.
Speaking after inaugurating the centenary auditorium with a life-size statue of the late social justice warrior L Ilayaperumal, constructed at a cost of Rs 6.39 crore at Lalpuram in Chidambaram, Stalin pointed out that leaders of the Dravidian, Marxist, Gandhian and Ambedkarite movements were on the stage united.
'This unity is Tamil Nadu. Thirumavalavan (VCK President Thol Thirumavalavan) emphasised this, and I reaffirm it.
When Tamil Nadu is united like this, no saffron agenda from Delhi will succeed here," he said.

But is that enough? No. To build a society of self-respect, we must continue our long journey — and we are. That's why we've decided to remove the word 'colony' from govt documents,' he said.
'We've requested the Prime Minister that the caste suffix 'in' used to denote SC/ST in official names be changed to 'ir' as a mark of respect. We've renamed school and college hostels as 'Social Justice Hostels', removing caste identifiers," Stalin said.
Stalin admitted that everything would not change overnight. 'The journey toward social liberation is long, and it takes time. But change will come. It will come. And I, Muthuvel Karunanidhi Stalin, will be the one to bring that change. The Dravidian model govt will play its role with absolute commitment," he said.
He said the govt launched the 'Ungaludan Stalin' (Stalin with You) scheme to act swiftly on the public's petitions on late chief minister and Congress stalwart P Kamaraj's birth anniversary.
'Before the 2021 assembly elections, I promised under the 'Stalin in your constituency' scheme that I would resolve petitions within 100 days. After becoming chief minister, I created a separate department named 'Chief minister in your constituency' to fulfil that promise. Because of that, people trusted the govt and began submitting petitions. To support that, we created another department - 'Chief minister's address'.
Through the 'CM with people' initiative, we've conducted more than 5,000 camps across Tamil Nadu and resolved lakhs of petitions," he said.
He said the govt launched the next phase of the 'Ungaludan Stalin' (Stalin with You) campaign. 'Around 10,000 camps will be held throughout the state. Volunteers will visit every household and inform people about the time and place of the camps. Applications can be submitted for 46 govt services, including the Rs 1,000/month Kalaignar women's entitlement scheme.
If eligible women haven't received the amount yet, they can apply at the camp, and it will be provided.
The purpose of this initiative is to take the govt to where the people are. Govt officers and officials will now come looking for you. Health camps will also be held alongside. This is what defines the Dravidian model govt — identifying the people's needs and solving them," he said.
A release from the DIPR later in the evening said Stalin announced that a new bus stand at Rs 20 crore would be established at Chidambaram, a new residential school for tribal students would be set up at Ariyankuppam in Cuddalore district, a new Srimushnam taluk would be carved out from Kattumannarkoil taluk to serve the

delta region better, a boating jetty including pathways and other facilities would be set up at a cost of Rs 10 crore at Veeranam lake, and a non-leather footwear components manufacturing cluster would be developed in 150 acres at Sakkarakuppam at a cost of Rs 75 crore to provide employment opportunities for women from Cuddalore, Kurinjipadi and Panruti constituencies.

Jagdeep Dhankhar, the most controversial constitutional VP in post-1947 India
The Constitution of India's description of the Vice President as an "ex-officio Chairman of the Rajya Sabha" who 'acts as President when the latter is unable to discharge his functions due to absence, illness or any other cause', is a rather innocuous description of the persona of Jagdeep Dhankhar. Rarely, if ever, has a constitutional position been as controversial as this once-centrist politician from Rajasthan, whose surprise resignation on `health' grounds made him the first Vice President to quit for reasons other than contesting presidential polls or taking over as President after winning elections. While disagreements between the Opposition and the Vice-President in his capacity as the Rajya Sabha Chairman is commonplace in India's parliamentary politics, what Dhankhar did was to elevate this rivalry to the level of outright hostility. Elected Vice-President in August 2022, his term as the Rajya Sabha Chairman began on a controversial note during the Winter Session that year as he called the Supreme Court's 2015 judgment striking down the National Judicial Appointments Commission (NJAC) Act a 'glaring instance' of 'severe compromise' of parliamentary sovereignty and disregard of the 'mandate of the people'. Since then, there have been several instances when he and Opposition MPs clashed on a regular basis. In August 2023, Dhankhar told the Opposition that he 'could not and would not' direct Prime Minister Narendra Modi to be present in the House as it was the PM's prerogative, like any other MP, to come to Parliament. He made this statement as the Opposition benches continued to demand the PM's presence in the Rajya Sabha to address them on the issue of violence in Manipur. Ties between the Rajya Sabha Chairman and the Opposition hit a low during the Winter Session of 2023 when 146 MPs were suspended from both Houses of Parliament, mostly over their demand for Union Home Minister Amit Shah's statement on a Parliament security breach, followed by a discussion on the matter. It was the highest-ever number of suspensions in a Parliament session. For the BJP, Dhankhar did not serve the purpose he was elected for. Says political analyst Amitabh Tewari: "For the BJP, Dhankhar did not serve the purpose he was elected for. Despite his farmer background, he was unable to influence agitators. He became too abrasive and partisan in the House.' In December 2024, Dhankhar became the first person holding one of the top two constitutional posts in the country to face the prospect of impeachment as the Opposition submitted a notice to move a no-confidence motion against him, which was rejected. Things reached a stage when the Rajya Sabha became a virtual.

V S Achuthanandan: A Rebel who redefined Kerala's political battles
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: It was V S Achuthanandan's wont to see divides everywhere. Where none existed, he would create one. He would position himself on one side and wage a battle. He has won some; lost some, and transformed himself in the process. His political longevity has surprised and irked many, for he was the archetypal voice of opposition – in his party and the larger society. As CPM state secretary (1980-1992), he ruled with an iron fist. Later on, however, he transformed himself into a critical insider, waging pitched battles against power concentrated in the hands of one-time party proteges. He was a hawk, who wouldn't budge from his notions of doctrinal purity, no matter what. That essentially meant he had to swim against the organisational tide. Though he was one of the 32 founding leaders of CPM in 1964, his deviation from the party line began the very next year. In 1964-65, almost the entire CPM leadership was accused of being Chinese spies and jailed during the India-China war. As a prisoner at the Poojappura Central Prison, VS organised prisoners and exhorted them to donate blood for Indian soldiers. The party prison committee rejected his proposal saying it went against Marxist-Leninist principles.

Timing & motive: Opposition sees more than illness in Jagdeep Dhankhar's sudden resignation, alleges deeper political rift
Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar's abrupt resignation on the first day of the Monsoon Session on Monday has sent significant ripples through India's Parliamentary system and drawn a flurry of political responses, particularly from the country's singlest largest Opposition party - the Congress. While Dhankhar cited health reasons in his letter to President Droupadi Murmu, several Opposition leaders took to social media platform X to raise questions about the true motivations behind his exit—pointing to possible political undercurrents and deepening institutional tensions. While, he commended Dhankar's commitment to procedural propriety, he also noted "there are far deeper reasons" for the move. — Jairam_Ramesh (@Jairam_Ramesh) Congress MP Mallu Ravi expressed doubts over the official explanation, calling the resignation an outcome of 'political ill-health.' He speculated that Dhankhar's exit may be linked to the BJP's strategy ahead of the Bihar elections. 'Perhaps the BJP government wanted to appoint someone more useful in the current political landscape,' he said. Live Events "Now in a truly unprecedented move, Shri Jagdeep Dhankar has resigned. He has given health reasons for doing so. Those should be respected. But it is also a fact that there are far deeper reasons for his resignation," he wrote in his X post. Meanwhile, Congress leader Udit Raj also hinted at political motives behind the timing, especially in light of the anticipated discussions in the Monsoon Session of the Parliament. "There are several important issues like the Operation Sindoor matter and the voter list in Bihar... Jagdeep Dhankhar's presence is essential for all these matters. I also find it a bit strange. Was this done to avoid these issues? I am not questioning Dhankhar ji's health, but still, we will not let go of these issues and will continue to raise questions... I wish for Jagdeep Dhankhar's good health," the Congress leader wrote. Rajya Sabha MP Vivek Tankha, on the other hand, questioned if Dhankhar's assertive handling of impeachment motions against Justices Yadav and Verma could have led to pressure from within the ruling establishment. "Vice President VP Dhankhar's resignation quite unexpected !! While presiding over Rajya Sabha yesterday he was his good jolly self !! Did the way he pro actively handle the 2 impeachment motions ( Justice Yadav & Verma ) yesterday the last straw," Tankha said in a separate X post. Congress MP Imraan Masood echoed disbelief, stating: 'He was in Parliament the entire day. What happened in just one hour that he had to resign?' In another scathing attack on the BJP, Gaurav Pandhi, Secretary of the AICC suggested Dhankhar's loyalty to the Prime Minister over the Constitution led to his downfall. 'He walked in like a Modi Megaphone and slipped out like he was on a WhatsApp chat. Just left the chat—or forced to?' he wrote. Wider Opposition: Disbelief, doubt, & defiance But Congress is not alone in voicing its shock over the VP's decision to exit mid-term. Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi pushed back against portrayals of Dhankhar as impartial. 'Let's not forget that the Opposition had to move a no-confidence motion against the Chair for his partisan conduct,' she reminded. — priyankac19 (@priyankac19) Additionally, JMM MP Mahua Maji called the resignation 'shocking,' stating that Dhankhar had shown no signs of stepping down and had delivered a full day of proceedings. "This is very shocking news, especially for the opposition parties... Today in the House, we didn't feel that he was going to resign today itself... He also said many other important things... Some people are unable to digest this matter. There are speculations that there may be another reason behind it... We all want him to reconsider this decision," Majhi said. Mixed emotions: Well-wishes & wariness While criticism of the circumstances surrounding Dhankhar's resignation dominated the Opposition's responses, many leaders also conveyed good wishes for his health. Congress veteran P. Chidambaram joined others in expressing hope for Dhankhar's full recovery. Samajwadi Party MP Javed Ali Khan also took a less offensive stance and said, 'Virtue! Even if a resignation is taken, it is only said to have been given. By the way, I wish for the complete recovery of Mr. Dhankhar.' A day of sudden developments Jairam Ramesh, in his second post on the matter, outlined the timeline of the day that ended with the unprecedented move. He wrote that on July 21, just hours before his resignation, Dhankhar chaired two meetings of the Rajya Sabha's Business Advisory Committee (BAC). The first, at 12:30 PM, included top leaders such as Leader of the House JP Nadda and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju. A follow-up meeting scheduled for 4:30 PM, however, saw both senior ministers absent—reportedly without informing the Vice President. Economic Times WhatsApp channel )
