N Chandrababu Naidu
of "undermining democracy" in the Pulivendula and Vontimitta local body bypolls, alleging he resorted to "conspiracies, attacks, atrocities, lies, cheating and backstabbing" to seize power.

The YSRCP chief alleged that since the issuance of the by-election notification, "police atrocities began," with hundreds of party leaders and workers-many without prior cases-being bound over to "intimidate" them.
Jagan recalled that on August 5, TDP supporters allegedly attacked YSRCP leaders at a wedding in Pulivendula, Kadapa district, injuring Amaresh Reddy and Saidapuram Suresh Reddy, and "threatening" others.
Live Events
On August 6, TDP leaders allegedly attempted to murder YSRCP MLC Ramesh Yadav and leader V Ramalinga Reddy by ramming their car and pouring petrol, while police "remained passive," he claimed.
Instead of arresting the attackers, police allegedly filed a false SC/ST case the same day against Velpula Ramu and about 50 others, he added.
Jagan further alleged that polling booths were shifted on August 8, forcing around 4,000 YSRCP voters to travel long distances, creating "scope for booth capturing and voter suppression."
He also accused Naidu of planning to "suppress voter turnout and block media coverage." Despite these allegations, Jagan expressed confidence that "truth and justice will ultimately prevail."
There was no immediate response from the ruling
Telugu Desam Party
(TDP).
The Pulivendula Zilla Parishad Territorial Constituency (ZPTC) bypoll, along with Mandal Parishad Territorial Constituencies (MPTCs) in several districts, is scheduled for August 12.
Pulivendula, the hometown of the late former Chief Minister YS Rajasekhar Reddy and his son Jagan Mohan Reddy, is a stronghold of the YSRCP.
MPTC elections will be held in Ramakuppam (Chittoor district), Karempudi (Palnadu district), Vidavaluru (Sri Potti Sriramulu Nellore district), and ZPTC polls will take place in Pulivendula and Vontimitta (YSR Kadapa district).

Delhi HC asks Yasin Malik to respond to NIA's plea for death penalty

The Delhi High Court on Monday sought separatist leader Yasin Malik 's response on a plea filed by the National Investigation Agency seeking death penalty for him in a terror funding case . A bench of Justices Vivek Chaudhary and Shalinder Kaur granted four weeks to Malik to file his response to the NIA's petition. Malik, who previously sought to argue in-person against NIA's plea seeking the enhancement, was supposed to appear virtually from jail but wasn't produced. The Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front chief (JKLF) is lodged in Tihar jail where he is serving a life term in the case. Live Events The high court noted that neither Malik was produced virtually in the proceedings from jail nor he filed his reply to NIA's plea in pursuance to the court's August 9, 2024 order. On August 9, Malik was directed to be produced virtually and not physically due to security threats. On Monday, the bench directed the jail authorities to produce him virtually on November 10. Malik last year turned down the court's suggestion to appoint a lawyer on his behalf and said he wished to argue the case in-person. On May 29, 2023, the high court issued notice to Malik on the NIA's plea seeking death penalty. Subsequently, jail authorities filed an application seeking permission for his virtual appearance on grounds that he was a "very high-risk prisoner" and it was imperative to not physically produce him in court to maintain public order and safety. The request was allowed by the high court. On May 24, 2022, a trial court sentenced Malik to life imprisonment after holding him guilty for offences under the stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) and IPC. Malik had pleaded guilty to the charges, including those under the UAPA, and was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment. Appealing against the sentence, the NIA emphasised that a terrorist cannot be sentenced life term only because he has pleaded guilty and chosen not to go through trial. While seeking enhancement of the sentence to death penalty, the NIA said if such dreaded terrorists are not given capital punishment on account of pleading guilty, there would be complete erosion of the sentencing policy and terrorists would have a way out to avoid capital punishment. The trial court, which rejected the NIA's plea for death penalty, had said the crimes committed by Malik struck at the "heart of the idea of India" and were intended to forcefully secede Jammu and Kashmir from the Union of India. Rahul Gandhi demands clean, pure voter list

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Monday said the Opposition is protesting for the right to vote for every Indian, and demanded a "clean and pure" voter list. He said the Election Commission is silent as the truth is before the entire nation, after his charge that over one lakh votes in an assembly constituency in Karnataka were found to be fake in a research conducted by his party. Suneetha Narreddy writes open letter seeking reopening of probe into her father's murder

Suneetha Narreddy, daughter of slain former MP Y.S. Vivekananda Reddy, wrote an open letter to all Members of Parliament and MLCs and MLAs in Andhra Pradesh seeking their support for reopening the murder case and its speedy completion, while noting that her father's soul is still crying for justice more than six years after he was killed. She said in the letter, written on August 10 on the occasion of Rakshabandhan, that Vivekananda Reddy was brutally murdered at his residence in Pulivendula in Kadapa district in March 2019 and the perpetrators of the crime were caught but the conspirators remained untouched. On March 15, 2019, Sakshi TV, which is managed by Y.S. Bharati Reddy, wife of Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, broadcast a news that Mr. Vivekananda Reddy died of a heart attack and several YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) leaders repeated that claim on the same channel. Ms. Suneetha Narreddy said she found her father's body with wounds that were covered with bandages. The Sakshi newspaper carried a full-page story the next day alleging that Telugu Desam Party (TDP) leaders were responsible for the murder. Mr. Jagan Mohan Reddy even filed a writ petition in the High Court seeking a CBI probe. During the 2019 State Assembly elections, Vivekananda Reddy's murder became a political weapon against the TDP. The YSRCP won and Mr. Jagan Mohan Reddy became the Chief Minister. He personally assured Ms. Suneetha Narreddy that the killers would be caught, saying that failure (to apprehend the culprits) would be an insult to him. The SIT formed by the YSRCP government was reconstituted just as it neared a breakthrough, after which Mr. Jagan Mohan Reddy told Ms. Suneetha Narreddy that a CBI probe was 'not an option' as it might cause MP Y.S. Avinash Reddy to defect to another party. She approached the A.P. High Court and it transferred the case to the CBI on March 11, 2020 but Mr. Jagan Mohan Reddy withdrew his own petition for a CBI probe. Noting the influence of the accused and State interference, the Supreme Court transferred the trial to Telangana on November 29, 2022, while observing that there was a larger conspiracy that required further CBI investigation. Yet, this has not happened. Ms. Suneetha Narreddy expressed agony that, in her pursuit of justice, she knocked on every door and was harassed, falsely prosecuted and targeted by the government which her father once helped build. 'Justice is still elusive as the killers are rich and powerful. This is not only my family's tragedy but it is a national failure, where criminals hijacked democracy itself. If we, as citizens and leaders, do not act, we will one day find our freedom, our Constitution, and our values in their hands', she added, hoping that the elected representatives would do the needful treating her as their sister.
