, Brexit was another, and of course, Donald Trump. "It's difficult to find new things to say, but if those are the major stories, you have to cover them." Paul says that the producers of the show do not mention the ongoing war between Ukraine and Russia every week because people want to hear good news stories. He explained: "We sometimes cover Ukraine, but you don't want a war story every week, as I think the reason people tune in is to escape from the bad news stories. "We have to make sure we're not concentrating too much on the gloomy stuff." Paul said it was "special" that his teenage idols - the late comedians Peter Cook and Spike Milligan - appeared on Have I Got News for You in 1992 and 1995 respectively. He added: "I think when you meet someone whom you deeply admired when you were a teenager, it's something special when you meet them as an adult. "Spike Milligan and Peter Cook, for example. They would stand out as extraordinary people that you couldn't quite believe you were sharing a screen with." Paul adored the comedienne Victoria Wood - who died of oesophageal cancer at the age of 62 in 2016 - and he thinks she turned down an offer to do Have I Got News for You because she was not keen on the programme. He explained: "I was a huge fan of Victoria Wood, and it would have been lovely to have her on. "I think she was asked, but maybe it wasn't her thing? "I think most people we wanted to get on the show have been on it."
