15% of Army time lost to fake news during Op Sindoor: CDS Gen Anil Chauhan
Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Anil Chauhan has highlighted the significant challenge posed by misinformation during Operation Sindoor, revealing that approximately 15 per cent of the armed forces' time was dedicated to tackling false narratives.
Speaking on the sidelines of the Shangri-La Dialogue, General Chauhan said, 'Combating fake news was a constant effort. Our communication strategy was deliberate; we chose to be measured, not reactive, because misinformation can quickly distort public perception during high-stakes operations.'
Elaborating on India's approach to countering disinformation, General Chauhan pointed out that the country's narratives are grounded in credibility, even if they sometimes emerge slowly. 'India has always built its narratives on solid ground, even if we've sometimes been slow to present them,' he said. 'For instance, in the first three days, two women officers were our primary spokespeople because the actual military leadership were directly engaged in fast-moving operations. It was only after the 10th that the DGMOs came forward to brief the media.'
Cyber challenges limited in scope
Addressing concerns about cyber warfare during the conflict, General Chauhan acknowledged its presence but emphasised its limited impact on core military operations. 'As someone directly involved in these operations, I can say that cyber did play a role in the conflict, but its impact was limited. While both sides did experience attacks, including some denial-of-service efforts, our military systems are air-gapped, meaning they're not connected to the internet and are therefore largely secure,' he said.
The evolution of warfare
Addressing an event on 'Future Wars and Warfare' on Friday, General Chauhan underscored the complexity of modern combat. 'Modern warfare is undergoing a complex convergence of tactical, operational and strategic layers; old and new domains (land, air, sea, cyber and space); and even of time and space. This convergence reshapes tactics, demanding demassification of battlefields, distributed force application, non-linear operations and a move away from large static platforms toward flexible, deceptive strategies,' he noted.
General Chauhan stressed the importance of real-time integration across different domains of warfare. 'What matters most in modern warfare is the networking of systems and real-time integration across air, land, sea and cyber domains. If you have great tech but it's not connected, you can't fully leverage it. We must also carefully consider where the cutting edge of technology should reside- in the weapon, the platform, or the network? That's a key strategic question,' he said.
Structural reforms
Reflecting on the progress in military reforms, the CDS highlighted the shift toward more integrated and agile structures. 'Regarding structural reforms, earlier we didn't have true jointness or integration in the military. Now, after initiatives and operational experiences, we are moving toward integrated commands and leaner, more flexible structures. We'll need separate organisations for drones, EW, UTAPs (Unmanned Teaming Aerial Platforms), etc,' he said.
He also pointed to the need for doctrinal updates to match the changing nature of warfare. 'Doctrinally, we must update our understanding of multi-domain operations, cyber, space, ISR, and joint targeting; all of this needs work. Even our professional military education is changing. For the first time, we have a truly joint staff course where 40 officers from all three services train together for a full year. That's a major shift,' he said.

Amit Shah in Kolkata: TMC demands Shah to quit over Pahalgam
The Trinamool Congress has demanded Union Home Minister Amit Shah's resignation over the Pahalgam incident in Jammu and Kashmir, and called on the senior BJP leader to take responsibility for 'all the failures' that led to the terrorist attack. Amit Shah, who was on a two-day visit to Kolkata, held a meeting with state BJP leaders and party workers at the Netaji Indoor Stadium, on Sunday. He hailed PM Narendra Modi for 'deciding to carry out Operation Sindoor' and came down heavily on the TMC and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for 'appeasement', which he also blamed for infiltration from Bangladesh. The TMC, meanwhile, accused Shah of playing politics in the name of Operation Sindoor at a time when TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee is part of a multi-party delegation of MPs, who have been sent to foreign countries to appraise governments abroad regarding the strikes in Pakistan. 'The Home Minister has to take responsibility for all the failures, and must resign. He has alleged that we have spoken against Operation Sindoor, but we have not said anything against it…He said our leader (Mamata) should ensure that there is no infiltration, but it is the BSF who is guarding… The Home Minister … is a failure,' said state minister Chandrima Bhattacharya. 'Pahalgam he had no information, due to their negligence so many died, have they caught all the terrorists? Not one, Jammu and Kashmir police belongs to whom?' TMC MP Sagarika Ghose said, 'The Home Minister has come to Bengal and acts like a BJP worker, using cheap language against our CM. Would any Opposition leader be allowed to talk like this?… Divisiveness is his politics… He is talking about infiltration, can he say how infiltration took place in Pahalgam? He has failed as a Home Minister and must resign.' She alleged, 'BJP is the biggest 'washing machine' that cleans away corruption cases… all ED cases are in opposition-ruled states… Suvendu Adhikari, sitting beside Shah has also been washed in the same machine.' 'What have you done for women? In the RG Kar case, the state police caught the culprit, what about Hathras, Unnao in UP? Do not play with women,' Bhattacharya said. 'BJP should stop the crocodile tears and should give West Bengal the money that is pending.' TMC MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar hit out at Shah alleging that he is 'dreaming that BJP will come to power in Bengal in 2026'. '…They have come to sell sindoor, the PM had come two days back now the home minister has come. Sindoor is the pride of married woman in India, be careful your hands will burn,' Dastidar said.

BCI chairman seeks release, fair trial for arrested Instagram influencer Sharmishta Panoli
Bar Council of India (BCI) chairman Manan Kumar Mishra on Sunday called for immediate release and fair trial for Sharmishta Panoli, the Instagram influencer who was arrested by Kolkata Police for allegedly making a post claiming the Hindi film actors were silent on Operation Sindoor. The senior advocate and Rajya Sabha member said that he was standing firmly with Panoli, whose arrest and judicial custody for a now-deleted social media video despite her immediate apology represented "an absolute failure of justice and a blatant assault on freedom of expression". The 22-year-old influencer, a resident of Kolkata and enrolled in Pune's Law University, was arrested from Gurugram on Friday night. She was on Saturday produced before a Kolkata court, which sent her in judicial custody till June 13. "It is deeply troubling that the same government that opposed Operation Sindoor -- a decisive counter-terror operation -- meant to avenge the brutal killing of innocents, now seeks to silence a young law student for questioning such similar double standards," said Mishra in a statement. A mere wrong choice of words cannot be called blasphemous and a young law student being made a scapegoat and subjected to harsh legal action, while past atrocities on particular communities by the government-sponsored persons and entities remained unaddressed was "unconscionable", the statement added. "True democracy demands impartiality, restraint and the equal protection of rights, not selective outrage and vendetta," the statement said. "I call upon the Bengal government and its police to abandon this dangerous path of targeting select voices and to uphold the rule of law for all. I demand Sharmishta's immediate release, a fair trial, and an end to the double standards that have long plagued the state's administration of justice," said Mishra.

Deendayal's ‘integral humanism' behind Modi govt's welfare measures: Nadda
The Narendra Modi government has empowered women, farmers and marginalised sections of society by taking various measures for them, while others only talked about doing so, BJP president and Union Minister J P Nadda said on Sunday. From putting the country on the path of economic progress to lifting 25 crore people above the poverty line, the government under PM Narendra Modi's leadership has launched varioius welfare schemes for all sections, drawing inspiration from Jana Sangh ideologue Deendayal Upadhyaya's idea of 'integral humanism', Nadda said. The BJP chief was addressing the valedictory session of a two-day conclave to commemorate 60 years of Upadhyaya's lectures on integral humanism. 'Our traditions were not created in two days; they are a result of experiences of thousands of years,' he said, stressing the need to expound Indian economic thought. Nadda said that India as a country of 140 crore people cannot be centralised. 'We have to be a decentralised system,' he said. 'World standards cannot be the standards we have to adhere to; we have to have our Indian standards,' he said. He said this might not have seemed possible in Upadhyaya's time, but under PM Modi's leadership every parameter was being prepared around Indian standards. He said Upadhyaya at that time advocated 'swadeshi' and India could say today that self-reliance is the order of the times. 'We were even purchasing idols of Ganesh ji from China. Today, we are third in the toy industry,' Nadda said. 'We are also third in the automobile market.' He said that India had made strides in defence production too. 'We witnessed the success of Operation Sindoor and that of the BrahMos (missiles) as well. Our defence production has reached `1.3 crore,' he said. Under PM Modi, India had established an economic model aligning 'integral humanism; with 'Sabka Saath Sabka Vikas', he said. Recalling Upadhyaya's message that the economy was not assessed from the person on the top of the ladder but the one at its bottom, Nadda said, 'We have taken inspiration from his Antyodaya concept (uplifting the poorest).' Nadda underlined that Upadhyaya was the inspiration for the free gas cylinder scheme — PM Ujjwala Yojana — for women. He said Swachh Bharat Mission and welfare schemes for farmers launched by the PM were also inspired by Upadhyaya. He said the government has provided cooking gas connections to more than 10 crore households, constructed 12 crore toilets and built four crore pukka houses. There is a need to understand how the government under Modi's leadership has empowered women, farmers and the marginalised sections of society, and brought them into the mainstream, he said.
