HC not for trivial disputes, political parties told

Vijayawada
: The
high court
on Tuesday criticised
political parties
in the state for approaching the court for every trivial dispute.
In the last five-six years, political parties in the state have reduced the stature of the high court to the level of a second-class magistrate court, the HC bench observed.
Taking serious note of a house motion petition filed seeking protection for councillors of Tiruvuru who wanted to participate in the election process, the high court warned that it would take punitive action against the police, starting from the constable to the DGP, if they are found to be at fault. At the same time, if the petitioners are found to be at fault, exemplary costs of Rs 10 lakh would be imposed, the HC stated.
The petitioners' counsel stated that police were not providing any protection despite representations. Denying the allegations, the govt pleader stated that no representation was made as being claimed and police are not aware of the whereabouts of the petitioners. The representations given to the election commission were not enough according to the earlier orders of the high court, the govt pleader added. The counsel for the petitioners said the representation given to the election commission was forwarded to the commissioner of police.
Justice Y Lakshmana Rao
said everyone is taking the system for a ride. Directing the Vijayawada police commissioner to provide protection to the petitioners, Justice Lakshmana Rao warned that if the petitioners resorted to any wrongdoing by taking advantage of the protection, contempt of court proceedings would be initiated against them.

Rajya Sabha passes IIM Amendment Bill 2025 amid Opposition walkout

New Delhi, Aug 20 (UNI) The Rajya Sabha today passed the IIM (Amendment) Bill, 2025 by voice vote amid a walkout by the Opposition. The bill pertains to the establishment of an Indian Institute of Management (IIM) in Guwahati, Assam. With this, the bill has received the approval of both Houses of Parliament, as the Lok Sabha had already passed it earlier. The Opposition staged a walkout over their demand for a discussion on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls in Bihar, which was not accepted. Due to the uproar by the Opposition, the House was adjourned twice. When proceedings resumed at 2 PM, presiding Deputy Chairman Bhubaneswar Kalita called upon Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan to introduce and move the bill for discussion and passage. As soon as Pradhan stood up to speak, Opposition members began demanding a discussion on the electoral roll issue and started raising slogans near the Chair. Kalita allowed Leader of the Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge to speak, but when Kharge attempted to raise the electoral roll issue, the Chair disallowed it, stating that no discussion on matters other than the bill would be permitted. In protest, the Opposition members raised slogans and walked out of the House. Following a brief discussion and the Minister's reply, the bill was passed by voice vote. Some amendments to the bill had been proposed by Opposition members, but due to their absence from the House, these could not be moved. The bill provides for the establishment of an IIM in Guwahati. Until the first Board of Governors is formed, the institute will be run by a person appointed by the central government. The estimated cost for this institute is Rs 5,500 crore. The bill also includes amendments to the Indian Institutes of Management Act, 2017, declaring IIMs as institutions of national importance and providing for regulation of their functioning. Responding to the discussion, Pradhan said the bill fulfils a long-standing demand of Assam and that academic sessions would begin from this term itself. He added that student admissions and faculty recruitment would be done accordingly. He noted that this would be the 22nd IIM in the country, with a total cost of Rs 555 crore. Pradhan highlighted that India has become the world's fourth-largest economy and is on its way to becoming the third largest, attributing this progress to the skills of its youth and the contribution of national institutions. He accused previous governments of neglecting the Northeast. He said that while only 13 IIMs were established in the first 53 years since the inception of IIMs in 1961, the number has increased to 22 in the last 11 years under the Narendra Modi government. The Education Minister also mentioned that the UAE had requested India to establish IITs and IIMs there, in recognition of their achievements. As a result, such institutes have now been established in Abu Dhabi and Africa. Earlier, BJP's Geeta alias Chandraprabha initiated the discussion by saying that the pace of opening educational institutions has doubled since the Modi government came to power. She claimed that two new colleges and one new ITI are being opened every day in the country. YSRCP's Golla Babu Rao demanded that vacant faculty positions at the Visakhapatnam IIM be filled. Biju Janata Dal's Niranjan Bishi supported the bill and also raised the issue of filling vacancies in these institutions. AIADMK's M. Thambidurai raised the issue of student suicides in management institutes. NCP's Praful Patel welcomed the move to open an IIM in Assam and supported the bill. BSP's Ramji raised the issue of SC/ST students not receiving their PhD fellowships on time. He demanded that 50 percent of seats at the new institute be reserved for students from the Northeast. BJP's Kanad Purkayastha called the bill historic for the Northeast, stating that the people of Assam have been deprived of premier institutions for decades. UNI RBE SS

BJP councillors begin strike at JMC-H over corruption

1 2 Jaipur: Over 20 BJP councillors began an indefinite strike against JMC Heritage mayor Kusum Yadav, at the municipal corporation headquarters Wednesday, accusing the civic body of being neck deep in corruption and holding it responsible for poor sanitary conditions in Jaipur's Walled City area. Councillors sang hymns and offered prayers for the mayor and commissioner. Yadav, an independent councillor from ward 74, was made the mayor in Sept 2024 with support of councillors from BJP. In JMC Heritage, the current board has BJP in majority. "In the current board, fake land leases are being issued, and despite councillors informing the administration about the issue, no action is being taken. This is blatant corruption as land leases are issued only after all officials and the mayor sign it," said Subhash Vyas, a councillor part of the protest. Councillors demanded that a fair investigation must be conducted by an agency and wrongly issued leases must be cancelled. Councillor Manoj Mudgal, who is also the chairperson of the encroachment prevention committee, said, "In the general body meeting of JMC Heritage, a proposal of allotting Rs 1 crore for development work in each ward was passed. The amount was also sanctioned, but now funds are not being issued. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Fazendo a diferença no ambiente corporativo Siemens Energy Learn More Undo Sanitation conditions have already been deteriorating, and recently chief minister Bhajan Lal Sharma also expressed displeasure over it. " They further said that beat sanitation workers are also not being given to councillors. For every ward, five beat sanitation workers, apart from regular waste collection, were also approved by the board. Councillors said that until their demands are met, the protest will continue, and they threatened to go on a hunger strike in the coming days. "Corruption is taking place openly, which will not be tolerated under any circumstances. In the Civil Line Zone, fake leases of govt land worth crores of rupees have been issued, which must be investigated impartially," added Mudgal. Councillors from different wards, including Suresh Navriya, Uttam Sharma, Manak Sharma, Santosh Kanwar, Anshul Sharma, Jyoti Chauhan, Vikram Singh, Subhash Vyas, among others, joined the protest. Despite attempts, mayor Yadav and commissioner Nidhi Patel, did not respond to calls for a comment. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). Meet on outer ring road ends without breakthrough

Thiruvananthapuram: A high-level meeting on the outer ring road project from Vizhinjam to Navaikulam, chaired by principal secretary to the chief minister K M Abraham on Wednesday, ended without a breakthrough, leaving thousands of affected families in continued uncertainty. The meeting, which brought together the NHAI regional officer, project director and district collector, was expected to resolve long-pending compensation disbursal to landowners who surrendered land for the project. Sources confirmed that NHAI regional officer A K Janbaz informed the state govt that the Centre's recommended alignment change can only be finalized in Dec 2025, further delaying the project. This comes on top of existing setbacks, frustrating more than 6,000 families across 24 villages who have been waiting for compensation. Despite the state transferring Rs 700 crore to NHAI nearly a month ago, not a single rupee has reached landowners. District collector Anu Kumari urged NHAI to release compensation at least in areas that had received a 3D notification, but the agency expressed dissent. Meanwhile, landowner representatives, angered by repeated delays, warned of intensified protests. In July, they had threatened hunger strikes to press for action. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like They Were So Beautiful Before; Now Look At Them; Number 10 Will Shock You Reportingly Undo "The state govt and NHAI are doing nothing. We will intensify our protests," said action council convener S Chandramohan Nair, pointing out that the delay has left many families in deep distress. Delays are rooted in environmental and procedural roadblocks. A Supreme Court ruling in May 2025 invalidated post-facto environmental clearances, while the state environment impact assessment authority (SEIAA) lapsed in March, transferring approval responsibilities to the Union ministry. As a result, the northern stretch, from Thekkada to Navaikulam, remains without clearance, though the southern segment received approval in 2023. An RTI filed by landowner and legal expert K Raveendran Nair revealed no progress on the project's detailed project report (DPR) for the past two years. A 2023 RTI had disclosed the same status, raising questions about transparency and accountability. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
