10,000 miles in the best $100K sports car you can buy.

Porsche's GT4 means different things to different people. For some enthusiasts, it's the car you buy when you can't afford (or can't get an allocation for) a GT3. For me, it was simply my dream car. 414 horsepower of flat-six, four-liter, mid-engined, manual-transmission bliss. I wanted nothing more, nothing less.
The Porsche GT4 first debuted at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show as a 2016 model. Based on the 981 Cayman, it made 385 HP from a 3.8 liter engine and was available exclusively with a manual transmission. It was a wonderful car in every way but worldwide demand far outpaced its limited run of just 2,500 examples.That first GT4 came toward the end of the 981 Cayman's model run, with the standard Cayman 982 (the 718, if you're nasty) and its four-cylinder turbo power already on the horizon. Divisive as it was for its forced injection and 'missing' cylinders, I still bought one, and thought it was fantastic.
But when Porsche revealed the new 718 Cayman-based GT4 just two years later, with its naturally-aspirated four-liter engine, I was smitten. Porsche had made the perfect car in my eyes and I had to have one. While I always liked the look of the 981 GT4, I absolutely LOVED the appearance and stance of the 718 version, which dialed up the aggression and seemed to wear a finely-tailored suit in comparison.
The fact that it now had an 8k redline and was twelve seconds faster around the Nürburgring wasn't exactly working against it, either. Not that I was keeping score.
So, on Halloween of that year, I took delivery of my own new, manual transmission (a PDK option would come later) 718 GT4 at Porsche Colorado Springs. Beggars like me can't be Paint to Sample choosers so my GT4 arrived looking magnificent just the same in GT Silver, along with an MSRP of $99,200 (those were the days…) and just a handful of options—including said paint—for a grand total of $105,610.
And while I was one of the lucky ones who got away with paying sticker for their new GT4, a hundred grand was (and is) serious money for me. But it's also about as cheap as Porsche GT car ownership can be had, and, my GT4 has proven to be an incredibly economical car to own and operate, as well. What's more, it provides one of the most engaging and exhilarating driving experiences available, for any price.
And, now four years and 10,000 miles into my GT4 stewardship, here are my thoughts.Where to begin? It's almost all good. There's the raspy sound of the flat-six as it builds to redline. It's a potent powerplant—the four-liter—one that manages to be plenty stout around town but really comes into its own when fully rung out. The handling is exceptional, rewarding late braking and keeping the car planted until its Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2s gradually and predictably give up the ghost, inspiring a huge amount of confidence and coaxing you to push the car a little more with each turn.
The car looks fantastic, of course, though I sometimes wish I'd had the chance to spec it in Porsche's stunning Meerblau or rich Brewster Green. I genuinely believe the GT4, in both its iterations, ranks among the best Porsches ever made. And when you consider the price? The 718 GT4 has nearly all the essential goodness (and even more performance) of a more expensive and more costly to maintain 997.2 GT3, which is a car I adore. There, I said it.Every 718 GT4 scrapes its front end. Everywhere. With just 3.1 inches of ground clearance (and even less with my middle-aged frame behind the wheel), the 718 GT4's nose is about as low as it gets in a modern car. The scraping is not a nice sound, but the car can take it, and, luckily, replacement splitters are only about $350. You will become extraordinarily proficient, however, at navigating up driveway aprons at a 45° angle, in reverse.
And, there are times, especially here on Colorado's high-altitude mountain roads, when a bit more power (or forced induction) would be nice. But with the latter, you'd lose that incredible sound through the exhaust—and that's a tradeoff I'm more than willing to make.
That's it. Sure, there are times when I wish my car had Porsche's gorgeous carbon buckets but, to be honest, there are just as many times when I'm glad it doesn't.
Good question. In fact, at the time I bought my GT4, the Spyder could be had for even a little bit less than my hardtop. While it's mechanically identical to my car (and with a ride that's slightly more compliant), I never even considered one. I guess I'm just not really a convertible guy, and, the sun here in Colorado is no joke. Maybe I'm just a sucker for a good wing.
In retrospect, I'm sure I would've been just as happy had I gone with the Spyder. Unlike the 981 equivalent, the 718 Spyder is a true GT car. My pal Dan's got one and his love for it is clear in the more than 86,000 miles he's put on it in less than three years. His is almost certainly the highest-mileage Spyder in the country, if not the world. Prove me wrong. Smiles for miles.It's no secret that the 718 GT4 is an amazing and capable car. All modern Porsche sports cars are. What's truly impressive, though, is that even after over four years of ownership and 10,000 miles on the clock, I could list my car on Bring a Trailer tomorrow and sell it for exactly what I paid. Maybe more. The thing's a damn value proposition. Aside from fuel, annual services (mostly oil changes), and a new set of Cup 2 tires every few thousand miles, the car has cost me virtually nothing, even beyond warranty. It's bulletproof.
The Porsche 718 GT4 was my dream car. Four years in, it still is.

Having been hobbled by the Balance of Performance (BoP), the Porsche team will have a chance to stand atop the podium again on Sunday after the sprint race at Road America. Urs Keratle, the director for Porsche's 963 program, said that simulations have shown the team will 'be able to compete with the others. The reality we will see in qualifying and the race.' The subtraction of weight (nine kilograms) and a 5.2% increase in Stage 2 power for the Porsches in the BoP prior to Road America reflects the current sports car racing season's pattern in both the World Endurance Championship and IMSA. The best performing cars and their teams have been heavily penalized midway in the season by BoP to open the door to other manufacturers. There's more to come in the manufacturers' contest after the Glen victory, said David Salters, president of Honda Racing Corporation USA. The combination of the Meyers-Shank team and engineers from the HRC factory is beginning to pay dividends. Along with driver Tom Blomqvist, they successfully executed a challenging fuel strategy to grab the victory at the Glen from the Cadillac of Action Express Racing before celebrating at the Seneca Lodge. 'We are six races into the season and we're starting to show what we're made of,' said Salters. 'It was a great weekend, but we must keep pushing.' The Acura MSR squad gained 112 points in the factory title chase with its victories. The team likely needs to win at least two of the three remaining races to overcome the 90-point gap to Porsche Penske. Where Porsche Penske has no team orders, Acura MSR can employ split strategies and concentrate on just getting one car into Victory Lane. Blomqvist, who co-drove with Colin Braun on board the No. 60 ARX-06 at the Glen, is reconciled to his team now concentrating on the manufacturers title. 'We still stand a chance in the manufacturers, which is definitely a big goal of Acura's,' said Blomqvist. 'So, we haven't given up there, having won the last two events. Obviously, only one of the team's cars gets points for that. I think ultimately that's probably what we're going to focus on more than the drivers' title. Let's see.'

Porsche also said a new gas-powered compact SUV will arrive by 2028 as a successor to the outgoing . Porsche launched its electric Macan SUV last fall before introducing a refreshed version of its Taycan EV—which just won Car and Driver's EV of the Year award for 2025—this summer. But Porsche isn't abandoning its lineup of gas-powered cars, and in its first-half earnings report, the German automaker made two announcements about exciting upcoming internal-combustion vehicles: the updated 911 Turbo and a future fuel-sipping SUV that will replace the outgoing gas Macan SUV. A Potentially 700-HP Turbo S Porsche has already updated the majority of the expansive 911 lineup, including inserting a new hybrid powertrain into the GTS trim. Even the track-focused GT3 received some light tweaks for 2025, leaving the Turbo and Turbo S as the only models that carried over into 2025 unchanged. But on Porsche's earnings call, CEO Oliver Blume confirmed that the new Turbo S will be revealed later this year and will pack a hybrid powertrain of its own. We expect it to be joined by a non-S model too. The hybrid powertrain should make the new Turbo S even more rapid than before. The twin-turbocharged 3.7-liter flat-six in the current Turbo produces 572 horsepower, with the Turbo S upping the ante to 640 ponies. The T-Hybrid system in the GTS added an electric turbocharger and an electric motor that injects an extra 54 hp and 110 pound-feet of torque, bringing combined output to 532 hp. This means a hybridized Turbo S could be cranking out close to 700 hp. There will, however, likely be a weight penalty of roughly 100 pounds, if the GTS is any indication. A New Compact Crossover Although the gas-powered Macan, originally introduced way back in 2015, remains on sale for the time being in the United States, it is effectively being replaced by the Macan EV. Over in Europe, the internal-combustion Macan has already been pulled off the market due to regulatory reasons. But now Porsche has confirmed that its compact SUV will have a successor with a gas engine. Back in March, Porsche said it was considering a new gas-powered SUV, and now Blume has announced that this upcoming crossover will arrive in 2028. According to Blume, it will be differentiated from the Macan EV, and we think it could introduce a new nameplate. While 2028 doesn't give Porsche too much time to develop this new model, we expect it to ride on the Premium Platform Combustion (PPC) that underpins the new 2025 Audi Q5, allowing Porsche to get the SUV to market more quickly. This wouldn't be a surprise, since the current gas Macan shares its platform with the previous-generation Q5. The new Q5 uses a 268-hp turbocharged four-cylinder, while the SQ5 uses a turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6 that makes 362 hp. Both engines could find their way into the Macan successor. In the earnings call, Blume also confirmed that electric successors to the 718 Boxster and 718 Cayman are still coming but have been delayed. They will now go on sale after the Cayenne EV, which will be revealed later this year before sales start in 2026. This means the 718 EV will likely reach dealerships in 2027.
