THE KwaZulu-Natal economy received a boost of over R600 million, all spinning off Sunday's running of the 98th edition of the Comrades Marathon, which was said to have attracted around 20 000 runners.
Much of that spend would have landed in Durban coffers as this year's Comrades 'down run' finished at city's Moses Mabhida Stadium.

It has been good recent goings for Durban in terms of earning from big events.
Media reports have indicated that the Africa Travel Indaba netted the city around R570 million, and the Nedbank Cup final between Soweto giants Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs, also in May, scored revenue of nearly R100 million for Durban.
Last week's Isuzu Ironman 70.3 Durban event and the shoals of sardines that beached on the city's shores, attractions in their own right, would have also produced some nice nibbles for the local economy.
The Hollywoodbets Durban July race day is a big drawcard event for the city.

Currently, Gold Circle's Champions Season, which attracts some of the country's top thoroughbred horses to racing events, is in full gallop.
The Champion Seasons' main offering, the Hollywoodbets Durban July, a horserace that always produces a massive injection of earnings for local hospitality and tourism operators, as well as other related industries, is scheduled for July 5.
Rosemary Anderson, chairperson of the Federated Hospitality Association of South Africa, said the current financial boom for Durban underlined what a powerhouse sports tourism has become globally.
'UN Tourism reports it accounts for about 10 % of all tourism spending, while market analysis shows the sector was valued at over USD 680 billion in 2023 and is on track to double by 2030.
'This demonstrates just how high‑impact sports events can be – not only do they inject immediate revenue, but they also elevate a destination's global profile, create jobs, and lay the groundwork for repeat visitation,'
Anderson also appreciated the impact the Comrades had on local businesses.
'Durban and KwaZulu‑Natal have enjoyed a good tourism and hospitality boost, and organisers estimate the event injected over R600 million into the local economy, which supported at least 1 800 jobs across hospitality, transport, and event services .
'This isn't just about the race day; fully booked hotels in Durban, Pietermaritzburg and Umhlanga, extended stays by supporters and families, pre‑ and post‑race tourism, and packed restaurants and attractions have created a vibrant ripple effect.'
As the Hollywoodbets Durban July was on the horizon, Anderson said it was on track to provide another golden opportunity for a grand pay day– and the city should seize it.
'Events like the July have the potential to further amplify tourism, luring domestic and international visitors, filling accommodation, energising the restaurant and retail sectors, and boosting brand Durban on the world stage.
'The more we host quality sporting events, the more we unlock value for our tourism and hospitality industry – and in South Africa, that's a strategy worth pursuing aggressively.
'As FEDHASA - we hope that the Dept of Sports, Arts and Culture – will work towards dramatically increasing the number of international sporting events held in SA, " Anderson appealed.
The eThekwini Municipality's mayor, Cyril Xaba, said hosting the Comrades continues to position Durban as a most preferred sporting destination.
'eThekwini is proud to host this global event, and roll-out the red carpet for runners and spectators. We always do our best in ensuring that our visitors' stay is an unforgettable one, to affirm Durban as a destination of choice for major events.
''Hosting such major international events brings us much joy, as it is a strong indication that we are among other international cities known for successfully delivering memorable sporting events. We will continue to leverage on such events as they boost the local economy and drive tourism,' said Xaba.

Lord's hums to 'Ole, Ole, Ole' as World Test Championship Final kicks off in grand style

Lord's was overflowing with Proteas fans on Day 1 of the World Test Championship Final in London. Picture: Zaahier Adams/Independent Media Image: Picture: Zaahier Adams/Independent Media There is a hush around the famous old ground. Everyone is waiting in eager anticipation. The coin goes up in the air. Heads is the call. It feels like an eternity before it hits the Lord's turf. Match referee Javagal Srinath picks it up and walks over to Temba Bavuma. The Proteas captain has called correctly. A big cheer goes out from particularly the Mount Stand, which has been transformed into Castle Corner here at St John's Wood. Bavuma alludes to it when the skipper says "we can hear the South African accents in the stands" after opting to unleash his quicks Kagiso Rabada and Marco Jansen first. Video Player is loading. Next Stay Close ✕ The ICC have hauled out the greats from both teams' legendary eras of the past. Hashim Amla and Matthew Hayden, sporting a cowboy hat of such magnitude it would put Chuck 'Walker Texas Ranger' Norris' to shame, were called upon to walk out the ICC golden mace. Even Boeta Dippenaar was spotted, dressed in his full 2005 '438' ODI kit, while Brett Schultz is still a cult hero after all these years. It's a real pity Steve Waugh was not in attendance though. Waugh has traditionally riled up South Africans with his sharp tongue, particularly when he sledged Herschelle Gibbs with the infamous line 'You have just dropped the World Cup' up the M1 here back in 1999. But his most recent barb that South Africans 'don't care about Test cricket' really hit a nerve for everyone from Cape Town to Camden that has any links to Mzansi has found their way down the Jubilee Line to witness 'The Ultimate Test' in the flesh. The table was now set for an absorbing day's cricket. 'Big-time players make big-time plays in big-time spots. That's who I want to be.' That was an oft saying from former NFL superstar Aaron Donald. Kagiso Rabada (L) celebrates taking the wicket of Australia's Cameron Green during Day 1 of the ICC World Test Championship at Lord's Picture: Glyn Kirk/AFP Image: Glyn Kirk/AFP He may as well have been referring to Kagiso Rabada. The Proteas' spearhead has had to get a new set of headphones so loud has the noise been around him heading into this WTC Final. But from the moment 'KG' charged in from the Nursery End with the new ball, the only noise now being heard was the chants from the 'Saffas' every time he took a wicket. They had five glorious opportunities to stretch their vocal cords with Rabada carving his name onto the Lord's honours board for a second time with a five-star performance. The 'gees' in the stands was now at an all-time high with the London mid-afternoon sun peaking its head out over the old Father Time weathercrane. For a few moments Lord's may even have been The Wanderers with 'Ole, Ole, Ole' reverberating around the hallowed old ground. Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates in race for U20 AFCON winner!

Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates are reportedly in a race to sign U2 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) winner Neo Rapoo. Rapoo is currently on the books of SuperSport United which has been his home since his development days. The left-back has grown in leaps and bounds since making his PSL debut for Matsatsantsa three seasons ago. At the time, Rapoo was just 16 years old, and he has become one of the top talents in the South African football. Now, iDiski Times reports that Rapoo is wanted by both Chiefs and Pirates ahead of next season, and that the player is keen. From afar, Pirates appear to have a better chance of snatching the 19-year-old right under the nose of Amakhosi. And that's because Rapoo may fancy his chances of a regular game time at Pirates than at Chiefs following the departure of Paseka Mako and Innocent Maela's retirement. At Chiefs, competition for places could be stiff and unfavorable for Rapoo, especially because Mako is heavily linked with them. There is also Bradley Cross and Happy Mashiane in that left-back position although things could change in the near future. SA under 20 left back Neo Rapoo wanted by both Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates. Image via @SoccerBeat on X 'Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs are both keen to sign SuperSport United left-back Neo Rapoo ahead of the new season,' reads part of the report. 'Sources confirmed Rapoo is open to the idea of a move in the domestic league as he looks towards the next step of his career, despite the long-term desire of plying his trade in Europe.'
