IIT Madras launches free STEM training for college faculty in India
It will focus on faculty development, covering fundamental and advanced topics in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Biology besides practical lab sessions and exposure to frontier
research.
Organised under Malaviya Mission Teacher Training Programme (MMTTP), this in-person, residential Capacity Building Program is provided free of cost for faculty engaged in teaching undergraduate and postgraduate science courses.
IIT Madras TLC has partnered with BodhBridge Education for this initiative, which is targeted towards college faculty across India.
The training will be conducted over a period of nine days, with each batch comprising 50 participants. Shortlisted candidates will be notified by email.
College faculty teaching Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Biotechnology (UG and PG) are eligible to apply, a release from IIT-Madras said.
The program would be held at TLC Hall and Central Library in the IIT Madras campus.
Prof. Edamana Prasad, Chairman, Teaching Learning Center, IIT Madras, said, 'The program is designed to elevate teaching effectiveness, enrich student learning experiences and cultivate an engaged and inspired academic environment. Its objectives include strengthening student performance, encouraging higher enrollment in STEM disciplines and advancing diversity and inclusion, all of which align with the Union Education Ministry's commitment to ongoing enhancement and innovation within India's education sector.
Faculty members from both public and private colleges are eligible to participate, and assessment and certification will be conducted under the guidance of the MMTTP framework.
The TLC at IIT Madras is dedicated to advancing teaching methodologies and building academic capacity among educators, thereby nurturing a culture of excellence and innovation in higher education.
The Capacity Building Programme will focus on holistic faculty development, covering fundamental and advanced topics in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Biology.
The modules will offer practical lab sessions, innovative teaching methodologies, and exposure to frontier research, designed to refresh pedagogical skills and support the development of modern, inquiry-based STEM curricula.
Staying true to the vision of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the program will focus on Interdisciplinary Approach, Skill Development, Research and Innovation, Global Competitiveness
and Experiential Learning
The training schedule -- Biotechnology (August 22 to 30), Chemistry:(October 7 to 17), Physics
Batch 1 (November 11 to 19), Physics Batch 2 (November 20 to 2) followed by Mathematics (December 15 to 24).

IIT Madras to offer mentorship, support to students admitted through FACE, ScOpE
The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) has admitted nine students to its BTech programmes through the Fine Arts and Culture Excellence (FACE) admissions scheme for the first time this year. Under the scheme, two seats per programme are allotted in all BTech and BS courses – one reserved for female candidates and the other gender-neutral. The objective of FACE admission is to reward and encourage students who have achieved excellence in fine arts and culture. Candidates who opted to be treated at par with Indian nationals during JEE Advanced 2025 registration were eligible for FACE admission and had to apply via the dedicated portal – Alongside FACE, the institute runs the 'Science Olympiad Excellence' (ScOpE) scheme and had earlier introduced the Sports Excellence Admission (SEA) from the 2024-25 academic year, becoming the first IIT to offer a dedicated pathway for sports persons. SEA requires students to qualify JEE Advanced, however, admissions are handled through a separate IIT Madras portal, instead of the JoSAA system. These admissions are offered through supernumerary seats, ensuring that the overall intake via JEE Advanced remains unchanged. Students admitted to IIT Madras through ScOPE, who are often academically inclined, receive guidance under the institute's regular faculty advisor scheme at the institute. For the newly joined FACE students this year, a mentorship structure similar to that for sports excellence admissions has been designed, focusing on nurturing their talents and encouraging participation in relevant programmes and competitions, the institute said. 'Support to nurture their talents will be enabled and they will be encouraged to participate in suitable programmes and competitions,' the was told. The initiatives have drawn positive responses from parents, with several appreciating the alternative routes to IIT Madras for students excelling in sports, fine arts, or Olympiads. As these schemes are only in their first and second year respectively, their wider impact is still taking shape.

CBSE to introduce 'Bharatiya Ganit Parampara' to document India's contributions to mathematics

This 150-175 page document will feature key discoveries, innovations, original Sanskrit verses, and applications in fields like astronomy and architecture. It aims to integrate India's knowledge traditions into the curriculum. The "authoritative monograph", is set to be about 150-175 pages and will mention key mathematical discoveries and innovations from ancient, medieval, and modern India, the officials stated. The proposal received a green signal in the recent governing body meeting of the board. "The National Education Policy emphasises the integration of India's knowledge traditions in the curriculum and the development of culturally rooted and globally relevant learning materials. CBSE proposes to develop an authoritative monograph highlighting India's contributions to the field of mathematics," a senior board official told PTI. "The monograph will be developed through an academic partner or agency selected through an open process, and will later be made available both digitally and in print for schools, students and teachers," the official said. According to the official, it will also explore the application of Indian mathematics in fields such as astronomy and architecture. Parl panel flags ANRF's limited focus; seeks parallel push for humanities research
A parliamentary panel, flagging the Anusandhan National Research Foundation's (ANRF) limited focus on science, technology, agriculture, and health, on Monday recommended the Centre to launch a parallel initiative to promote humanities and social sciences research in higher education and to allocate a portion of Higher Education Financing Agency (HEFA) funds specifically for research. The committee has criticised the ministry for ignoring its recommendations on tailored teacher training. (Representative file photo) Set up in 2023 in line with National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, ANRF promotes research, innovation and entrepreneurship across various fields of science, engineering, and technology. Launched in 2017, HEFA funds infrastructure and research in higher educational institutions through loans. Parliamentary standing committee on education, women, children, youth and sports in its report on review of the government's response to its September 2023 recommendations on NEP implementation in higher education, stressed that its call for research support was meant to be broad-based, covering humanities and social sciences, which it said are vital to social, cultural, and economic progress. 'However, it is concerned by the ANRF's limited focus on science, technology, agriculture, and health technology…Therefore, the committee recommends a parallel initiative to support humanities and social sciences research in higher education.' Also Read:Blueprint for becoming a global knowledge power While ministry in its action taken response stated that around 2500 HEIs and 300 universities have established Research and Development (R&D) cells at their campuses and 14,518 Institution's Innovation Council (IICs) have been set up in 28 states and 9 UTs, the panel asked the ministry to provide a report on the progress made in universal establishment of R&D cells in all HEIs. While the education ministry said HEFA funds support research facilities and provides grants to 2500 higher education institutions (HEIs) through Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), the panel reiterated its call to earmark a fixed share for research and innovation to ensure consistent funding. 'The ministry has unfortunately not acknowledged this recommendation in its response. The committee therefore, reiterates this recommendation,' the committee said in its latest report. The committee has criticised the ministry for ignoring its recommendations on tailored teacher training and incentives for those working in marginalised communities, as well as on research and innovation in this area. It reiterated that training materials should meet community-specific needs, incentives should be provided, and a dedicated centre be set up to conduct community-focused education research to guide policy, curriculum, and teacher training. The panel has called for 'synergized collaboration' between ministry and states for successful implementation of the NEP 2020. It also asked the ministry to develop a formal feedback mechanism for stakeholders on the Multi Entry and Multiple Exit (MEME) scheme and other NEP initiatives, and the creation of a central tracker to monitor the policy's implementation in higher education.
