Dubai cashless strategy: Why Dubai is moving on from physical money

Dubai big plans to eventually become a cashless city.
The Dubai cashless strategy will eventually mean that all payments in the city across the government and private sectors will go digital.
The initiative, first announced in October 2024, aims to ditch notes and coins for digital payments throughout the emirate.
Cashless transactions are expected to hit around 90 percent of all transactions by 2026, potentially boosting economic growth by over Dhs8 billion annually.
Becoming cashless does not mean that money will be abandoned altogether but, instead, payments will be digital with banking apps and credit cards currently the main way to pay without physical notes or coins.
The strategy will also prioritise innovations in digital payments, including AI-driven solutions and contactless technologies to offer even more ways to pay.
And the latest development by DIFC and Dubai Finance means that there will be specialised workshops to help businesses make the switch. The collab will also bring AI-driven initiatives that add value for workers, tourists and the broader community by adopting digital payments.

The city plans for 100 percent of stores to accept digital payments and for everyone living in the city to be able to pay digitally.
That's right, bartering at the souq with notes or rummaging around the back of the sofa for long-lost change could soon be a thing of the past.
The Dubai Cashless Strategy was initially revealed late on Tuesday October 1 following a meeting of The Executive Council of Dubai.
Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, chaired that meeting, outlining that the city aims to make itself one of the top five cashless cities in the world.

Dubai has also outlined that it wants to make a range of financial technology services available to people in the city.
The plan to make the switch to becoming cashless has been brought about with consumers, payment service providers and merchants in mind with the move set to have a wider benefit of convenience and speedier payments throughout the emirate.
At the meeting, the city also discussed its overarching real estate strategies, plans for education and the future of transport in Dubai.

AI or human? Dubai launches world-first labelling system that tells you the difference

Feeling confused about whether what you've just read was AI or a human? You're not alone. And that's why the latest announcement by the Dubai leadership should come as welcome news for anyone who has been duped by AI content. Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Deputy Prime Minister of the UAE, has announced the world's first Human-Machine Collaboration Icons. Essentially, these icons have been designed to clearly identify whether content has been made entirely by humans or by artificial intelligence. Dubai government entities have been directed to start adopting the system in research and knowledge-based endeavours. And Sheikh Hamdan has called on researchers, publications, creators and institutions to adopt the new labelling system. Today, we launch the world's first Human–Machine Collaboration Icons: a classification system that brings transparency to how research, publications, and content are created. Developed by @DubaiFuture, the icons reflect Dubai's commitment to open, responsible, and future-ready… — Hamdan bin Mohammed (@HamdanMohammed) July 16, 2025 He said: 'Distinguishing between human creativity and artificial intelligence has become a real challenge in light of today's rapid technological advances. 'This calls for a new approach to recognise the growing role of intelligent machines. That's why we launched the world's first Human–Machine Collaboration Icons, a classification system that brings transparency to how research documents, publications, and content are created. 'We invite researchers, writers, publishers, designers, and content creators around the world to adopt this new global classification system and use it responsibly and in ways that benefit people.' The icons, developed by the Dubai Future Foundation, act as clear indicators of whether content has been entirely made by a human, made with the assistance of AI or entirely by AI. Creators, publications and researchers who wish to use the icon system can download the icons via the Dubai Future Foundation. How the Human-Machine Collaboration (HMC) classification system works What does trust look like in the age of #AI? As machine and human intelligence become harder to tell apart, authorship becomes harder to trace. To support transparency, we've launched the 'Human–Machine Collaboration icons' (HMC), a visual system that makes AI involvement in… — Dubai Future Foundation (@DubaiFuture) July 16, 2025 The classification system defines 'intelligent machines' as a broad category encompassing various digital technologies, including algorithms, automation tools, generative AI models, and robotics, or any technological system that plays a role in the research or content creation process. There are three separate labels for AI-assisted content, with one indicating human-produced content enhanced by AI for accuracy, correction or improvement. In the middle of the five icons is one that's jointly human and machine-led, with no clear leader between the two. Another label will clearly label that content has been led by AI, with humans only stepping in to verify quality and accuracy. (Credit: Dubai Future Foundation) The labels use an arrow system, with the upwards arrow indicating human-led content and a downward arrow signalling machine-led content. In addition to the five primary icons, the system also includes nine functional icons that indicate where in the process human–machine collaboration occurred. These cover ideation, literature review, data collection, data analysis, data interpretation, writing, translation, visuals, and design. The icon system is designed to be flexible and adaptable across sectors, industries, and content formats, including image and video outputs. While it doesn't assign any percentages or exact weights to the contribution of either side, it does allow creators and researchers to be transparent about the use of AI in their work. Sheikh Mohammed launches AI UAE government system to save over 250,000 hours per year

The United Arab Emirates has launched a new proactive government performance system which will use AI to save hundreds of thousands of hours of work every year. Introduced by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, the new system aims to improve service delivery. It will use AI-powered data analytics, predictive capabilities and in-depth analysis to assist with strategic planning and improve the government's ability to predict future challenges. The new system aims to help the government help achieve its 'We the UAE 2031' vision, which targets four main pillars –society, economy, diplomacy and ecosystem. Government efficiency is at the heart of the new system which aims to optimise resource use, improve service quality and monitor timely implementation of national strategies and plans. It is predicted that it will process over 150 million data points every month, provide leadership with over 50,000 proactive insights annually and save over 250,000 hours per year. .@HHShkMohd: We have launched a new performance measurement system in the Federal Government designed to support decision-making, track the progress of plans and strategies, and enhance the government's ability to anticipate future challenges and opportunities through the use of… — Dubai Media Office (@DXBMediaOffice) July 9, 2025 The system is based on an intelligent government performance management framework that leverages AI tools and algorithms to monitor and enhance performance. AI will help the UAE government with in-depth analysis, executive summaries and predictive performance management. 200 government employees in performance management and data analysis will be trained to use the system, which is set to support over 250,000 users. Real-time data will be used to predict future performance and generate flexible reports that support government decision-making. By doing this, it will allow the UAE government to be better prepared for any future challenges and opportunities. The UAE's government performance system has evolved since its 2008 launch as the Adaa System. It progressed to Adaa 2.0 in 2013, then Adaa 3.0 in 2019, and now culminating in the latest generation: the Proactive Government Performance System.
