Criminals' morale sky-high: Chirag Paswan slams ally on Patna hospital shooting

India Today5 days ago
Union Minister Chirag Paswan on Thursday slammed his ally JD(U)-led Bihar government over the rising crime in the state, saying the morale of the criminals became sky-high. His response came after a prisoner out on parole for medical treatment was shot dead by five unidentified assailants inside a private hospital in Patna earlier today.Paswan, who is the Union Minister of Food Processing Industries, and the chief of the Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas), an NDA ally, questioned the functioning of the police and administration, saying it was "beyond comprehension".advertisement"Law and order in Bihar has become a serious concern today. Murders are happening every day, and the morale of criminals is sky-high. The functioning of the police and administration is beyond comprehension," he tweeted in Hindi.
"The incident of criminals openly firing inside Paras Hospital, located in a residential area of Patna today, is proof that criminals are now directly challenging the law and administration," he said.Paswan said that rising crime just months before Bihar Assembly polls, set to be held by the end of this year, was worrisome and urged the administration to take steps to improve law and order."The rising criminal cases just before the Bihar legislative election are worrisome. It is hoped that the administration will soon take concrete and strict steps to bring law and order back on track," he said.According to police, the shooting took place at Paras Hospital in the city's Raja Bazaar area. The victim, identified as Chandan Mishra - an accused in a murder case in Buxar district - had been released from Beur Jail on medical parole and was admitted to the hospital for treatment.CCTV footage from inside the hospital corridor showed five armed men barging into Chandan Mishra's room and opening fire at him. After the attack, all five assailants fled the hospital premises. The incident came amid a sharp rise in shootings across Bihar, including capital Patna, and triggered sharp political reactions, with the opposition accusing the Nitish Kumar-led government of failing to curb rising crime in the poll-bound state.- EndsMust Watch

Red crusader and the last of CPM's founders: Ex-CM of Kerala VS Achuthanandan dies at 101

VS Achuthanandan THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A singular chapter of Kerala 's red history turned its last page Monday. Former CM Velikkakathu Sankaran Achuthanandan - firebrand Marxist, CPM 's founding member, and Kerala's conscience-keeper - died aged 101 in a private hospital in Thiruvananthapuram at 3.20pm after 28 days on life support. VS, as he was known across political aisles, was hospitalised after a heart attack on June 23. Trusted comrades stayed by his side to the end. Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan rushed in for a final glimpse. Funeral will be held Wednesday evening in Alappuzha. Public homage begins Monday evening at AKG Centre in Thiruvananthapuram, continues Tuesday at Secretariat Durbar Hall, and concludes at Alappuzha Town Hall. Born on Oct 20, 1923, in Alappuzha to Velikkakathu Sankaran and Akkamma, he lost his mother at four and father at 11. Hunger cut short school at Class 7. The "chovan" (Ezhava) boy faced casteist jeers, but his resolve only hardened. At 21, he was organising Kuttanad farm workers. By 1940, he joined Communist Party. Jail, underground life, resistance - his early life reads like Kerala's own left-wing chronicle. Achuthanandan became CPM state secretary (1980-92), was elected to the assembly four times, and led the state as CM from 2006 to 2011 - the first working-class communist in India to do so. He twice served as opposition leader, and his loss at Mararikulam in 1996 polls shocked even his critics. His brand of politics was not of quiet obedience. He challenged CPM brass, openly taking on party honchos he dubbed "crafty revisionists". His feud with Pinarayi cost him a politburo seat. Yet he never broke from the party. He led anti-corruption crusades, exposed sex scandals involving ministers and film stars, and sent former minister R Balakrishna Pillai to jail. A green activist before the phrase existed, he battled land grab and paddy reclamation. Even in his 90s, he hired a tutor to learn Hindi after being named administrative reforms panel chief. Supporters called him the soul of CPM. With his passing, the last of the founding reds was gone.

Scrap panel formed for 3 language policy: Forum

Kolhapur: A forum advocating against the imposition of Hindi has called for the immediate dissolution of state govt-appointed panel led by Narendra Jadhav. The forum is also demanding a permanent notification from the govt assuring that Hindi will never be introduced as a compulsory subject for Standard 1 to 5. During a press conference in Kolhapur, Dipak Pawar, an activist with Marathi Abhyas Kendra and a leading voice in the anti-Hindi imposition movement, said while state govt revoked the resolutions making Hindi a third compulsory language from Std I in Maharashtra, it subsequently formed a panel to review the three language policy. "The govt must abolish the panel as there is no need for it. We will not let the govt implement the three-language policy as prescribed by the National Education Policy (NEP). We also demand that govt must notify that henceforth, permanently, there will be no introduction of Hindi in schools between Standard I and V," he said. Pawar added that to ensure the autonomy of Balbharti, the compulsion of NCERT books should not be completely enforced. "There should be a change in the National Education Policy (NEP) of the Centre. English language is a compulsory subject from Standard I. The govt must recommend making an amendment and start teaching English from Standard III," he said. "We also demand that those students who excel in academics by learning in Marathi should a;sp get preference in govt jobs and higher education," he added.
