Top Hat review – ravishing musical taps immaculately off the silver screen
Adapted by Matthew White and Howard Jacques, its drama of mistaken identity faithfully follows the 1935 movie starring Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers but it has more Irving Berlin tunes, each more divine than the last. Phillip Attmore plays Jerry Travers, the avowed bachelor and Broadway star whose head is turned by the independently minded fashion model Dale Tremont (Lucy St Louis). She, in turn, mistakes him for the older, married Horace Hardwick (Clive Carter) and the whole thing plays out like an American Restoration drama but with added tap dance and swing.
It is ravishingly directed and choreographed by Kathleen Marshall, who was behind the winning 2021 revival of Cole Porter's Anything Goes at the Barbican theatre in London.
The twinkly eyed Attmore brings sublime tap all the way through but especially in the titular Top Hat, White Tie and Tails, complete with an immaculate dancing ensemble. There is incredibly silky singing from St Louis in songs such as Wild About You and Better Luck Next Time, and the central couple have a natural chemistry on stage.
Meanwhile, Horace and his wife Madge (Sally Ann Triplett, very amusing) bring anti-marital comedy, some of it predictable but entertaining nonetheless. Horace's British valet, Bates (James Clyde), who refers to himself in the royal 'we', is a dryly comic highlight, as is Italian fashion designer Alberto Beddini, hammily played by Alex Gibson-Giorgio.
It is a show that is extremely easy on the eye with gorgeous ostrich-feathered costumes (designed by Yvonne Milnes and Peter McKintosh) and a revolving art deco set (also designed by McKintosh) which gestures to the elegant opulence of the film. Some of the costumes honour the film too, especially Dale's silk and feather dress during her duet with Jerry in Cheek to Cheek.
Choreography goes from natty, bouncing tap to smooth, floaty numbers, and the latter have a swirling, romantic quality while the ensemble give the illusion of a far larger chorus line. Like Crazy for You, which played at the same theatre in 2022, this show seems raring for a London transfer. It stretches on for too long, and is not quite as spectacular as that musical, but the whole thing oozes style and wit. Heaven.

Striking students from Stage Skool in Motherwell set to wow audiences at Edinburgh Fringe Festival
This year they will be performing a production of Disney's Newsies Jr Performing arts students from a theatre group in North Lanarkshire are set to thrill audiences at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. It's a busy week for the young people from Stage Skool in Motherwell who will take to the stage at The Space, Grand Theatre in Edinburgh next week for morning shows from Monday to Saturday next week. The performing arts group has bases in Motherwell and Bathgate for those aged from eight to 16 years old, and students from both come together over the summer for Stage Skool Live. The intensive theatre program offers budding young stars the chance to work with professional directors, choreographers, and musical coaches to put on a full-scale production at one of the world's most exciting cultural events. This year they will be performing a production of Disney's Newsies Jr, a stage adaptation of the movie and Broadway musical based on the story of newsboys, young newspaper sellers who went on strike in New York in 1899. It's the third year running that Stage Skool Live has wowed audiences at the Fringe with Disney-related productions, with Frozen Jr in 2023 and Finding Nemo Jr last year proving a hit with audiences. The students in North Lanarkshire haven't had much time to feel nervous about the shows as they had another production to worry about with two performances of a teenage version of Six, a West End musical about the wives of Henry VIII, at South Dalziel Historic Building in Motherwell this week. Stage Skool was launched over a decade ago in West Lothian by owner Lindsay MacGregor, with the Motherwell branch of the group starting up six years ago. Stephen Dillon manages the Lanarkshire Stage Skool but works creatively across both bases. He's been working hard with the youngsters during the school summer holidays to ensure they are on top form. Stage Skool owner Lindsay MacGregor, said: 'We have two bases in Motherwell and Bathgate and we come together over the summer and collaborate. This year we have two productions. 'For the Fringe production we merge and have the kids from Lanarkshire and West Lothian working together. They will be performing from Monday to Saturday. 'Frozen totally sold out the first year and we moved to a bigger venue last year. It's amazing for our kids, who all come from different backgrounds. We had some of them over performing in Paris in July. 'Some of them have came back and went straight into rehearsals, they literally give up their whole summer holidays and dedicate it to performing arts. 'Stage Skool Live isn't just about putting on a show — it's about giving young people the tools, confidence, and stage to tell stories that matter. It's about growth, teamwork, and the thrill of live performance.' Flat in iconic Poirot building up for sale for £190k - but it's not exactly spacious
A studio flat in Barbican, London, is going up for auction later this month with a guide price of £190,000 before fees. Located on Charterhouse Square, the building is instantly recognisable as Whitehaven Mansions, the fictional home of Agatha Christie's famous detective Hercule Poirot. As well as exterior filming, a number of interior shots of the Grade II-listed Art Deco building were used for the programme during its 24 years in production. In 2019, the building was used again for filming, after being selected as a home for one of the leading characters of the Batman spin-off, Pennyworth. Built in 1936 by by Guy Morgan and Partners, the London building features classic Art Deco design and rare amenities for its era, including a rooftop garden with city views, an indoor swimming pool, sauna, gym and communal lounge. The block, which spans nine floors and is home to 120 flats, also has a porter service, a secure entry system and two lifts. Flat 28 Florin Court will appeal to buyers with a love of classic TV, as well as architecture and design. A canny investor could also be drawn to the studio's location and potential. And its City location means it could also be an ideal pied a terre. However, anyone who lives there will have to be comfortable with a small space, as it measures just 209 sq ft, or less than 20 sq m. The current minimum space standard says newly-built homes for one person should be at least 37 sq m. The studio flat is located on the third floor of the curved building. It has a bedroom and living space, and separate kitchenette and bathroom areas. The property has an enviable location, providing easy access to the City of London and the Elizabeth Line. It is close to both Barbican and Farringdon underground stations. The property is held on a 999 year lease from 1 April 2017, with around 991 years unexpired. The studio flat has an EPC rating of C and has not been inspected by Auction House, which is selling the property via auction in August. Viewings for the property are taking place on 1 August between 2.15pm to 2.45pm and on 5 August from 2.15pm to 2.45pm. Neeson recently said he didn't want to 'emulate' Nielsen in the new film, which was directed by Akiva Schaffer and hits screens on August 1. He told Empire magazine: 'I wouldn't say nerve-wracking, but every day I would go up to Akiva after we wrapped and say, 'How was it?' Because I just didn't know.
