Travel expert warns about bodily function that can set off airport scanners after passenger is stopped by TSA
A plane passenger recently sparked a debate about whether or not one particularly embarrassing bodily function can set off security scanners after they shared an awkward incident that occurred while they were at the airport via Reddit.
The traveler explained that their 'crotch' area had been 'flagged' while they were going through the security scanner and that they had no idea why.
And many users wondered if it was due to excessive sweating in their pants.
'I flew for the first time in 15 years this week and both airports flagged my crotch at the arms-up scanner,' the traveler explained in their now-viral Reddit post.
'I don't care about the pat down, they were polite and professional and it doesn't bother me, but I'm wondering what did it.
'I'm a midsize adult woman (169 pounds, five-foot-eight-inches) and was wearing bike shorts and normal underwear.
'I don't have any medical devices or piercings, but I do have a uterine fibroid. Nothing was in my pockets.
'Any thoughts on what could have set it off? I read that fibroids could possibly alert, and it was the exact same spot on my groin both times. More just curious than anything else, it made my wife and I laugh.'
People quickly responded to the post and many theorized that crotch sweat was the reason the person was stopped.
'Could be: clothes (baggy, etc.), sweat, position (not on footprints, too wide or too narrow), zipper, too many layers, reflective stuff, ghosts, etc.,' one person wrote.
'Were you sweating?' someone else questioned.
'Sweat, feminine products (liners, pads, depends), could be anything but those seem to be culprits,' another added.
A different user shared: 'Last time I flew out of my home airport of Tampa, I got searched too, the guard said something unnerving like "swamp rot" or "swamp crotch" or something similarly embarrassing.'
Shawna Malvini Redden, a TSA expert, said sweat is one of those unique things that can indeed set off the scanner's alarm.
'Perspiration is probably the weirdest thing that can set off the scanners,' she previously detailed to Reader's Digest.
'It has to do with millimeter wave technology and how the waves bounce off water.'
The expert also said that since the machines can often set off false alarms, countries such as France and Germany have banned them.
It's more than just sweat that can have you stopped, in fact, there's a slew of body features that might set off the airport scanner.
Thick hair, hair clips, piercings, wire in undergarments, and external tumors may also raise alarm.
However, no need to worry. If something on your body sets off the scanner, normally, it will only require a quick pat-down and you'll be good to go.
The scanners debuted after 9/11 and boasted that they were so efficient they could see the sweat on someone's back, according to ProPublica.
Trained offers learned to recognize normal sweat patterns so they could detect a threat, Kip Hawley, TSA administrator from 2005 to 2009 said per the outlet.
She said sweat actually helps officers detect a threat because if something had something glued or taped to the body it would change a person's natural sweat pattern.

Woman ruins flight for other passengers with 'smelly' behaviour
A plane passenger has accused a woman of ruining their flight with her bad-smelling feet. They filmed the woman sticking her feet through the gap between the seat and the plane wall and resting them on the armrest of the person in front. In the footage, the woman wearing skin-coloured tights, appears to be sleeping with her feet raised. The alleged incident took place on June 29 on an Air China flight from Qingdao to Beijing. The person that filmed the footage said they noticed a strong odour lingering nearby when the flight took after. After looking around, they discovered the woman's feet perched on the armrest next to their seat. The upset passenger said: 'I was sleeping and was woken up by the smell. 'I couldn't call a flight attendant immediately because it was during departure, but I pressed the call button mid-flight. 'I told them what was happening, and they gave her a pair of slippers. 'However, for the remaining 30 minutes of the flight, she kept pushing my chair with her knees. It was a very uncomfortable flight.' The affected passenger added that the woman made the flight unpleasant for them and other fliers. Meanwhile, a flight attendant has also shared a smelly passenger issue that she thinks should be illegal. Posting on TikTok, cabin crew member Cher (@cherdallas), says she thinks tourists should 'go to prison' for breaking one key etiquette rule on their flight. According to Cher, passengers who don't shower before they get on the plane are the worst kind of traveller. She moans: 'There is zero reason that I should be smelling a stranger's body odour radiating off of their warm body at 5 o'clock in the morning. 'It's always men. Sometimes it's ladies that are having a lady problem that nobody has told them about but usually it's men. Wash yourself.

These are the most boring cities in the US
While booking your summer vacation, you may want to avoid these most boring cities in the United States, according to one analysis. It's always exciting visiting a new place and finding out what it has to offer. While experiences vary, a recent analysis by FinanceBuzz, a personal finance site, found which cities people may find boring based on activities and dining options available. FinanceBuzz analyzed 75 of the biggest cities in the country and rated them from most to least boring. The ratings were based on population makeup, culinary scene, outdoor activities, nightlife and celebrations and things to do. Here's the list of the top 10 most boring cities in the U.S: Jacksonville, Florida Jacksonville topped FinanceBuzz's boring scale over its large number of chain restaurants and its low number of nightclubs and concert venues compared to other cities. 'There are large stretches of the city where population density is relatively low, naturally leading to lower instances of things like nightclubs and award-winning restaurants,' FianceBuzz said in its recently published report. Wichita, Kansas Wichita has a good amount of outdoor recreational activities but only has one restaurant recognized by the James Beard Foundation for exceptional achievement in the culinary arts in recent years. 'Wichita also ranks in the bottom five in the country in terms of international visitors per capita, indicating that it isn't offering much in the way of eye-catching attractions for outsiders,' FinanceBuzz said. Corpus Christi, Texas Corpus Christi has no award-winning restaurants and doesn't offer many things to do compared to other cities. The city is 'in the bottom 15 when it comes to the number of sports teams in the city and bottom 10 in terms of must-do attractions per capita,' FinanceBuzz said. Sioux Falls, South Dakota Sioux Falls has several restaurants with James Beard awards, but it also has 'the highest percentage of eateries that are chain restaurants of any city in the country,' FinanceBuzz said. The city also struggles with fun attractions and has few sports teams. Memphis, Tennessee Memphis not only has 'the 12th-fewest number of annual events and celebrations relative to population size,' according to FinanceBuzz, but the quality of its parks and the number of hiking trails leave something to be desired. San Antonio, Texas FinanceBuzz did mention some highlights of San Antonio, such as the Alamo and River Walk, but when nightfall comes, there aren't many clubs and concert venues to visit compared to other cities. Oklahoma City, Oklahoma More than half the food joints in Oklahoma City are restaurant chains and it may be hard to find hiking trails compared to other cities. The city also has 'some of the worst parks in the country,' FinanceBuzz said. Columbus, Ohio Despite being a college town, Columbus 'has the 14th-lowest rate of nightclubs per capita,' FinanceBuzz said. The city also struggles with fun attractions. Tallahassee, Florida While Tallahassee has a young and vibrant population thanks to Florida State University, it may be hard to find fun attractions, concerts or sports games in the area compared to other cities, according to FinanceBuzz's analysis. The city also has no award-winning restaurants. Phoenix, Arizona Phoenix 'has the sixth-lowest rate of annual celebrations and events per capita in the country,' according to FinanceBuzz, and concert venues are scarce compared to other cities.

Trump's policies could cause a significant drop in US tourism, study says
A report by the World Travel and Tourism Council indicates that Donald Trump 's policies risk alienating international travelers and could cost the U.S. economy billions in Tourism. The U.S. is projected to be the only country out of 184 to see foreign visitor spending fall by 2025, contrasting with a booming tourism industry in Mexico. The U.S. economy is on track to lose $12.5 billion in international spending this year, with a potential total deficit of $28.8 billion in international spending this year, compared to original forecasts. This decline is partly driven by an estimated 20 percent drop in Canadian visitors and a 17 percent drop in Western European visitors, including those from Britain and Germany. Alarming reports of foreign tourists being denied entry or detained, alongside concerns among U.S. citizens about re-entry inspections, are contributing to the downturn.
