Caitlin Clark's biceps and the bigger conversation around women and muscles

Caitlin Clark's biceps and the bigger conversation around women and muscles

Yahooa day ago

Thanks to a strain that's left her sidelined for weeks, all eyes are on Caitlin Clark's quad right now. But it's the Indiana Fever star's arms that had people talking in the days leading up to her second WNBA season.
It all started in March, when 23-year-old Clark was photographed cheering on her alma mater, the Iowa Hawkeyes, during the NCAA Big Ten tournament. 'Okkkkk hello arms!' one commenter wrote, adding a flexed bicep emoji in reaction to the point guard's noticeably muscular appearance.
Those muscles were on display when Clark's team photo was released in early May, prompting side-by-side comparisons to her 2024 physique. According to Clark herself, she's been intentionally bulking up since last year. 'I try to put on some weight and I've been working hard in the weight room,' she told reporters in August.
That ramped up in the offseason, per the Fever's head athletic performance coach, Sarah Kessler, who told ESPN that Clark was in the weight room four to five times a week. Cue the toned courtside pic that got tongues wagging in March — and a lot of body discourse that not everyone is comfortable with.
'Speculating about women's bodies generally and speculation of women athletes' bodies is not new,' Michelle Manno, a sociologist, associate provost for community enrichment at Northwestern University and the author of Denied: Women, Sports and the Contradictions of Identity, tells Yahoo Life. 'What stands out as new to me in this case is that the speculation is positive. … For the most part, we're seeing people applauding [Clark's] effort to get stronger and gain muscles between seasons.'
Indeed, adjectives like 'beautiful' have been used alongside 'jacked' and 'ripped' as commenters weigh in on Clark's muscles. One X user hailed her as having the 'peak female athlete form,' while an Instagram commenter wrote, 'Girl you show off those muscles. You worked hard on those. Lookin' great.'
According to Mikala Jamison, author of the newsletter Body Type, those compliments are a sign of evolving standards. 'It's hard to overstate how much conversations about women and their musculature has changed,' she tells Yahoo Life.
She references a survey done by writer Leigh Peele in 2009 (which Jamison wrote about in 2022) in which 2,000 women were polled on their views about weightlifting and the attractiveness of muscles. The majority of those surveyed indicated that they didn't like the look of muscles on their own bodies and figured men didn't find it attractive either. A majority also said they'd rather be 'too thin than either too fat or too muscular,' and when asked which female celebrity exemplified the 'muscular/bulky' look, many chose Hilary Swank (43%) and Jessica Biel (36%).
'There was this sense that any shade of muscularity on a woman's body wasn't something that, at least per this survey, was desired by a lot of women. And there are a thousand reasons for that in the culture and in media messaging,' says Jamison. 'But that has definitely changed over the years, and you see that in things like more women strength training regularly than ever before.'
A growing interest in lifting weights, eating more protein and paying more attention to the benefits of building muscle has roots in conversations about menopause and aging. However, the reaction to Clark's body in particular seems to be an indication that the positive messaging about stronger bodies could be reaching and influencing younger women as well.
The focus on Clark's muscles follows a general shift in gears in terms of how female athletes — and their bodies — are being discussed.
'People were talking about this a lot during the [2024] Olympics with Ilona Maher,' says Jamison, referring to the U.S. women's rugby player who won bronze in Paris last summer. 'She was on the cover of Sports Illustrated and she's not a super-slender, super-skinny woman. She's very muscular.'
After nabbing the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit digital cover last fall, Maher donned a bikini again to pose for the pages of the magazine's recently released 2025 print issue, which quotes her as saying, 'I hope people see my photos and understand that strength can be so beautiful and so feminine.' The latest issue has won praise for featuring various female athletes, including fellow Olympians Jordan Chiles and Gabby Thomas. 'How different my and many other women's lives would be if these strong bodies were the center of attention when I was growing up,' one fan commented.
'If you see more different types, sizes and shapes of bodies, it gives any person who is seeing those body types an understanding that there are many different ways that your body could look, or maybe that you want your body to look like,' Jamison points out.
But even still, who people praise is dependent on certain standards. 'If I think about athletes like Serena Williams or Brittney Griner, the commentary around their bodies throughout the course of their careers has been pretty uniformly negative,' says Manno. 'So when I see what's happening with Caitlin Clark, I have to think that her race and her gender expression' — i.e., being a white, straight woman — 'are really helping her in this moment.'
At the end of the day, the beauty standard for any and all women continues to be a tight line to walk, especially for those in sports, according to Manno. 'A lot of women athletes still navigate this very strong tension between wanting to be strong, wanting to do the things that they need to do to excel at their sport and still be accepted societally as looking, quote-unquote, appropriately feminine enough,' she says.

Blake Lively & Taylor Swift's Friendship ‘Strained' Amid Subpoena — Report

Blake Lively and Taylor Swift's friendship faces scrutiny amid a high-profile lawsuit. A new report reveals how tensions over It Ends With Us have impacted their longtime bond. The update follows news that lawyers plan to subpoena Swift in the ongoing case involving Lively and director Justin Baldoni. Blake Lively and Taylor Swift's longtime friendship has become strained amid Lively's ongoing legal dispute with It Ends With Us director Justin Baldoni. In December 2024, Lively filed a sexual harassment lawsuit against Baldoni, who later countersued Lively and her husband, Ryan Reynolds, for defamation. Court documents revealed that Baldoni claimed Swift was used to influence script changes. 'Taylor and Blake have talked, but it's strained,' an insider told Us Weekly, adding that they are no longer in regular contact. Taylor Swift will reportedly be subpoenaed for the trial beginning in March 2026. She has attempted to distance herself from the situation. According to a second insider, 'Taylor was shocked to be referred to in work messages sent to Blake's director and to be brought into this.' Swift's representative stated on May 9 denying any involvement with the film, stating, 'Taylor Swift never set foot on the set of this movie… The connection Taylor had to this film was permitting the use of one song.' The tension reportedly began months ago when a photographer questioned Reynolds about Travis Kelce unfollowing him on Instagram. Kelce's action-fueled speculation about a broader rift between the two couples. Swift wrapped her Eras Tour, then began avoiding public attention and focusing on setting boundaries. 'Taylor's biggest issue seems to be protecting herself emotionally and legally,' the first insider stated. Lively has since apologized to Swift. 'Taylor and Blake have spoken, and Blake [said she's sorry],' a source confirmed. While Swift remains forgiving, the insider noted, 'They are on OK terms now, but the friendship is still wounded.' Lively reportedly remains hopeful for reconciliation. Summer's arrival is the perfect excuse to finally act on your Pinterest board and switch up your hair color. Whether you've been waiting for the right moment to go blonde, add a striking twist to your brunette base, or go all out with a bolder hue, there are plenty of ways to zhuzh up your hair for the warmer weather. This year, we're in for a treat: expect everything from 'golden hour' blonde (a sunlit take on the classic honey blonde) to 'burnt sugar' brunette (a warmer, more caramelized take on brunette tones). Safe to say, there's no shortage of options for all skin tones and hair types. Below, we've quizzed esteemed colorists to break down the best hair color trends worth bookmarking this season. Burnt Sugar Brunette View this post on Instagram A post shared by Zoë Taylor (@zoetaylormakeup) According to Samantha Cusick, hairstylist and founder of her namesake London salons, 'burnt sugar' brunette is 'rich, warm, and caramelized in all the right places.' Make no mistake — it's far from your regular, one-dimensional brunette. Instead, she says, 'It's all about depth with golden undertones and subtle ribbons of amber that catch the light.' View this post on Instagram A post shared by Bree, The Golden Child ☀️ (@breecolter) Cusick also notes that this color works particularly well on olive and deeper skin tones, complementing them with 'a natural, sunlit effect that feels effortlessly sophisticated.' We love these shades on Bella Maclean and Bree Colter. Golden Hour Blonde View this post on Instagram A post shared by QUE HAIR SALON SYDNEY (@quecolour) In his summer hair trend report, hair artist Tom Smith shared that 'golden hour' blonde will reign supreme. This is a true fusion of copper and blonde, says Smith, 'intensely golden and full of depth and richness.' As seen on the likes of Lindsay Lohan, Abigail Cowen, Esther McGregor, and Gwendoline Christie, this color is a step up from the previously trending ' sunflower blonde ' as it strikes the perfect balance between warm and golden undertones. Take inspiration from this shade posted to Instagram by QUE Colour. Cusick notes that this particular trend primarily focuses on strategic lighting placement. 'It's a smart way to go lighter without a full transformation,' she says, and it can be achieved through adding face-framing golden highlights through the mid-lengths and ends. As for the name? 'This color creates a natural brightness that mimics that just-before-sunset glow,' she adds. Mocha Mousse Bronde View this post on Instagram A post shared by NJ Hairstylist (@glamcatt) Bronde — a mix between blonde and brunette — is getting a makeover for summer. Enter: mocha bronde, 'a monochromatic and muted' shade that suits a variety of skin tones, says Smith. Unlike the caramel hues that dominated summer 2024, Smith says this shade leans more neutral, and of course, it is influenced by the popularity of Pantone's Color of 2025: mocha mousse. Think: coffee and mushroom-esque tones that seamlessly blend through the lengths. Cusick describes this shade as 'rich, glossy, and low maintenance.' We love this color posted to Instagram by Caterina. Cherry Red View this post on Instagram A post shared by BLEACH (@bleachlondon) Babyliss ambassador and stylist Syd Hayes describes this shade as 'a vibrant, head-turning burst of juicy cherry red.' Not to be confused with burgundy or auburn, Hayes specifies that it is a true, medium-bright red with cool, almost raspberry undertones. This look posted to Instagram by BLEACH London is the perfect statement red. 'Red shades often intensify beautifully under sunlight, making them pop even more,' adds Hayes. Muted Auburn View this post on Instagram A post shared by Whitney Hayat (@whitneyhayat) Spotted on Smith's list of summer hair color trend predictions, and seen here on model Whitney Hayat, muted auburn offers a more wearable take on copper hair. The difference? It features earthy and auburn tones that will complement most skin tones without the intense orange-y hues, says Smith. To nail this shade, he advises topping up your hair with a color-depositing conditioner that enlists chestnut or soft copper tones. Try dpHUE Gloss+ in Strawberry, $38. Lemon Platinum View this post on Instagram A post shared by Jade Hart Hair (@jade_hart_hair) Smith describes this as 'a bright and gleaming lemon sorbet tone,' and predicts this striking blonde will trend thanks to its edgy yet ethereal appeal. 'If 'golden hour blonde' was the deeper, more copper-toned evolution of sunflower blonde, [then] lemon platinum is the brighter, fresher and cleaner alternative,' he says. You will have spotted this color on celebrities like Anya Taylor-Joy, Kirsten Dunst, and Kristen Stewart. Meanwhile, Marley Xavier, stylist and celebrity colorist at Hershesons, describes this shade as 'buttercream blonde' — 'creamy, soft and balanced; neither icy, nor overly warm.' Even better? It suits a wide spectrum of skin tones, adds Xavier. This shade on Mali-Koa, by BLEACH's head stylist Jade Hart, is stunning. Peekaboo Blonde View this post on Instagram A post shared by Sofia Richie Grainge (@sofiagrainge) 'This isn't your average all-over blonde,' shares Hayes. 'It features strategically placed, bright blonde ribbons or panels hidden underneath a darker top layer,' he explains. This effect is particularly beautiful when your hair moves, or is tied up or braided, as it reveals 'panel pops' for added dimension, adds Hayes. Even better? It's pretty low commitment. 'It's perfect for those who want a playful surprise element for ponytails, beach waves, and updos,' he says. This color on Sofia Richie Grainge is gorgeous. Honey-Lit Brunette View this post on Instagram A post shared by 𝔸𝕕𝕖𝕢𝕦𝕒𝕥𝕖 ℍ𝕒𝕚𝕣 𝕊𝕥𝕦𝕕𝕚𝕠 | 𝕋𝕣𝕦𝕤𝕥𝕖𝕕 ℍ𝕒𝕚𝕣 𝕊𝕥𝕦𝕕𝕚𝕠 💎 (@adequatehairstudio) According to Xavier, honey-lit brunette is set to be one of the most gorgeous and multi-dimensional shades of the season. 'Think late afternoon light melting into brunette tones; it's sun-warmed,' he says. Xavier also specifies that this particular hue focuses on 'hand-painted caramel or honey tones' throughout the mid-lengths and ends, which mimic the way natural sunlight hits the hair. He recommends it for those looking to enhance their natural brunette subtly. 'It flatters warm and neutral undertones especially well,' adds Xavier. Take a cue from this shade posted to Instagram by Adequate Hair Studio. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Samantha Cusick London (@samanthacusicklondon) 'This is blonde at its creamiest,' says Cusick. 'Think soft, cool tones with just a hint of vanilla that looks almost whipped in texture.' She recommends this color for those who want to be blonde without the typically harsh or icy finish. Already light? Cusick advises asking your colorist for a beige or a baby blonde toner to achieve the creamy effect. We love this color by Katie McKenna at Samantha Cusick Fitzrovia. Strawberry Glaze View this post on Instagram A post shared by IMOGEN ROSE HAIR | COPPER SPECIALIST & EDUCATOR (@imogenrosehair) Blurring the lines between blonde and copper, this color offers a fun twist on good old strawberry blonde. Think of strawberry glaze as 'a lighter take on copper with a subtle rosy twist,' shares Cusick. According to the pro, this color is perfect for natural redheads who want to elevate their tone, or blondes looking for something soft and summery without going too bold. Look to this shade by Imogen Rose for the ultimate inspiration. Salted Maple Brown View this post on Instagram A post shared by 어낵툴 천유나 단발 탈색•컬러전문 베이지컬러 치크펌 (@a_knack_yuna) That effortlessly cool maple brown color that you keep spotting all over Hailey Bieber's Instagram? This shade is essentially that, with a summer spin. 'Think warm, multi-dimensional brunette kissed by the sun,' says Hayes. 'This isn't just caramel; it's a sophisticated blend of a rich, warm brown base with subtle, warm blonde ribbons woven throughout, mimicking natural sun-bleached pieces. It embodies effortless summer highlights while maintaining depth,' he adds. Hayes applauds this color for its low-maintenance nature: 'The regrowth is forgiving and as it warms in the sun, [you'll] get even more dimension, preventing a washed-out look.' It's also a universally flattering shade that will complement all skin tones, particularly those with warmer undertones. Hairstylist A Nack nails it here. California Blonde View this post on Instagram A post shared by Joana Lefebvre (@joanalefebvre) Ever think about rocking that LA-inspired, effortlessly chic blonde? Enter: 'California blonde' — a foolproof choice for the summer. 'Soft, sun-faded and totally effortless, California blonde blends golden highlights with a creamy base that looks like it's been lifted naturally over long beach days,' shares Xavier. 'It's the epitome of low-maintenance luxury that suits warm or neutral undertones beautifully,' he adds. According to Xavier, the finish is relaxed, radiant, and distinctly West Coast, much like this color on Joana Lefebvre. 12 Summer 2025 Hair Color Trends Predicted By Experts written by Denise Primbet Photo: Via @bleachlondon.
