South Africa gets closer to full membership of Afreximbank
Membership of Afreximbank, as the lender with a balance sheet of $35bn (R620.80bn) is known, would give Africa's South Africa access to new trade investment products when its tariff row with the US has increased its need for new export markets.
Afreximbank has, however, in recent months been in a dispute about whether its loans to African nations should be restructured in the event of defaults.
The government said it would get a class A shareholding, meaning it would have an increased role in Afreximbank's governance.
That would include 'influence over its strategic direction, structure and leadership appointments', it said.

The SA Poultry Association (Sapa) said it notes with concern the media release issued by Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition Parks Tau on July 292025, titled 'Minister Tau reaffirms South Africa's commitment to a conclusion on the US trade deal.' It said in the statement, Minister Tau refers to:'Agricultural Market Access by simplifying of US poultry exports under the 2016 tariff rate quota and unlock approximately $91 million in trade. In addition, readiness to open market access for blueberries subject to necessary protocols.' The Department of Trade, Industry and Competition on Tuesday said negotiations remained the best tool to deal with the issues that are on the table. Tau said the government remained committed to the cause as it awaited substantive feedback from the US counterparts on the final status on its Framework deal. 'The intersection of geopolitical, domestic and trade issues best defines the current impasse between South Africa and the United States, and a reset is unavoidable,' Tau said. Next Stay Close ✕ Sapa said the reference to poultry exports by Tau is vague and leaves the industry with no clear understanding of what was agreed during the reported negotiations with the United States. "Despite the significant impact of poultry trade policy on local producers, no consultation with the industry has taken place," it said, adding that the poultry industry previously met with Tau on May 16, 2025, during which it was expressly requested that the Minister engages with the industry before making any trade commitments. It was also requested that the Minister gives instruction to treasury to implement the AGOA agreement and revoke the US import quota for poultry meat — previously 65 000 tonnes and now increased to 72 000 tonnes — which allows imports to enter South Africa free of anti-dumping duties. Sapa said to date, the industry has received no response to any of its formal requests submitted for engagement. "While South African exporters continue to suffer from limited to no access to the US market, the import quota favouring US exporters for poultry remains in place, delivering one-sided benefits with no clear industry is left in the dark regarding the content and implications of the reported trade agreement," it said. Considering these developments, the poultry industry said it demands immediate clarification from Minister Tau on the content and commitments reflected in the July 29 media release. It also calls for the urgent revocation of the US poultry import quota, which undermines local producers and is no longer justifiable in the absence of fair-trade terms. "The industry reiterates its readiness to engage constructively with the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition, and calls on the Minister to uphold the principles of transparency and consultation in all trade negotiations that materially affect local sectors," Sapa said. Izaak Breitenbach, CEO of the South African Poultry Association, previously told Business Report that US authorities have yet to communicate the path forward for Agoa. 'We assume that this tariff announcement will be the end of Agoa, which will be bad for the country,' Breitenbach said. BUSINESS REPORT

MK national chairperson Shivambu has since been involved in what he calls a national consultative process to launch his political party, called Mayibuye iAfrica. On Friday, Mayibuye iAfrika announced Mkhize as its new head of presidency. Asked whether the MK party was aware that Mkhize had joined Shivambu, Nhleko said she was free to join whoever she wanted. In a briefing two months ago, after his axing, Shivambu told journalists that R7 million had been stolen from the MK party, but did not say by whom. At Friday's briefing, MK treasurer general Mpiyakhe Limba countered that Shivambu should have admitted that he had left the party with a R28 million debt. Limba added that the party had appointed a consulting company of qualified chartered accountants and auditors for an independent overview of its finances. 'The purpose of auditing is for continuous improvement so that we have a proper system in place,' Limba said. 'We do have findings which are more focused on our bookkeeping, rather than to say there's any form of corruption.'

SAHRC probes ‘Open Chats Podcast' despite apology
The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) has launched an investigation into derogatory remarks made by the hosts of the Open Chats Podcast against the coloured community. The popular podcast came under fire this week, sparking outrage and calls for its removal. Political parties, including the ANC, DA, PA and EFF, have condemned the behaviour and reported the matter to the commission. Despite the hosts apologising and the clip being removed from the episode, the commission said it would proceed with its investigation. 'The commission, through its Gauteng provincial office, has opened an own accord investigation and will continue with its investigative process,' the SAHRC said. 'The commission also confirms receipt of several complaints from political parties and individuals against the Open Chats podcast for the pain endured by the coloured community and other vulnerable communities as a result of offensive remarks on the episode.' The SAHRC said it has sent allegation letters to the respondents and would determine the way forward. The commission urged the public to use the media responsibly, emphasising the right to freedom of expression is not absolute and hate speech is prohibited. 'Podcasts are not exempted from the limitations. Podcast owners, hosts and guests are subject to the constitution and all applicable laws.' The commission said it would make a submission to the draft white paper on audio and audiovisual media services and online safety released by the communications and digital technologies department. 'Recent online attacks against the coloured community and other vulnerable communities again underscore the urgent need for stronger digital regulations to protect dignity, equality and human rights in the digital age. 'The commission also advises that any individual complainant seeking criminal sanction may lodge a crimen injuria complaint with the police.' TimesLIVE
