And that's not even mentioning the slew of star-studded series that debuted this year: 'The Pitt,' 'Paradise,' 'The Studio,' 'Dying for Sex,' and IndieWire Honors-recognized 'Adolescence' all have become critically acclaimed hits.
From Liza Colón-Zayas ('The Bear') to 'The White Lotus' trio of Parker Posey, Leslie Bibb, and Carrie Coon, to 'The Studio' stars Catherine O'Hara and Kathryn Hahn, the comedy categories for actresses are particularly competitive this year. Don't forget about Emmy staples 'Hacks' and 'Abbott Elementary' too.
The Outstanding Television Movie category additionally has an interesting year, with Emmy-winning 'Succession' creator Jesse Armstrong's HBO film 'Mountainhead' against the fourth 'Bridget Jones' film, 'Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy,' which premiered solely on Peacock in the United States while becoming a box office hit in theaters abroad.
Emmys voting wrapped on Monday, June 23, with the nominations announced today, Tuesday, July 15, by 'Running Point' breakout Brenda Song (which debuted in 2025 on Netflix) and 'What We Do in the Shadows' star Harvey Guillén (the FX series just had its final season).
The 76th Annual Emmy Awards will honor series that aired between June 1, 2024 and May 31, 2025. The 77th annual Primetime Emmy Awards are set to take place on Sunday, September 14, live on CBS at 8:00 p.m. ET/ 5:00 p.m. PT. Nate Bargatze will be hosting the awards show.

Trailer Arrives For New Documentary, ‘It's Never Over, Jeff Buckley'

With under a month to go until its official release, the trailer for the long-awaited documentary, It's Never Over, Jeff Buckley, has arrived. Directed by Amy Berg, the feature unravels the story of the mesmerizing musician whose life and career were tragically cut short at the age of 30 when he accidentally drowned in Memphis' Wolf River in 1997. More from Billboard Tomorrowland 2025 Mainstage Destroyed by Fire Ahead of Festival Alison Krauss & Union Station, Billy Strings Lead 2025 IBMA Bluegrass Music Awards Nominees Ariana Grande Teases 'A Plan to Sing for You All Next Year': See What She Said First premiering at Sundance in January, the film will be released theatrically by Magnolia Pictures on Aug. 8 and then premiere on HBO and stream on HBO Max this winter as part of Bill Simmons' Music Box series. Ahead of its release, the documentary's official trailer has now arrived, with haunting comments from Buckley pairing with intimate archival footage. 'How would you like your fans to think of you,' an interviewer can be heard asking Buckley. 'Just the music,' he replies. 'Because when I'm dead, that's the only thing that'll be around.' The documentary features never-before-seen footage from Buckley's archives, and is complemented by intimate accounts from those close to the late musician, including his mother Mary Guibert, former partners Rebecca Moore and Joan Wasser, and former bandmates Michael Tighe and Parker Kindred. Other musician luminaries, such as Aimee Mann and Ben Harper also share their insight into Buckley's life and legacy. 'It's difficult to imagine a time when I wasn't attempting to make the Jeff Buckley doc,' Berg explained in a statement. 'It's been on my bucket list since I made my first film in 2006. And maybe, since I first heard Grace in 1994. It changed my life forever. It literally became the 'tear that hangs inside my soul forever.'' Numerous attempts to immortalize Buckley's story have taken place over the years, including one by actor Brad Pitt, who befriended Guibert in 2000 and floated the idea of a biopic. In 2021, Guibert was announced as the co-producer of Everybody Here Wants You, a planned biopic which would see Reeve Carney portraying Buckley, though no updates on that project had been provided since. Buckley was the son of Guibert and late folk musician Tim Buckley and after gaining notice as a session musician and captivating performer in Manhattan's East Village he signed to Columbia in 1994 and released his debut LP, Grace. It initially got mixed reviews and only reached No. 149 on the Billboard 200 album chart, but the album is now considered a classic, one that Buckley would never follow up. Though he never completed a second album, Guibert helped compile some of her son's demos for 1998's Sketches for My Sweetheart the Drunk, which reached No. 64 on the Billboard 200 and received a Grammy nomination for best male rock vocal performance for the single 'Everybody Here Wants You.' Barack Obama could win his fifth Emmy — but would that make him the most-awarded ex-president?

Former President Barack Obama won the presidency twice, but the 22nd Amendment prevented him from going for the hat trick. The same rules don't apply to the Emmy race, where the 42nd commander in chief is closing in on his third individual Primetime Emmy. Obama's name was included among the Best Narrator nominees when nominations were announced on Tuesday for lending his voice to the Netflix docuseries Our Oceans, made in collaboration with Higher Ground, the production company run by the former POTUS and his FLOTUS, Michelle Obama. Obama is no stranger to this particular category having been nominated — and won — twice before. He received his first Best Narrator statuette in 2022 for narrating the Netflix-Higher Ground collab Our Great National Parks, and repeated the following year for another joint effort, Working: What We Do All Day. He and Michelle also won two Daytime Emmys in 2022 for producing animated children's shows. The president-turned-producer notably hasn't accepted these awards in-person, though: he's remained a no-show at both the Primetime Emmys and the Creative Arts Emmys. More from Gold Derby 'Squid Game' and Diego Luna are the year's biggest Emmy snubs: Poll Snubbed by Oscars, redeemed by Emmys: How eligibility rules revived 'Super/Man,' 'I Am: Celine Dion,' and 'Will & Harper' This year, one of America's most popular former presidents is going toe-to-toe with America's Dad. Tom Hanks looks to be Obama's primary competition as the narrator of NBC's wildlife docuseries The Americas. Other names in the mix include nature doc icon David Attenborough for BBC America's Planet Earth: Asia), Idris Elba for National Geographic's Erased: WW2's Heroes of Color, and Phoebe Waller-Bridge for Prime Video's Octopus! While Obama can boast to having the most Emmys of any ex-president, he's not the only former Oval Office occupant to have received major entertainment industry awards. Here's a rundown on all the presidents who have received Hollywood recognition. Dwight D. Eisenhower (1953-1961) The Emmys liked Ike. Eisenhower received the ceremony's first-ever Governors Award in 1956 as a tribute to the 34th president's embrace of television as a communication medium. Jimmy Carter (1977-1981) Obama is the president to beat the Emmys, but Carter has the Grammys on lock. The 39th president — who died in December 2024 at age 100 — scored 10 nominations over the course of his post-Oval Office life and notched four wins, most recently receiving a posthumous Grammy in February. All of Carter's statuettes were for Best Spoken Word Album — now called Best Audio Book, Narration, and Storytelling Recording — for the audio versions of his many books. He received his first Grammy in 2007 for Our Endangered Values: America's Moral Crisis (he tied with the memoir Ossie and Ruby by Ossie Davis and Ruby Dee), followed by 2016's A Full Life: Reflections at Ninety, 2019's Faith: A Journey for All and 2025's Last Sundays in Plains: A Centennial Celebration. Ronald Reagan (1981-1989) Years before he left Hollywood for politics, the 40th president was honored by the still-young Golden Globes with the 1957 Hollywood Citizenship Award. It was the second and final year that the organization handed out that particular prize, which recognized recipients' achievements in citizenship. Reagan is also one of two presidents with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Bill Clinton (1993-2001) The 42nd president joins Carter as a Grammy winner with four nominations and two victories. Clinton received his first statuette in 2004 for Best Spoken Word Album For Children as part of the ensemble featured on the album Prokofiev: Peter and the Wolf/Beintus: Wolf Tracks. One year later, he scored a solo Grammy in the Best Spoken Word Album category for narrating his autobiography, My Life. Meanwhile, his wife and former presidential candidate, Hillary Rodham Clinton, won her own spoken word Grammy in 1997 for the audiobook version of It Takes a Village. Barack Obama (2009-2017) Besides his aforementioned Emmy run for Best Narrator, Obama has been featured in three Emmy-winning productions, including a 2014 episode of Between Two Ferns with Zach Galifianakis, but wasn't personally in contention in those cases. The Higher Ground-backed documentary American Factory also received a directing Emmy in 2020. The Obamas' production company also has several Daytime Emmys to its name courtesy of its animated children's fare: in 2022, We the People and Ada Twist, Scientist won Outstanding Short Form Program and Outstanding Preschool Animated Series, respectively. Beyond the Emmys, Obama is also a Grammy recipient. He's received three Best Spoken Word Album nominations to date and has two wins: one in 2006 for his acclaimed memoir Dreams of My Father and the other in 2008 for The Audacity of Hope, which he received in the middle of his historic campaign for the presidency. For the record, Michelle Obama is also a two-time winner: she won the spoken word category in 2020 for her memoir, Becoming, and again in 2024 for The Light We Carry. Donald Trump (2017-2021; 2025-present) The 45th and 47th president received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2007 when he was still hosting NBC's hit reality series The Apprentice. That show also received two Emmy nominations for Best Reality Competition Program in 2004 and 2005, but lost to The Amazing Race both years. Instant Emmy prediction data shows ‘The Studio' and ‘Severance' out to early leads, with ‘Hacks' and ‘The Pitt' lurking

A day after the 2025 Emmy nominations were announced, Gold Derby is unveiling our first snapshot of winner predictions in the 26 categories to be presented live on CBS on Sept. 14. A caveat: This data is based on initial polling of our experts, editors, and users; expect the races to vacillate and tighten as we collect more input and get closer to the ceremony. Comedy For the comedy genre, The Studio is expected to win three of the seven top races: Best Comedy Series, Best Comedy Actor (Seth Rogen), and Best Comedy Directing ("The Oner"). Apple TV+'s new show made Emmys history with 23 nominations, the most ever for a freshman outing. Rival series Hacks, which won the series race last year, is also out front in three categories: Best Comedy Actress (Jean Smart, who is so far undefeated), Best Comedy Supporting Actress (Hannah Einbinder, who has yet to win), and Best Comedy Writing ("A Slippery Slope"). Finally, Shrinking is poised to get on the board with a victory for Best Comedy Supporting Actor (Harrison Ford, who's celebrating his first-ever nomination).
