Centre approves Rs 1.49 crore for day care cancer centre at Wenlock hospital
Dakshina Kannada MP Capt. Brijesh Chowta announced the approval on Monday, stating that the new centre aims to bridge the gap in cancer care between rural and urban regions by providing timely, localised services. The initiative is part of a nationwide rollout announced in the Union Budget 2025–26 to set up DCCCs in all district hospitals over the next three years. In the first phase, 200 such centres are being established based on data from the National Cancer Registry and proposals submitted by state governments. Sixteen districts in Karnataka have been selected.
The Mangaluru centre will offer cancer screening, diagnostics, chemotherapy, palliative care, awareness programmes, and supportive services — all within the Wenlock Hospital campus. It aims to reduce the patient load on tertiary hospitals and improve treatment access at the district level. MP Chowta welcomed the Centre's decision and thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda for addressing a vital need of the region. He termed the approval 'a timely and people-centric decision' that will ease the treatment burden for patients who would otherwise need to travel long distances.

So far, a total of approximately 389.5 crore people have been screened for hypertension, while diabetes screenings stand close at 387.7 crore. Screening for oral cancer has reached around 328 crore, breast cancer screenings total 172.1 crore, and cervical cancer screenings account for over 102 crore individuals, said Union Health Minister Prataprao Jadhav in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha. Regarding treatment, around 4.75 crore hypertension patients and 2.83 crore diabetes patients are currently under treatment. The number of patients receiving treatment for oral cancer stands at 1.77 lakh. Breast and cervical cancer treatments have been administered to approximately 61,742 and 97,085 patients respectively, the Minister said, talking about the government's ongoing efforts in screening and managing NCDs across the country. He said a population-based initiative for prevention, control and screening for common NCDs has been rolled out in the country under National Health Mission (NHM) as a part of Comprehensive Primary Health Care. Under the initiative, persons more than 30 years of age are targeted for their screening. 'Prevention, control and screening services are being provided through trained frontline workers like Accredited Social Health Activist (ASHA) and Auxiliary Nurse and Midwife (ANM), and the referral support and continuity of care is ensured through community health centres, district hospitals and other tertiary care institutions,' the Minister added. Further, as per the announcement of Union Budget 2025-26, the government plans to set up Day Care Cancer Centres (DCCCs) in district hospitals in the next 3 years, out of which 200 centres are to be set up in 2025-26, he said. MP urges Union minister to upgrade Trichy ESI hospital
Trichy: MP Durai Vaiko met the Union labour and employment minister Mansukh Mandaviya at New Delhi on Tuesday seeking upgradation of the ESI hospital in Trichy by adding specialty medical services there. He also sought opening of a sub-regional office for the Employees' State Insurance scheme at Trichy, a proposal which has been put on hold for nine years now. The ESI hospital at Periya Milaguparai near Trichy district collectorate has 50 beds, primarily catering to the needs of employees and their family members covered under the ESI scheme. Beneficiaries from eight districts in the central region are using the facility. However, users complained that medical facilities such as specialized doctors, equipment and other infrastructure available are inadequate compared to other ESI hospitals in major cities. "Number of beds in the hospital should be increased to 100 along with increasing the workforce. New infrastructure with sophisticated facilities should be introduced," Durai Vaiko said. Similarly, while the Union labour ministry approved for the formation of a sub-regional office at Trichy by bifurcating the existing office at Salem in 2016, the proposal has not made any progress since then, the MP said. "A sub-regional office is essential to serve around 10 lakh beneficiaries covered under the scheme in the region. New branch offices sanctioned for Ariyalur, Perambalur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, and Mayiladuthurai were not opened as well. So, the sub-regional office in Trichy would be helpful," the MP said.

Nadda urged to give permission for MBBS admission in two Odisha medical colleges
Agency: PTI Bhubaneswar, Aug 5 (PTI) The Odisha government on Tuesday urged Union Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda to grant permission for admission in 100 MBBS seats in two new government-run medical colleges of the state for the academic session 2025-26. Odisha Health & Family Welfare Minister Mukesh Mahaling, along with Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan who hailed from the state, and others, met Nadda in New Delhi and raised this demand. Mahaling requested Nadda to issue for Letter of Permission (LoP) for admission of 100 MBBS seats in the 2025-26 session in each of Pavitra Mohan Pradhan Medical College (PMPMC), Talcher and Government Medical College (GMC), Phulbani, a statement issued by the Odisha health department said here. Both institutions have recently been established to cater to the growing demand in the medical education sector of Odisha. The respective deans and principals of these two institutions had already submitted their applications for LoP on January 18, 2025, through the National Medical Commission (NMC) portal, the statement said. The NMC teams had also conducted physical inspections of the Pavitra Mohan Pradhan Medical College in June 2025 and Government Medical College, Phulbani in May last. The state government has provided the budgetary grants to enhance facilities and ensure quality medical education at both institutions, it said. When the LoP is granted, two more government medical colleges will be added to the state's healthcare infrastructure, increasing the total number from 14 to 16 government medical colleges. Consequently, the total number of MBBS seats in government institutions will increase to 1800.
