Coronation Street legend Sue Cleaver gives health update after quitting ITV soap – and reveals TV and Loose Women future

The Sun20-06-2025
CORONATION Street legend Sue Cleaver has given fans a fresh health update after quitting the ITV soap after 25 years.
The actress, who played telly favourite Eileen Grimshaw since 2000, waved goodbye to the cobbles in an emotional exit episode earlier this month.

Behind-the-scenes, Sue, 61, was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes over 20 years ago, and while she's known for her strength on screen, the star admitted at times she'd feel faint while filming.
But the star has now admitted that the use of Dexcom, a continuous glucose monitor, has helped give her back control of her life.
Speaking exclusively to The Sun, Sue said: "I think there is a lot of misunderstanding around diabetes, people tell you can't eat chocolate or sugar - but where I struggle with my diabetes is when I'm about to go on stage or when I'm about to go on Loose Women or live shows.
"Before I go on I'd have to prick my finger and check if they're stable enough to get me to the interval or do I need to eat.
Sue admitted there has been times that she's felt "faint" on screen.
"If I'm about to go on stage or live shows and I don't know if I'm going to make it if my sugars aren't stable enough, and I don't have time to prick my finger, you tend to think 'let me eat this thing now' and then you tend to feel the effects of it later or the middle of the show.
"But where the Dexcom, I just have to look at my phone and see my sugar levels, it takes all of the worry out of it."
TV FUTURE
After quitting the soap, Sue has now also revealed what her future TV career plans include and whether or not she'll join a rival soap.
She told us: "I'm chuffed with my Coronation Street legacy, they gave me a wonderful send off and the ending that I asked for and I wanted Eileen's exit to mirror what I feel I'm doing and what I want other women to do - to live fearlessly, don't let fear hold you back, be who you want to be.
"It's never too late to try something new, that's what I wanted for her, this realisation for her to go 'hang on a minute, I don't have to stay, I can do something completely different, all it takes is courage.
"I think people forget that you either have courage or you don't, courage is a muscle, start really small and put yourself our of your comfort zone for a couple of minutes a day, enquire about book club or evening class, because that muscle really does."
Sue said her final scenes "brought a tear to her eye" as she saw the taxis lined up down the street.
"There were moments when I had a little wave of emotion, we filmed the final scene on a Thursday and we went out for dinner and I came back on the Friday to do some other scenes and at the end of that it was really weird feeling. It felt right."
The TV star admitted she now has the "freedom" to explore other passion projects after spending over two decades at ITV.
She said: "It was the right time for me to go, the door is still open, my hearts there, my husband still works there, I still see them all.
"But for now, it's absolutely the right thing, it's time for me to have some freedom, to not be committed to things, to do passion projects, which is why I'm going back to the theatre.
"I love doing Loose Women, there are other things I want to do and there is a lot more of the world I want to see."
Although Sue has the freedom to join other soaps, she admitted her loyalties still lie with Corrie, saying: "I don't think so at this stage, I think I'm very committed to Corrie and Corrie has been very committed to me.
"I've been incredibly fortunate and it gave me the opportunity that not many actresses have, to be at home, to be there for my son in the morning and put him to bed at night and to have a proper home life, whereas normally you have to go where the work is.
"I've been extremely fortunate, it's not lost on me how lucky I've been, it has a big place in my heart."
Soap fans were devastated after it was announced that matriarch Eileen was set to leave the soap, just months after Helen Worth, who played Gail Platt, also said farewell.
She said: "Weirdly enough I remember quite a long time before it came out that Helen was going, she rang me and said 'I just wanted to ring and tell you I'm leaving', and I went 'Helen, I just want to tell you I'm leaving as well'."
A number of stars on the soap have been axed over the last few years amid budget cuts.
However, Sue, who starred on I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out of Here in 2022, admitted she left the soap on her terms and had made the decision years ago.
"I made the decision to leave when I went and did the jungle, I'd known for a while, it had been a while in the planning," she said.
HEALTH UPDATE
Sue has opened up about wearing the Dexcom ONE+, a continuous glucose monitor that helps track her glucose levels to manage her Type 2 diabetes.
Sue said: "Dexcom has made a big difference in my life, having diabetes and having decision fatigue - it can be a mental marathon all the time.
"Diabetes is lifelong and the management is lifelong and you do get tired thinking about what you can eat and what impact it's going to have.
"What I love about Dexcom, it helps me see how my body is reacting to stress, food in real time. It stops me needing to guess but it tracks all the trends.
Dexcom is a small, fast and easy to use, helping to simplify diabetes management for those with Type 2.
Dexcom's new State of Type 2 Report - which looked at patients and doctors in the UK and other key European cities - discovered 72% of those living with Type 2 Diabetes believe that using a CGM device helps to improve their lives, a further 74% believe that it would also reduce the risk of complications.
EXIT STORYLINE
Sue said she told ITV bosses that she wanted her on-screen son Ryan Thomas to return as part of her exit storyline.
She said: "I asked for Ryan to come back, I rang him even before I rang Corrie to let him know I was leaving. I told him not to say anything and asked him to come back and he went 'I'd have to for my mother'. They asked me what plan of exit I'd like and I said I want Eileen to go off to Thailand to start her new life and Ryan to come back and take me."
The theatre star said she now has the freedom work on various other projects after dedicating over two decades to the soap.
"I won't miss being tied to people, I'm really enjoying my freedom and getting up in the morning and going to the gym and deciding what to do with my day," she continued.
"Everything I do now are passion projects like going back to the theatre.
"I've got so much going on at the minute."
Although Sue is no long on Corrie, she has her hands full with other TV jobs including being a panelist on Loose Women.
But the star firmly hit back at rumours that the panel is feuding.
Sue said: "I love it. I've known the girls for years, it's such a fun thing to do. It's that typical thing, Denise and I will disagree with something on the show, we're great mates, we've known each other for 26 years but then there are rumours that they've fallen out, we've not fallen out over anything.
"People don't say that when you see Match of the Day, can we not please move on.
"It is one big family and a huge amount of loyalty. We're very honest and brave and we put ourselves out there and in order to do that we have to feel very safe.
"We don't wear our heart on our sleeve and talk about things like that when you don't feel safe.
"There aren't clashes, we're making our programme and doing our job - it's just different opinions, we're not falling out with each other. I get on with everybody, I love them all. It's just really nice."
Last month it was announced that Loose Women will air for only 30 weeks of the year from January.
Speaking about her Loose Women future, Sue said: "Nobody knows what's happening in TV, I'm just getting on with what I'm doing in my life and I'm just enjoying it.
"I've had a great time on it, I've had a great ride, I don't know what will happen in the future - I don't know what's going to happen tomorrow or the next hour."

Ross King brings foot bath to first day of Strictly Come Dancing rehearsals in a bid to avoid sore toes

It was only the first day of Strictly Come Dancing rehearsals yesterday – but some of the show's class of 2025 are already making sure their feet remain in pristine condition. Good Morning Britain and Lorraine's Los Angeles reporter Ross King even took a £30 Revlon Pediprep spa with him to the London studios. The device promises a 'relaxing, bubbling foot massage'. It is well known that celebrity contestants on the BBC show suffer bruises and lost toenails as they compete for the glitter ball trophy. King, 63, was joined at the rehearsals by his new co-stars, including former England rugby captain Chris Robshaw, 39, and La Voix, 45, star of RuPaul 's Drag Race UK and broadcaster Dani Dyer, 29, daughter of ex-EastEnders star Danny. Meanwhile, former England women's footballer Karen Carney, 38, and Game of Thrones actor Kristian Nairn, 49, were yesterday announced to complete the line-up of the new series, which starts next month on BBC One. Nairn, who stands at 6ft 9ins, is perhaps the show's tallest contestant ever. He played Hodor in the HBO fantasy series and is also known for his role as Wee John Feeney in the HBO comedy Our Flag Means Death. Amongst the celebrities gearing up for practice was former The Apprentice star Thomas Skinner [right] Among the celebrities gearing up for practice was former The Apprentice star Thomas Skinner, who earlier in the day had hit back at 'woke' critics complaining of his signing to the show. Critics had demanded the BBC revoke his invite to join Strictly Come Dancing 2025 because he met JD Vance, with some Strictly fans bombarding the Beeb with complaints and vowing to boycott the show. Taking to X on Friday, Thomas, 34, addressed the backlash, penning: 'Some call me 'controversial,' but I think it's just a dig at normal, hard-working people if I'm honest. But we don't let that stop us. We keep going, we look out for each other, and we use it to drive us forward.' In his message, he shared his excitement as heading filming Strictly for the first time, noting he was 'proud as anything', before thanking his fans for their support. Thomas also revealed he has to 'keep the wheels' and work as he's got three kids and a wife to support, before cheerfully signing off and inviting anyone local to have 'a pint' with him later. The businessman flashed a dazzling smile as she climbed out of his car and joined his fellow stars for the start of their Strictly journey. Meanwhile, the Strictly Come Dancing professional dancers were on fine form as they too arrived, led by Dianne Buswell. The flame-haired beauty was certainly in great spirits as she turned up alongside the likes of Nancy Xu and brand new pros Alexis Warr and Julian Caillon. Meanwhile, Nadiya Bychkova was seen for the first time since her horror fall earlier this week. The Ukrainian dancer, 35, was reportedly taken to hospital on Tuesday after falling and landing on her back during rehearsals. The star was training in north London when she was left in agony after injuring her back, with crew forced to phone an ambulance. However, after updating her fans on her condition, the blonde bombshell was back to her best as she joined her fellow pros for rehearsals.

Mrs Brown's Boys viewers convinced Agnes will DIE after slipping into a coma with just one episode of series left

MRS Brown's Boys viewers are convinced Agnes will die - as she slipped into a coma. Show creator Brendan O'Carroll portrays the loud-mouth matriarch Agnes. 4 4 4 However, the sitcom has been a magnet for criticism since its debut in 2011. In the latest episode, viewers watched on as Agnes fell into a coma and was taken to hospital. The ending featured her doctors revealing they'll have to turn off the life support machines. Writing online, fans have been left certain of Agnes' demise - albeit very divided in their reactions. One said on X: "Is she dead? Is this the last ever series?? Fingers crossed!!!" Another penned: "RIP Mrs Brown - thanks for the laughs." While a fourth remarked: "She's DEAD. Finally we're free from the curse of the worst show on tv." Viewers who have already watched the whole series on iPlayer will know this is not the end for Agnes. One further episode in the current series is still to be aired on BBC One. Mrs Brown's Boys' viewers demand BBC series is cancelled as they slam New Year's special Elsewhere, the long-running show's future is yet to be officially confirmed. The sitcom is currently on series five, with no confirmation yet about further instalments. Mrs Brown's Boys fifth 'mini-series' was previously announced in January - and those episodes are airing now. Creator-star Brendan told the Daily Star at the time: "We are going to film another series in April and May [2025]. Best BBC comedies A BBC boss called on the industry to "save our sitcoms", but the corporation has a history of fantastic shows. We look back at some of the best to ever grace the screen. Fawlty Towers (1975-1979) - Only two series were made of the beloved institution. However, the cultural impact of the series starring John Cleese and Connie Booth spans decades. It follows rude and intolerant Basil Fawlty (Cleese) as he attempts to improve the reputation of his hotel. Only Fools and Horses (1981-2003) - The show was crowned by some as the best British sitcom of all time by a TV poll in 2004. Seven series were broadcast on BBC until 1991 with additional sporadic Christmas specials airing until 2003. Sir David Jason starred as ambitious market trader Derek "Del Boy" Trotter whilst Nicholas Lyndhurst played his younger half-brother Rodney. Set in working-class Peckham in south-east London, it follows the highs and lows of the lives of the Trotters', in particular their brazen attempts to get rich. Blackadder (1983 - 1989) - Four series were made of the iconic show, created by Richard Curtis and Rowan Atkinson. Each series spans a different historical period as anti-hero Edmund Blackadder (Atkinson) tries to better himself in each society. Accompanied by his dogsbody Baldrick (Tony Robinson), trouble always ensues. A TV poll in 2004 found that Blackadder was voted the second-best British sitcom of all time Absolutely Fabulous (1992 - 2012) - Jennifer Saunders and Joanna Lumley star as failing PR guru Edina 'Eddie' Monsoon and alcoholic fashionista Patsy Stone. The pair embark on heavy-drinking sessions and abuse drugs in a desperate attempt to stay 'hip'. Eddie constantly chases bizarre fads and fails to lose weight whilst her disappointed and neglected daughter Saffy (Julia Sawalha) looks on. Little Britain (2003 - 2006) - The premise is simple. A sketch show which features different British people from all walks of life that are engaged in all sorts of comical scenarios. Starring Matt Lucas and David Walliams, the pair created iconic pop culture characters. Viewers loved obnoxious council estate teenager Vicky Pollard, morbidly obese scrounger Bubbles Devere, slimming coach Marjorie Dawes, despondent office worker Carol Beer, disgraced politician Sir Norman Fry, of course the iconic Lou and Andy! The Catherine Tate Show (2004-2015) - A sketch show starring the likes of Catherine Tate. She made iconic characters such as rowdy schoolgirl Lauren Cooper with her line 'Am I bovvered?'. Other characters featured Bernie the nurse, the aga saga woman, complaining couple Janice and Ray, and of course her infamous 'Nan', Joannie Taylor. The last character herself spawned multiple specials and even a movie. Gavin and Stacey (2007 - Present) The series tells the story of Gavin (Matthew Horne) and Stacey (Joanna Page). The pair embarked on an online and telephone romance for six months. But when they finally decide to be together properly, their friends and family get in the way. Ruth Jones and James Corden created the beloved show, which has been going for over a decade. The 2019 Christmas special was the most-watched comedy in 17 years and the most-viewed non-sporting event in a decade. "It's lovely to be asked to do another one." The BBC 's head of comedy, Jon Petrie, added: "Brendan has created an iconic comedy character in Agnes Brown. "Mrs. Brown's Boys is a BAFTA-winning comedy show and one of the BBC's most-watched comedies ever… I'm proud to have it in the BBC Comedy stable." Mrs Brown's Boys airs on BBC One and iPlayer. 4

Kate and William's fresh start: Prince and Princess of Wales to move family to new eight-bedroom 'forever home' in Windsor after Kate's cancer battle

Prince William and Princess Kate are set to move their family from Adelaide Cottage to a new 'forever home' by the end of the year, an insider has said. The couple, along with their children Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, reportedly plan to relocate to the eight-bedroom Forest Lodge property in Windsor Great Park. A source told The Sun the family are hoping for a 'fresh start' after a difficult time at Adelaide Cottage, during which Queen Elizabeth died and Kate and Charles received cancer diagnoses. Renovations are reportedly underway at the property to enable it to be ready for the family to move in before the end of the year. The publication reports that planning applications show how minor work has already begun at the Grade-II listed lodge, with renovations reportedly set to be funded by the couple themselves. A source close to the family reportedly told the tabloid: 'Windsor has become their home. However, over the last few years while they have lived at Adelaide Cottage there have been some really difficult times. "Moving gives them an opportunity for a fresh start and a new chapter; an opportunity to leave some of the more unhappy memories behind.' The home offers spectacular views and football fan William will be able to see the Wembley Arch from his bedroom window. And Kate has already been spotted picking new furniture to kit out the new abode, including a 24-seater table. The family first moved to Windsor in 2022, where they settled at the humble Adelaide Cottage. It is believed the move out of London was to allow the family to be closer to the late Queen, who died just weeks later, and to give the children a more ordinary way of life with more privacy. The family have no live-in staff at their current home, with this also reportedly set to be the case once they move into this bigger abode.
