Rylan Clark shares 'nightmare' plane journey that left him saying 'I didn't think I'd be here'
Radio presenter Rylan Clark revealed his flight "nightmare" as his journey home from a brief Spanish getaway was plagued with problems, leaving him worried he'd miss his BBC Radio 2 programme.
The former X Factor contestant had jetted off to Marbella for a quick break with his cherished mum Linda, but their return to London turned into a comedy of errors.
The homeward trip encountered multiple setbacks, including faulty air conditioning, engine troubles and frustrated passengers threatening to abandon the aircraft, which Rylan amusingly recounted alongside his mother's experience.
Telling the tale to his BBC Radio 2 colleague Sally Boazman yesterday (Saturday, August 8), he revealed: "I didn't think I was going to be here. I had a nightmare yesterday.
"About half an hour after we're supposed to board, everyone's like: 'What's going on?' Basically the women went 'there's a problem with the air con on the plane. On the way out it just went off so it's just sweating for everyone. They're just fixing it now,'" reports the Manchester Evening News.
"Everyone's like: 'How long's that going to be?' They say 'seconds'."
The 36 year old explained that another hour passed with passengers eventually sitting on the floor before being told the aircraft was ready.
However, matters deteriorated further when they boarded and discovered the left engine had failed due to a computer glitch, according to the pilot.
He revealed: "Basically there was a problem with the computer, it's not firing the left engine. It's a software error.
"They had to switch the plane off for seven minutes. Everything is turned off, it's silent. I've never been on a plane like this before."
Rylan revealed that they had been aboard the aircraft for two hours when one family began insisting they wanted to disembark.
He described the scene: "One family want to get off. I've never seen anything more British than a plane of people turn against a family.
"We all knew every single bag had to be put onto the runway to find their four bags. That's taken another hour. They've run out of water.
"Then the mechanics go: 'We've managed to get the engine working.' Then they said they need to re-fuel because they've left the plane on for so long."
Rylan quipped he could have travelled to Dubai and back given the extensive hold-up.
He concluded the tale by revealing they arrived home "safe and sound" at London City Airport just before 10pm, barely avoiding a diversion due to the airport's 10pm curfew.
Despite the gruelling day for Rylan and his mother, he heaped praise on the aircraft's captain and crew who helped make the nightmarish journey from Malaga Airport back to London more tolerable.

Rylan Clark admits 'I've been to rock bottom' as he shares divorce 'regret'
Rylan Clark has admitted he has been to 'rock bottom' following the breakdown of his marriage to Dan Neal, but has said that the split was the 'right thing' for the pair Rylan Clark confesses he 'reached rock bottom' after 'running himself into the ground' during his marriage breakdown. The 36-year-old presenter separated from former Big Brother star Dan Neal in 2021. Their six-year union came to an end after the former X Factor hopeful acknowledged he had been disloyal earlier in their romance. Whilst Rylan now recognises the separation was the "right thing" for both parties, he has been candid about his difficulties throughout the divorce. The ordeal forced the celebrity to take four months away from work and also resulted in a stint in hospital, reports the Manchester Evening News. Speaking on his How to Be In Love podcast, Rylan has revealed how he felt following the end of his relationship with Dan. He said: "I can safely say at this point that I have been to rock bottom, whatever you want to call it, and I know I'm never going to let myself go back there. But what that has equally done for me is make me cautious. "It's made me very, very frightened to open myself up to someone. It's made me frightened to trust someone, and I'm not as confident as my work persona in my personal life." Self-help guru Mel Robbins informed Rylan that reaching "rock bottom" is "a gift". She explained: "All a rock bottom moment is, is really quite a gift, you know it's a rock bottom moment because you hit something solid inside yourself, and that's a resolve to change. "A rock bottom moment is when the pain of staying where you are is actually harder than doing the work that you have been avoiding to get better. That's all that it is." Rylan, the Saturday afternoon host on Radio 2, expressed his "biggest regret" was how he handled his break up. He confessed: "I don't regret anything about my relationship finishing or anything like that, I've learnt a lot from that. "Just the way I handled it, I drove myself into the ground when really, I wish I looked back and went, 'Hang on, you're fine, this is fine'. I wish I'd never got as bad as I did because of my own way, I was thinking it's the end of the world." Previously, Rylan has spoken about feeling like a "failure" following his divorce. In a conversation with former Love Islander Tasha Ghouri, he revealed: "When I went through my divorce, I had a full-on breakdown because it wasn't just us. "It felt like it wasn't just us, even though it was just me and my ex. I felt that everyone's going to think this of me. Everyone's going to think, 'Oh look, his life isn't perfect. Oh look, he's failed like that.' I just felt like a failure." In his autobiography, TEN: The Decade That Changed My Future, the star opened up about preparing himself for a new relationship. He penned: "I got in a relationship quite young and just went with it. Now I know I'm my own person. I'm not going to settle for something that's not right. In a way it's been a bit of a gift. "I'm happy to have sex with someone and that's that, that's not a problem. But do I want more? Of course I want more. Am I going to enjoy myself on the way? Abso-f***ing-lutely."
