I'm So Glad My Company Never Went Viral — Here's Why

A long time ago, in the days when my startup was still in its infancy, I craved what I saw other entrepreneurs enjoying: Major, explosive growth. The kind that snatches headlines and earns thousands — no, millions — of shares on social media. The kind of growth that fuels conference panels and cocktail hour gossip.
Now? I am so glad my company never had that.
As scintillating as a big launch day story can be, there's a hidden cost to going viral too soon. Think about it: How many companies have you seen rocket into the stratosphere like a firework, only to flame out just as quickly?
At my company, Jotform, we recently had a major launch. In the months since we released our new product, the outcome has been exactly as I'd wanted: a slow, steady climb in usage. Why would I want that over a viral hit? Let me explain.

The pitfalls of explosive growth
To answer why an entrepreneur would hope for anything less than a runaway smash, let's look back on what happened to the exercise bike company Peloton during the pandemic, when usage surged. The company reacted by pushing its manufacturing capabilities beyond its limits, causing quality and customer satisfaction to take a hit. When the pandemic finally waned, the company was left with a bloated inventory and supply capacity it no longer needed.
SaaS companies don't generally have the issues associated with producing physical products, but the problems are often similar: When usage skyrockets overnight, your systems get tested in ways they weren't designed for. Support tickets pile up. Bugs get exposed in the worst possible ways — publicly, and all at once. Teams scramble, often abandoning longer-term thinking in favor of short-term firefighting.
Even worse, early users drawn in by hype might not be long-term customers, which means the feedback you're acting on isn't actually helpful. Too much growth, too quickly, decimates your ability to listen closely and refine your product in response to real needs.
Improving your product gradually
One of the most valuable things about slow growth is that it offers you the opportunity to improve your product. At Jotform, we released our AI agents and immediately got to work tweaking them based on the feedback we received. I know what we're doing is working, because I'm watching their use increase over time.
Steady growth gives you space to iterate, not just react. I understand it can be difficult to resist the urge to meet demand, but I caution against rushing. Writing for Harvard Business Review, Gary P. Pisano explains that "good growth strategists do not fall into the trap of thinking they can grow fast now and fix things later. They recognize that more-measured growth over a sustained period will lead to much better financial results than explosive growth for a short period of time." I completely agree — the "move fast and break things" ethos is a recipe for overwhelm and loss of trust.
A more disciplined approach lets you catch issues early, optimize systems before they're overburdened, and prioritize features that truly matter to your core users, not just the loudest voices. In our case, it meant identifying which use cases were gaining traction and which needed further support, all without burning out the team or breaking what we'd built.

Learn about actual customer use
When growth is gradual, you get something far more valuable than vanity metrics: insight into how people actually use your product. Not how you hope they'll use it or how they describe it in a survey, but real behavior, in real environments. At Jotform, one of our biggest discoveries after launching our AI agents was that usage wasn't just happening inside our platform. It was happening on users' own websites.
We started seeing thousands of daily views coming from embedded agents — far more than we initially expected. That told us that customers weren't just experimenting with the tool; they were integrating it into their businesses. We saw custom buttons, branded interfaces and even AI agents connected to WhatsApp. These weren't casual users — they were adapting our product to their needs in creative, sometimes surprising ways. This information has been instrumental in helping us chart our path forward from here.
Building for the long-term
When you grow slowly, you don't just learn more — you build better. You're able to lay a strong foundation that can support future scaling, instead of racing to patch things together after the fact. At Jotform, that meant making smart decisions about infrastructure, support systems and product design based on real patterns rather than assumptions.
It also meant giving our team the time to build sustainably, without chaos. When the next wave of users arrives — and it will — we'll be ready, not scrambling, because growth that lasts isn't about the moment or the initial hype. It's about what happens in the months and years that follow.

Tens of thousands of roles were eliminated in a matter of months. This kind of dramatic shift is increasingly the rule, not the exception. AI is a key culprit, causing headcounts to plummet in some areas and surge in others. Geopolitics and tariffs are also increasingly a factor. My company works with an exercise equipment manufacturer whose prices spiked 40% overnight, turning its workforce plans upside down. All of these points point to a stark conclusion: The way most companies approach workforce planning is no longer viable. Any business that still relies on a rigid annual plan is asking for trouble. In fact, businesses are expected to suffer a staggering $8.5 trillion in unrealized annual revenue by 2030, partly thanks to poor workforce planning. It doesn't have to be that way. By taking a much more dynamic approach to workforce planning, companies can match their people with business goals and changing economic conditions in real time. The high cost of an outdated workforce planning If you work at a company where workforce planning is a yearly exercise, you're far from alone. Traditionally, that's how businesses have anticipated their workforce needs. Managers identify sales and revenue goals, then work backward to set budgets and headcounts across different departments. Because yearly planning is a guessing game, it isn't very effective. I know this firsthand from coming up through the software industry, where workforce plans often morph as quickly as they're written. This kind of episodic approach to workforce planning has a number of serious drawbacks: The typical cadence of workforce planning is ill-adapted to the pace of modern work. Almost 40% of companies create 12-month plans. But digital transformation has already compressed business cycles, and AI is now accelerating change at an even faster pace. Plans made last month may already be obsolete. People planning tends to be rudimentary and superficial. Only about one-third of HR leaders say their organization is good at using data for workforce planning, while more than two-thirds said their workforce planning is limited to headcount alone, with no analysis of underlying capacity. More than half of companies lack a clear picture of their employees' current skills and the roles that are likely to face disruption. Planners are still thinking strictly in terms of butts in seats versus a more nuanced assessment of discrete skills needed. What is the consequence of all that? Companies often end up with way too many people, or way too few. This translates either to bloated payrolls or, even worse, inability to serve surging demand. When we surveyed leaders, three-quarters said talent shortfalls left them unable to meet business objectives. Domino effects of poor planning include diminished productivity, burnout and diminished morale, and loss of business to the competition. Here's where continuous workforce planning comes in. A marked departure from annual exercises, this approach incorporates real-time data to create a flexible plan that can be reconfigured in response to changing conditions. Surging demand? Challenges with retention? A spike in costs? Continuous workforce planning adapts instead of waiting to catch up. The key to that flexibility? Gaining insights into how people drive business results in real-time. Historically, accessing and understanding the information needed to make that happen has been an obstacle. Breaking workforce planning out of its silos, the company adopted a more dynamic model that gave it a holistic picture, aligned with business goals and enabled it to react to market fluctuations. Another customer is a healthcare provider that used our workforce planning tool to forecast job vacancies accurately. By proactively hiring some 2,000 caregivers with the right skills at the right time, it ultimately saved more than $3 million. Getting the most out of continuous workforce planning When it comes to continuous workforce planning, I've seen so many companies struggle to get over a few critical obstacles. As helpful as workforce plans are, they do have limits. So resist the temptation to over-plan and get into the weeds. The best plans are a continually evolving model, not an exact picture of conditions on the ground. In a time of AI and economic uncertainty, agility is the only option. By shifting from static to continuous workforce planning, businesses can improve their odds of not just surviving but also thriving in turbulent times.

Has your Peloton bike been collecting dust or doubling as a clothes rack? You're not alone, and now the fitness tech company is making it easier to get those unused bikes into the homes of people who will actually ride them. Peloton just expanded its resale marketplace for bikes, treadmills, and rowing machines nationwide. Peloton first launched the platform in June in only a few markets—Boston, New York, and the D.C. metro area. Since then, users have created over 400 listings and completed roughly three dozen sales. The expansion is part of the struggling company's broader turnaround strategy. 'This initiative provides a valuable service to our community, offering an accessible entry point for new members, a convenient way for existing members to upgrade or sell their equipment, and an opportunity for our equipment to be given a second life,' Chief Product Officer Nick Caldwell said in a press release. Starting today, Peloton owners across the country will be able to list their used equipment and accessories on the platform. And buyers nationwide will be able to make purchases beginning in August. Peloton says it will suggest prices based on market trends and the condition of the user's gear, but sellers still get to set the final price. Those who offload their old equipment on the marketplace will earn some cash from the sale and will receive a discount on their next Peloton purchase. Bikes on the marketplace are listed for as low as $289, hundreds of dollars cheaper than their original $1,445 retail price. Peloton launched in 2012 and quickly gained a reputation as a premium fitness brand, selling pricey equipment with built-in screens that stream live and on-demand workout classes that are available through an additional subscription. The company hit its stride during the covid-19 pandemic, when gyms were closed and people were scrambling for ways to stay active at home. But that momentum didn't last. As life slowly returned to normal after the pandemic, so did people's workout routine outside the home. The company's stock has dropped 95% from its early 2021 peak of nearly $170 a share to around $6 today. And sales of Peloton's fitness equipment are still dropping. In May, the company reported a 27% year-over-year decline in equipment sales during its fiscal third quarter. Earlier this year, Peloton brought in Peter Stern—formerly head of Ford's integrated services division—to take over as CEO. Before his time at Ford, Stern spent years at Apple, where he led the company's services division, overseeing products like Apple TV+ and Apple Fitness+. At the Bloomberg Tech conference in June, Stern said the new marketplace is a key part of Peloton's turnaround strategy. He said the secondhand market was one of the most effective ways for the company to bring in new members. 'There are lots of Peloton bikes in particular that are out there in the world that are being underutilized—and that does no one any good,' Stern said.

These executives, and key members on their teams, have collaborated with the ESG team on the development of GoDaddy's corporate GHG emissions reduction targets. In addition, our Assurance, Risk, and Compliance Team is responsible for maintaining GoDaddy's risk management framework and identifying internal and external risk factors that prevent the company from achieving its strategic and operational objectives. Leveraging GoDaddy's risk management framework methods and criteria, this team supported the ESG Team's assessment and identification of potential climate-related risks and opportunities. pp. 8-9p. 33 Strategy Climate-related risks and opportunities the organization has identified over the short-, medium-, and long-term In our 2024 qualitative scenario analysis, we identified potential climate-related physical risks related to our data center operations and offices. The scenario analysis also assessed nine hazards to identify the impact of climate-driven extreme weather events (acute) and longer-term changes in water stress (chronic). The analysis presented extreme heat as the single hazard that uniformly increases across all assets from the present-day to the short- and medium-terms. Other hazards were assessed as site-specific hazards with certain of such risks assessed as high in the present-day and remaining elevated through the medium-term period. In addition, the analysis identified potential transition risks for the organization, which included carbon pricing, mandates on efficiency and carbon emissions from existing products, and costs associated with a transition to lower carbon pathways. These potential risks increase from the present day through the short- and medium-terms with the magnitude of increase depending on scenario. Potential opportunity drivers were also identified, including enhanced business continuity and resilience planning, value-chain decarbonization, industry climate leadership, impact investing, and customer demand for sustainable products and solutions. Potential transition opportunities assessed include expanding global renewable energy capacity and adoption of additional energy-efficiency measures to reduce environmental impact and increase consumer confidence and favorability. Both opportunities show an increased magnitude of opportunity from the present day through the short- and medium-terms. Impact on business, strategy, and financial planning Our Double Materiality Assessment (DMA) identified impacts, risks, and opportunities (IROs) across GoDaddy's business operations encompassing a range of ESG topics. The DMA process and IRO list originated through engagement with GoDaddy management and subject matter experts. The business and external impacts were assessed through a materiality scoring aligned with GoDaddy's risk management system. This materiality scoring included financial, operational, reputational, compliance, and partnership components. The scoring was informed through physical and transition climate scenario analysis. The IRO scoring and materiality determination were reviewed by members of GoDaddy's management team. Scenario analysis and resiliency strategy In 2024, we engaged a third-party firm to carry out a qualitative scenario analysis to assess potential climate-related physical risks related to our data center operations and offices at an asset- level, both owned and leased, for present-day, short-, and medium-term time periods and for both lower and higher emission scenarios. Scenario analyses were also carried out for potential transition risks and opportunities for two future scenarios. Assessing three time periods and multiple climate scenarios provided information on the uncertainty and variability of potential climate-related risks and opportunities and their potential impacts on our sustainability strategies across different planning horizons. The scenarios chosen also provided lower and higher impact views on potential risks and opportunities, giving a fuller range of outcomes to inform decision making. The asset-level nature of the physical scenario analysis can also be used to inform adaptation and resilience planning for specific GoDaddy owned and leased sites. The approach to transition scenario analysis allows for updating of scenarios as global and regional policies evolve. Risk Management Process for identifying and assessing climate-related risks Our DMA included climate-related physical and transition risks. These risks were assessed through a materiality scoring process that considered likelihood and severity of impacts across various categories, including financial, operational, reputational, compliance, and partnerships to provide measures of inherent risk to which control and mitigation measures can be applied to determine levels of residual risk. The DMA process included the development of a comprehensive IRO register reflecting GoDaddy's most important potential risks, including those related to climate change. Process for managing risk Climate-related risks are managed by the ESG Team in collaboration with leaders from across the organization. These leaders are responsible for monitoring and responding to any specified risk that could impact the company's strategic or operational objectives. Integration into overall risk management Our ARC Team leads our enterprise risk management program. The ARC Team is responsible for identifying key risks that could impact the company's strategy, operations, or compliance. The ARC Team assists our Leadership Team in defining metrics to monitor such risks and respond proactively. GoDaddy's assessment of potential climate-related risk and opportunity leveraged standard criteria used in our risk management framework. Following GoDaddy's standard processes, potential climate-related risks that could impact the company's strategic or operational objectives are managed by the ESG Team in collaboration with leaders from relevant teams to monitor and respond to any specified risks.
