PNB named top Malaysian sovereign investor, 17th globally in global SWF rankings

KUALA LUMPUR: Permodalan Nasional Bhd (PNB) has been recognised as the top Malaysian sovereign investor and ranked 17th globally in the 2025 GSR (Governance, Sustainability, and Resilience) Scoreboard published by United States-based research firm Global SWF.
The GSR Scoreboard has become the measuring stick of best practices among state-owned investors around the world. It evaluates more than 200 sovereign wealth funds (SWF) and public pension funds worldwide on governance practices, sustainability commitments and institutional resilience.
In a statement today, PNB said it received an overall score of 84 per cent, including a perfect 10 out of 10 for sustainability, in recognition of its climate targets, environmental, social and governance (ESG) integration, and transparency in reporting.
"The ranking reflects the significant progress PNB has made in strengthening governance, embedding sustainability across its investment processes, and enhancing its long-term institutional resilience," it said.
PNB deputy president and group chief executive Datuk Rick Ramli said the ranking reflects the fund's ongoing efforts to incorporate responsible and sustainable practices in its operations and investment activities.
"It is also a strong encouragement for us to continue pushing for long-term value creation for our unit holders and the wider Malaysian economy, in line with PNB's purpose of uplifting the financial lives of Malaysians across generations," he said.
PNB said that notable progress includes a 98 per cent reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions from its 2022 baseline, in line with its target to achieve net zero operations by 2025.
On portfolio-level targets, PNB has pledged to achieve a net-zero investment portfolio by 2050 and has so far channelled RM5.5 billion into green and transition assets, representing 55 per cent of its RM10 billion target by 2030.
PNB has also implemented a living wage policy for its employees since 2023 and is now encouraging its investee companies to adopt similar practices under the government's GEAR-uP initiative.

CelcomDigi onboards first 100 SMEs, partners to vendor empowerment initiative

KUALA LUMPUR: CelcomDigi Bhd has onboarded nearly 100 Malaysian small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and exclusive sales partners from over 60 companies into the first cohort of its newly-launched Vendor Empowerment and Excellence Programme (VEEP). The first phase of the programme began with a focus on building ESG fundamentals using the Simplified ESG Disclosure Guide (SEDG) for SMEs in supply chains, in collaboration with Capital Markets Malaysia (CMM). The guide provides participating SMEs with practical tools to integrate responsible practices, as well as to measure and disclose their environmental, social and governance (ESG) impact in line with Bursa Malaysia's expectations for ESG-compliant corporate ecosystems. Delivering the closing address on behalf of CelcomDigi chief executive officer Datuk Idham Nawawi, chief corporate affairs officer Joachim Rajaram said the initiative marks a significant milestone in the company's mission to support local businesses. "SMEs form over 97 per cent of Malaysia's business landscape and are projected to deliver 45 per cent of the country's GDP this year, making them a driving force of our economy." "Supporting their growth is a strategic priority for us as part of our ESG commitment to build a sustainable value chain," said Rajaram. "With Malaysian companies making up over 72 per cent of our value chain, we see a clear opportunity to empower Malaysia's business landscape by starting within our own ecosystem," he added. He noted that VEEP is CelcomDigi's long-term commitment to uplift SMEs through structured support and strategic collaboration. "Today's partnership with CMM lays the groundwork for responsible business practices." "We aim to build a comprehensive programme that supports the growth and sustainability of SMEs, not just through ESG adoption but also via cross-sector collaboration to expand access to business opportunities, funding channels and technological advancements," he said. Rajaram also highlighted the broader goals of the programme which is to help SMEs professionalise their operations, strengthen responsible business practices and ultimately, position themselves to compete in both domestic and global markets.

US to unveil chip import probe findings in two weeks as Trump hints at fresh tariffs

EDINBURGH, July 28 — The Trump administration will announce the results of a national security probe into imports of semiconductors in two weeks, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said on Sunday, as President Donald Trump suggested higher tariffs were on the horizon. Lutnick told reporters after a meeting between Trump and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen that the investigation was one of the 'key reasons' the European Union sought to negotiate a broader trade agreement that would 'resolve all things at one time.' Trump said many companies would be investing in semiconductor manufacturing in the United States, including some from Taiwan and other places, to avoid getting hit by new tariffs. He said von der Leyen had avoided the pending chips tariffs 'in a much better way.' Trump and von der Leyen announced a new framework trade agreement that includes across-the-board 15 per cent tariffs on EU imports entering the United States. Trump said the agreement included autos, which face a higher 25 per cent tariff under a separate sectoral tariff action. The Trump administration in April said it was investigating whether extensive reliance on foreign imports of pharmaceuticals and semiconductors posed a national security threat. The probe, being conducted under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962, could lay the groundwork for new tariffs on imports in both sectors. The Trump administration has begun separate investigations under the same law into imports of copper and lumber. Earlier probes completed during Trump's first term formed the basis for 25 per cent tariffs rolled out since his return to the White House in January on steel and aluminum and on the auto industry. Trump has upended global trade with a series of aggressive levies against trading partners, including a 10 per cent tariff that took effect in April, with that rate set to increase sharply for most larger trading partners from August 1. The US relies heavily on chips imported from Taiwan, something Democratic former President Joe Biden sought to reverse during his term by granting billions of dollars in Chips Act awards to lure chipmakers to expand production in the United States. — Reuters

Rubber Market Closes Lower On Profit-taking

WORLD By Nur Athirah Mohd Shaharuddin KUALA LUMPUR, July 28 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian rubber market closed lower on Monday, in tandem with regional rubber futures markets, amid profit-taking that triggered a short-term pullback, a dealer said. The dealer said that market sentiment was further dampened by weaker economic data from China. 'Nevertheless, further losses were capped by gains in crude oil prices and a shortage of natural rubber due to persistent rain in major producing countries,' she told Bernama. At 4.47 pm, Brent crude oil gained by 0.48 per cent to US$68.75 per barrel. The dealer also noted that market players were cautious ahead of the Federal Reserve meeting and the outcome of the renewed United States (US)-China trade negotiations. 'The US and China are expected to extend their tariff truce by an additional 90 days during trade talks starting Monday in Stockholm. 'Meanwhile, the temporary suspension of most tariffs, agreed in May, is due to expire on Aug 15, 2025,' she added. Additionally, the dealer noted that the US has paused restrictions on technology exports to China in an effort to advance trade agreements with the country.
