The UNC baseball team is just moments away from kicking off its NCAA Tournament run, which begins Friday, May 30 against Holy Cross at 12 p.m. in the Chapel Hill Regional.
North Carolina (42-12, 18-11), which finished third in a loaded ACC during the regular season, captured its ninth ACC Tournament Championship with a 14-4 drubbing of Clemson. The Diamond Heels enacted revenge on Florida State during the ACC Semis, winning 7-5 thanks to two ninth-inning runs, but not before taking care of Boston College during a 7-2 win.
Holy Cross (31-25, 17-8) beat Army West Point twice, 12-1 and 8-7, to capture the Patriot League Championship. The Crusaders won't be a pushover, despite playing in a smaller conference – and will look to play spoiler in Chapel Hill.
UNC, which should win today's game comfortably, has all the tools to make a deep run. North Carolina sports arguably the best pitching staff across college baseball, led by ACC Pitcher of the Year Jake Knapp, plus a starting lineup that generates the perfect combination of speed and power.
The 2024 Diamond Heels composed an uber-talented squad, led by Vance Honeycutt, but nearly lost in their Chapel Hill Regional opener. Third baseman Gavin Gallaher played hero in against LIU in that nightcap, blasting a walk-off grand slam and keeping UNC in the winner's bracket.
