Celtics Emerge As Dark-Horse Suitors In Potential Giannis Antetokounmpo Trade

Celtics Emerge As Dark-Horse Suitors In Potential Giannis Antetokounmpo Trade originally appeared on Fadeaway World.
The Boston Celtics may have just entered the most high-stakes sweepstakes of the NBA offseason. According to ESPN's Brian Windhorst, the Celtics are one of a few teams that could realistically pull off a trade for Milwaukee Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo and still remain championship contenders in the aftermath.

"I think you have to look at the teams that could make a trade for Giannis that the Bucks would accept and, on the other side of the trade, would have a contending team."
"So Boston would be on that list. I think New York would be on that list. You know, there's some difficulties when you talk about aprons and second apron teams trying to make trades, and that's a reality, but there are some teams in the Eastern Conference you could construct an ability to get this done."
This revelation comes amid a leaguewide swirl of speculation that Giannis may finally be ready to move on from Milwaukee. With the Bucks suffering yet another postseason letdown and internal uncertainty brewing under head coach Doc Rivers, NBA agents and insiders increasingly believe Antetokounmpo could request a trade this summer.
Rivers, for his part, refused to entertain the rumors. 'I talk to him all the time,' he said bluntly when asked about the speculation.

But NBA front offices aren't moving on. And Boston is now being whispered as a serious, albeit dark-horse, suitor.
The Celtics are at a financial crossroads themselves. With a massive luxury tax bill looming and second-apron penalties constricting roster flexibility, the front office is reportedly exploring a fire sale that would keep only the core of Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown, and Derrick White, while shopping supporting pieces like Kristaps Porzingis, Al Horford, and potentially even Jrue Holiday depending on their future plans.
Despite these tax concerns, Boston has the depth of assets and young talent that Milwaukee might covet in a trade. A package centered around multiple rotation players, future first-round picks, and financial relief could tempt the Bucks if Giannis forces their hand.
From a basketball perspective, Giannis paired with Tatum would instantly form the most athletic and versatile forward duo in the NBA, when the Celtics star returns in 2026.

Tatum's perimeter scoring and playmaking would complement Giannis' slashing dominance and defensive prowess.
The question, of course, is whether Boston would be willing to part ways with Jaylen Brown in such a deal. While some analysts believe Boston would prefer to pair Giannis with Brown and Tatum, it's more likely that Brown, along with key depth pieces, would be required to get Milwaukee's attention.
The Celtics aren't the only team circling Giannis.
The Knicks have the draft capital and the depth to go big. A potential offer could center around stars and three or more first-round picks (including ones from Dallas, Milwaukee, or Washington)

A blockbuster out West could see the Warriors offer Jonathan Kuminga, Moses Moody, Andrew Wiggins, and multiple future unprotected picks, including their 2026 and 2028 firsts. If Milwaukee sees long-term value in Kuminga's potential and wants to reset the timeline while remaining competitive, Golden State might be a compelling option.
The Raptors have long been seen as a stealth candidate for a star trade, especially after pulling off the Kawhi Leonard heist in 2018. Their offer could include Scottie Barnes, Bruce Brown, Chris Boucher, and a war chest of picks.
Though more speculative, the most explosive rumor involves a potential Luka Doncic for Giannis swap between the Lakers and Bucks.
Each team brings a unique pitch: Boston offers contention and All-NBA talent, New York brings market and draft capital, Golden State adds dynasty appeal, Toronto offers a superstar prospect, and LA comes with the glamour and blockbuster potential.

Ultimately, Giannis controls much of this saga. If he asks out, Boston's combination of star power, win-now ability, and tradable assets could give them the inside track, even in a race stacked with suitors.

After Closing Out World Series, Walker Buehler Struggles At Yankee Stadium With Red Sox

Before Friday, Walker Buehler's previous appearance at Yankee Stadium was a pair of massive contributions for the Los Angeles Dodgers, resulting in the visiting clubhouse turning into a massive celebration and a place of cursing and drinking ahead of a celebration spilling onto the field until about 3 am. Buehler's five scoreless innings of two-hit ball in Game 3 and his two strikeouts in a 16-pitch save two nights later resulted in the massive dogpile on the field and also was his last pitch as a Dodgers for the time being. About eight months later, Buehler was on the mound this time in the context of the Red Sox-Yankees rivalry. He was part of an aggressive offseason for the Red Sox, who signed him to a one-year, $21 million contract after a notable postseason following recovery from Tommy John surgery on his elbow. And the feelings were nowhere near as joyful when he secured the Dodgers' first full season World Series title since 1988. The Yankees looked much better against him, tagging him for five runs in the first inning after he was one strike away and two more in the second, sending him into the night following his shortest outing since joining the Red Sox on the 'prove-it' deal. About two-plus hours after his final pitch, Buehler showed some massive frustration, unleashing a few expletives along the way. The summary on the transcription service most people use nowadays says the 'subject is frustrated with his performance' and it is putting it diplomatically. 'This organization put a lot of faith in me this offseason and I've been (expletive) embarrassing for us,' Buehler said. 'So, it's tough. It's obviously a big game and a big rivalry that I was excited to be a part of and for it to go the way that it did is super disappointing, especially after the past two, three weeks of prep and throwing and all that kind of (expletive) and how I'm feeling. Physically I feel great and for it to happen that way (stinks)' Buehler is operating with a different pitch mix nowadays, throwing his four-seam fastball 24 percent of the time at 93.8 mph, down from the 28.9 percent at 95 last season. He also is throwing his slider 84 percent of the time after throwing 11 sliders last season. In his first taste of the rivalry that will get the FOX and ESPN treatment the rest of the weekend, Buehler deployed his slider 29 times and gave up a three-run homer on the curveball to Jazz Chisholm Jr. after getting ahead 0-2. 'I don't want to dig too deep into it. Obviously, I'm throwing a lot of sliders. I'm throwing a lot of (the) two-seamer,' he said. 'Those traditionally haven't been what I do very often. And I think when the sweeper is never in the zone like it hasn't been, the curveball's gonna get hit more than it has, the cutter's gonna get hit more than it has.' .While physically Buehler is fine after a brief injured list stint due to shoulder bursitis, the results are not and continuing an alarming trend of struggling in the first inning and getting sub-par results from starting pitchers when Garrett Crochet is not pitching. Opponents are hitting .326 in the first inning against the Red Sox this season and 21-for-41 in the past seven opening innings since Brayan Bello pitched a 1-2-3 first inning May 28 at Milwaukee. 'He feels great physically, he feels his stuff is really good, and then that happened, you know?" Red Sox manager Alex Cora said. "So it's not easy to be out there and get your ass kicked, right? I think we're all frustrated, you know, and he's trying to find a way.' Those were Cora's words about 5 1/2 hours after he answered a question to assess the state of his team so far. When asked about it, he quietly and succinctly said 'not good'. Not good is a vastly different feeling than what Buehler felt like in the wee hours of Halloween when he celebrated with the likes of Shohei Ohtani, Freddie Freeman and Mookie Betts.

Blockbuster 3-Team NBA Trade Idea Sends Celtics' Jrue Holiday to Mavericks

Blockbuster 3-Team NBA Trade Idea Sends Celtics' Jrue Holiday to Mavericks originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Dallas Mavericks need to acquire a point guard this offseason since Kyrie Irving will miss a chunk of next season recovering from his left ACL tear. Advertisement With that said, Eric Pincus of Bleacher Report proposed a three-team trade idea between the Mavericks, Celtics and Brooklyn Nets that sends Jrue Holiday from Boston to Dallas. According to Marc Stein of The Stein Line, the Mavericks are interested in acquiring Holiday, who will make $32.4 million next season. The Celtics may break up their core this offseason since they will have the most expensive roster in the NBA next season and Jayson Tatum may not play at all in 2025-26 due to his right Achilles tendon tear. Boston Celtics guard Jrue Holiday© Stephen Lew-Imagn Images A two-time NBA champion, Holiday averaged 11.1 points, 4.3 rebounds and 3.9 assists in the 2024-25 regular season and 10.3 points, 4.1 rebounds and 4.1 assists in the 2025 playoffs in seven games against the Orlando Magic and New York Knicks. Advertisement "Holiday is a capable starting point guard," Pincus wrote. "He's not as dynamic as Irving offensively, but he is among the best defenders of his generation. Holiday is also one of the most respected people in the league (winning both the NBA's sportsman and teammate of the year awards this season)." Holiday and Mavericks big man Anthony Davis were teammates on the New Orleans Pelicans. The two All-Stars appeared in 310 games together. Holiday has played for the Philadelphia 76ers, Pelicans, Milwaukee Bucks and Celtics. The UCLA product has career averages of 15.8 points, 4.2 rebounds and 6.2 assists. The Mavericks missed the playoffs this year after making the NBA Finals last year. They shockingly traded Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers in February.
