Planning Ed Sheeran's surprise gig was like MI6 secret mission – but it was still worst kept secret, says pub boss

THE landlord of a Wexford pub where superstar Ed Sheeran performed a surprise show has said it was planned like an MI6 operation.
Bar owner Caolan Barron revealed he had no idea who would be plugging in his boozer, the Sky & The Ground pub on Wexford's South Main Street, when he was first contacted by organisers of the Fleadh Cheoil na hEireann.

Caolan said: 'We were approached in some way a couple of weeks ago to potentially hold an event but we really didn't know what it was and it was all very vague.
'We didn't know what or who. It was very secretive and very hush, hush but we got on quite well with them'.
It was only last week, the publican learned his historic boozer was to play host to a set from superstar Ed Sheeran.
He said: 'I'd say about four days ago I learned it was Ed Sheeran . I then found myself thrown into organising this massive thing. It's been MI6 level of preparations.

'The WhatsApp group I was in was insane with top level Gardai, event management, the people for the Fleadh and Ed Sheeran's security detail. The last thing we wanted was 20,000 people turning up on our doorstep'.
The secret WhatsApp group continued right up to the moment Ed appeared in their bar.
He said: 'We were getting minute by minute updates like 'currently on the M50, this is our estimated time of arrival'.
'In fairness, everyone put their heads together and made sure we were pretty well prepared when he arrived.

'Although no one in our family breathed a word, it was the worst kept secret in town. In fairness I think we benefited from multiple rumours of different bands playing'.
The Shape of You star ended up spending three hours in the Wexford pub, recording a podcast in an upstairs room with the 2 Johnnies and doing other chats with radio stations before coming down to perform in the pub.

Hitmaker Ed jammed along with local acts Amble, BIIRD, and Beoga during the session but he also made sure fans who couldn't get make inside the pub didn't miss out, making his way outside to perform an acoustic rendition of his hit single Perfect.
Caolan stressed the musician seemed at home in the town.

He told RTE: 'Ed's father is from Wexford and was born here and Ed spent most of his summers in Wexford, he looks like one of us'.
Speaking to Dave Moore on Today FM yesterday, Ed chatted about his connections to Ireland and his most famous celtic theme tune, Galway Girl: 'I've never actually been to this part of Wexford, I've only ever been to Gorey and I've never been to one before (Fleadh Cheoil Na hÉireann), even as a child.
TRAD MUSIC
'I think if you've got family that's Irish and you're brought up with that as your culture, who is someone else to tell you what you grew up with.
'And this is the argument I have with people sometimes. Galway Girl is seen in trad head circles as the Anti-Christ but I know that it's been a gateway drug for a lot of kids to pick up instruments and learning trad and discovering new and old trad.

'So I think it's a double edged sword. Sometimes I think you need stuff like that and people are always going to have opinions.'
Ed indulged his love of Ireland with a string of covers during his Wexford set including Raglan Road and The Parting Glass, and his own song Nancy Mulligan penned about his Irish grandmother who passed away in 2023.

Ed Sheeran takes brutal swipe at mystery ex friend in quirky music video alongside Rupert Grint

Ed's new video came out last night and is a sequel to 2011's Lego House in which Rupert played an obsessive fan ED SHEERAN wears a wedding dress and fools around opposite Rupert Grint in his hilarious new video for his song A Little More. But if you listen to the words, you might be surprised to hear Ed laying into a former pal in the most brutal lyrics of his career. 10 Ed Sheeran wears a wedding dress and fools around opposite Rupert Grint in his hilarious new video for his song A Little More Credit: Mark Surridge 10 Fans will be trying to connect the dots to work out who the subject of this savage song is Credit: Mark Surridge 10 Harry Potter actor Rupert also features in Ed's new video Credit: Getty The video came out last night and is a sequel to 2011's Lego House in which Harry Potter actor Rupert played an obsessive fan. This time he comes out of jail and sees Ed everywhere he goes – with his bride, played by Game Of Thrones star Nathalie Emmanuel, even morphing into the singer. However, in the striking track, which is the best so far from his upcoming album Play, he sings: 'You think I was born to ruin your life, but you did most of that before I arrived.' In the chorus, he continues: 'I used to love you, now every day I hate you just a little more. "Life got better when I lost you. But every day I hate you just a little more and more and more. "Blame it on your history and say it's not your fault. I can't call you crazy 'cause you could be diagnosed.' And in another dig in the second verse, he sings: 'I wish that you would look in the mirror 'cause, if you did, you'd see the problem is you, 'cause you're a p***k.' I have my theories on who it could be about, although I'll keep schtum for now. But I'm sure plenty of fans will be trying to connect the dots to work out who the subject of this savage song is. Fairy good, Roan 10 Chappell Roan dazzled with fairy vibes in a custom green bodysuit decorated with wings while headlining Oya Festival in Norway Credit: Supplied She's got the magic touch with her tunes and Chappell Roan looked equally fantastical in this outfit. Ed Sheeran plays secret set in Wexford pub The US singer had fairy vibes in a custom green bodysuit decorated with wings as she headlined Oya Festival in Norway on Wednesday. She is fighting for No1 in the charts today with her new single The Subway, which was in the lead earlier in the week. Everyone I know who's seen her this summer says she's on top form. And us Brits will have the chance to see for ourselves when she headlines Reading and Leeds Festival in a fortnight. Her fabulous costumes almost make up for the fact she says we'll have to wait five years for her next album. Selena Gomez has the Jonas Brothers to thank for her friendship with Taylor Swift. She said: 'I dated Nick and she dated Joe. It was cute. I was about 15, she was about 18 and that's when it was the crazy curly Taylor, and she had all these bracelets … it was really sweet.' Selena told the Therapuss podcast she and Taylor 'like to say the best things [they] got out of those relationships was each other.' They each split up in 2008 but 'became best friends [and] bonded over the break-up, as girls do.' Hitched Charli so XCXited 10 Charli XCX stunned in rubbery yellow bra top and pants with knee-length black boots to headline Sziget Festival in Budapest on Wednesday Credit: Getty Charli XCX was in a cheery mood – and outfit – as she performed her first show since becoming a married woman. She wore a rubbery yellow bra top and pants with knee-length black boots to headline Sziget Festival in Budapest on Wednesday. And she is clearly still on cloud nine because she shouted about her nuptials to the 1975's George Daniel while performing her track Everything Is Romantic, which was written about him. She told the crowd: 'I'm so f*ing in love 'cause I just got married, b**!' Charli, who has five nods for next month's MTV VMAs this week, is now booked and busy, as she was back on stage in Norway last night (Thurs) ahead of a gig in Sweden tonight (Fri). The Guess singer will soon be jetting off for a second wedding celebration in Sicily though, so I'm sure all these gigs will help cover what is bound to be an eye-watering bar tab. It's Cyrus with Liz and Billy 10 Billy Ray Cyrus with girlfriend Liz Hurley Credit: Splash Billy Ray Cyrus is so inspired by girlfriend Liz Hurley, he's been making sweet music all about her. The US singer has been working on new tunes in the studio in West London, while visiting the UK to see actress Liz this week. Achy Breaky Heart star Billy, who revealed at Easter that he is romancing Liz, has been at Eastcote Studios where Arctic Monkeys, Kaiser Chiefs and Tom Jones have all recorded. His last album, in 2019, failed to chart on either side of the Atlantic, but dating Liz may win him more fans. He was by her side this week for the press launch of her new Channel 4 reality show The Inheritance. I'll bet that she pops up on his next record. Kelly: My gigs off for now 10 Kelly Clarkson cancelled the rest of her Las Vegas residency, postponing shows to next year due to her ex-husband's serious illness Credit: Getty Kelly Clarkson has cancelled the remaining dates of her Las Vegas residency and rearranged them for next year. The Stronger singer has angered many fans with the move, but insisted it was vital as her ex-husband, the dad of her kids, is seriously ill. Kelly, who had two kids with music manager Brandon Blackstock and was married to him from 2013 to 2022, issued this statement: 'While I normally keep my personal life private, this past year, my children's father has been ill and at this moment, I need to be fully present for them. I am sincerely sorry to everyone who bought tickets to the shows and I so appreciate your grace, kindness and understanding.' Healy lads are head over heels 10 Matt Healy of The 1975 is making plans to marry US model Gabbriette Bechtel, while his brother Louis has also started a new romance Credit: PA 10 Louis is said to be dating rising star Edie Wright, who features with him in West End show Stranger Things: The First Shadow Credit: Rex Features Love is in the air for Matt Healy – and his brother too. The 1975 frontman Matt is preparing to marry US model Gabbriette Bechtel later this year – and now his younger sibling, actor Louis, has struck up a romance of his own. I'm told he is dating rising star Edie Wright, who features with him in West End show Stranger Things: The First Shadow. A pal told me: 'There's real chemistry between Louis and Edie. Louis doesn't stop smiling when Edie is around. Louis' actor parents Tim Healy and Denise Welch are also fans of Edie and she gets on like a house on fire with Matt and Gabbriette.' In the hit show now playing at the Phoenix Theatre, Louis takes on the role of troubled teen Henry Creel who later becomes villainous Vecna and is played in the Netflix show by Jamie Campbell Bower. Edie portrays Karen Childress, a high-school student, and is also understudy for the role of Joyce Byers, played by Winona Ryder in the hit telly series. It might still be early days for Louis and Edie, but if I was Denise I might consider buying another hat in the near future. They do say weddings breed weddings. Pop start had Tyla in tears Tyla has told how she secretly sobbed in the early years of her career, over being pressured into making bubblegum pop. The Water singer recalled: '[Those songs] didn't feel like me at all. I remember being in my hotel room and my managers were calling me: 'Come down, we need to cut the song.' I was crying and thinking, 'This is not what I want. I didn't get signed to do this.'' Tyla, who released her brilliant WWP EP earlier this month, told Variety: 'They had to [coax] me out of that room. But through doing that, I realised how much more I love African music. It made me more persistent in keeping my ideas.' Jojo has grasp of the rasp 10 JoJo Siwa has tried her hand at rapping in explosive track Raspy, which sees her reference a number of her viral moments Credit: Supplied JOJO SIWA has used her new song Raspy to hit back at her haters. The former child star tries her hand at rapping in the explosive track, which sees her reference a number of her viral moments. The internet can be a cruel place at times but luckily JoJo appears to have taken it all in her stride. On the track, she raps: 'Say what, go ahead, try to insult me, I'm so game. All Press is good Press. Hey JoJo, you're a mess.' Prior to dropping Raspy, the Celebrity Big Brother star released a cover of Bette Davis Eyes by Kim Carnes. The song topped the UK iTunes pop chart, but divided fans due to JoJo's 'raspy' vocals. She said: 'Everyone is different, and every voice is different. Mine is just a little extra raspy. "Loads of people have asked me how much I smoke to get my voice like this, but the truth is, I've never smoked a cigarette in my life. The rasp is all natural, baby'. Backlash or not, JoJo is having the last laugh as she will kick off a UK-wide tour in October. Raspy is JoLo's third track of the year, following Bette Davis Eyes and Bulletproof. Revealing she has big plans for her music for the rest of 2025, JoJo said: 'There's gonna be a lot of new music this year. I've honestly had a lot of personal frustration over these last three years. I've had to wait and have patience. 'I'm in a place in life where I'm like, 'Let's go! I want to put out music, I want to keep going.''

On The Record — some of the new releases in Ireland this month

IF THERE is any band more pivotal in the development of Celtic rock than Horslips, then history has yet to discover them. Legacy being what it is, the past few years have witnessed many of the band's recordings repackaged (notably, 2022's mammoth, appropriately titled 35-disc set, More Than You Can Chew), but At the BBC (Madfish) takes a nice detour with four CDs and one DVD that unearth the band's time spent in the hallowed halls of the BBC. While the DVD highlights the musicians' esoteric choice of clothing as worn on the BBC's music show, Old Grey Whistle Test (in fairness, it was the early-mid'70s), the music once again marks them out as, perhaps, unwitting pioneers, but pioneers, nonetheless. From the riffs of Dearg Doom to the orchestral remake of The Book of Invasions, we doff the proverbial cap to them. SIMILARLY, we look admiringly towards Ólafar Arnalds & Talos and their collaborative album, A Dawning (Opia Community and Mercury KX). There is, however, a sting in the tale, in that Reykjavik-based musician Arnalds had to complete the album when Clonakilty's Eoin French (who, under the stage name Talos, had released three albums of fastidiously constructed dreamy, ambient music) died in 2024 at the age of 36. A significant portion of the album was written and recorded in West Cork before French was diagnosed with cancer, so there's little or nothing to read into the mostly melancholic vibe that weaves its way throughout. That said, if the listener doesn't shed a tear or three at some point (particularly during the closing track, We Didn't Know We Were Ready), then we don't know what to think. GRIEF also gets a look-in on the Various Artists album, My Grief on the Sea (Bring Your Own Hammer/BYOH), but not often in a way you might think – despair could be a better description. There's an intriguing concept to the record and the record label; the label aims to bring together Irish songwriters and historians to produce new song cycles that are rooted in the history of 19th-century Ireland and the Irish diaspora. The album is the first in a projected series of collaborations, with the inaugural compilation based on songs about the sea, sea passages, and migration to and from Ireland during the 1800s. From concept to outcome, it's not only worthwhile but often inspiring. The Irish singers and songwriters are what you might term niche (they include Arian Crowley, Linda Buckley, Cathal Coughlan, Mike Smalle, Eileen Gogan, Carol Keogh, Brigid Mae Power, and second-generation Irish musician, Michael J. Sheehy), but there isn't one song here that wouldn't sound out of place on daytime radio. THERE is little you could call niche on the debut album by Magherafelt singer-songwriter, JC Stewart. Arriving eleven years after the release of his debut single (Gold), the measure of what we hear on Space Hurts (Stanley Park Records) is the kind of material that could go stratospheric. Not that he isn't almost there: to date, Stewart's songs have amassed over 200 million plays on Spotify (this doesn't include co-writes with superstar songwriters Lewis Capaldi and Niall Horan). Space Hurts, meanwhile, is crammed with songs that can't be anything other than major hits – not just on old-fashioned radio stations but also on any streaming platform you care to mention. The downside? The songs are, inevitably, a tad over familiar, but the collective melody lines are so forceful you have no choice but to hum along to them. SOME songwriters don't have their careers mapped out for them in the way others do. Rostrevor's Matt Benson is a case in point. A career session musician, Benson's touring gig as the band trombonist and backing vocalist with UK singer George Ezra provided enough spare cash to make reality something he had been meaning to do for many years: record a debut album. Sit Back Down Again (Self-Released/Matthew Benson) is the result, and it's a fine record highlighting what can occur when life hands you a helping hand. The vibe throughout is mature: think John Martyn, Van Morrison, Randy Newman, Little Feat, The Band, and a few others, but mostly the vibe is Benson's own. Well worth your time and attention? Yep.
