Abu Dhabi to host UAE's first Hyrox event — here's what to wear to it and why

This weekend, thousands of the UAE's fitness fans will descend on the capital's Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre for the emirate's first Hyrox event. The fitness race tests speed, stamina, endurance and — let's be honest — how fierce you can look in an Instagram post, while pushing a 100kg sled down a 50m track. Fuelled by social media arguably as much as amino acids, Hyrox might be billed as showing off what your muscles can achieve, but it's as much about showing off your actual muscles. In Australia, men have run (and won) the event in Speedo-style swim briefs. I'm not sanctioning such skimpy displays of strength in Abu Dhabi; however, that doesn't mean that participants can't elevate their Hyrox style to the height of their wall ball throws. With 8K of running interspersing the workout stations, functionality is as important as fashion when it comes to race day style, but there's no reason you should compromise on either. Here are my top fitness race buys to get your pulse racing: DATA ON POINT I've worn a Whoop since 2020‭ ‬—‭ ‬incidentally‭, ‬the same year the wearable fitness device alerted me to having Covid days before a test confirmed it‭. ‬Early iterations of the screen-free wearable tracked strain‭, ‬recovery‭, ‬and sleep in granular detail‭. ‬This year‭, ‬Whoop's 5.0‭ ‬edition adds ageing‭, ‬heart rhythm‭, ‬and blood pressure metrics for‭, ‬arguably‭, ‬the most accurate longevity-optimising personal data commercially available‭. ‬The device operates on a subscription model‭, ‬costing Dh1,379‭ ‬a year for Whoop's top-tier Life membership‭, ‬which offers all the new features‭. ‬Sweat in one of the standard knit bands‭, ‬then switch for a leather style to lift your fitness look outside of the gym‭.‬ SPEED SHOES With a Hyrox race incorporating running‭, ‬strength and agility‭, ‬you'll need a shoe that's lightweight‭, ‬stable and teched-up to give you a time advantage‭. ‬Some long-distance running shoes might be too bouncy for corner turns and won't offer enough stability for the sandbag lunges or hold traction on the sled stations‭, ‬while a CrossFit-style shoe is likely too‭ ‬stiff for the runs‭. ‬Puma‭, ‬an official Hyrox partner‭, ‬has engineered its Deviate Nitro 3‭ ‬shoes specifically for the demands of a‭ ‬Hyrox race‭. ‬The Elite edition features a full-length carbon plate to propel you through the eight 1k runs‭, ‬and frankly‭, ‬I'd take all the help‭ ‬I could get‭.‬ ATHLETIC AI Okay, so you can't get artificial intelligence (AI) to go to the gym for you, but we are starting to see how it will be harnessed in the fitness arena. Oakley's new athletically-styled Meta HSTN glasses play motivational music via the open-ear speakers, record race videos hands-free (and post them to your Stories), while its in-built AI assistant answers questions about your pace and performance. Think of them as the most personal of trainers. FIT KIT The average Hyrox competitor takes around an hour and a half to complete the course‭, ‬so your outfit needs to last the distance‭ (‬and look good on the winner's podium‭). ‬Dubai-based brand Allez Kit's hybrid workout top combines strong built-in support‭ (‬no need for a separate sports bra‭), ‬cooling fabric and a compressive construction to propel performance‭, ‬and was designed specifically for the combination of speed and strength that Hyrox entails‭. ‬Elaf‭ ‬Jamal wore it to take first place in the Hyrox Sharjah women's over 40s open doubles earlier this year‭, ‬and says‭: ‬'I felt like the prettiest woman in the world‭.‬'‭ ‬Also‭, ‬one of the fastest‭. ‬Puma's Hyrox-branded Cloudspun 3'‭ ‬shorts are a neat way to finish the look‭, ‬and monochrome styling matches the black-and-white winners'‭ ‬flags‭. FASHION FLEX There are gym bags‭, ‬and then there is Saint Laurent's jacquard logo duffle bag‭. ‬Its sporty styling is offset with an unapologetically bold logo that semaphores a fusion of fashion‭ ‬and fitness‭. ‬Just don't let your electrolyte drink leak all over the reassuringly expensive interior‭.‬‬ HEALTH GOALS Launched earlier this year to a flurry of Blend it Like Beckham headlines‭, ‬IM8's one-and-done daily supplement boasts 92‭ ‬ingredients‭, ‬was co-founded by David Beckham‭, ‬and developed with experts from the Mayo‭ ‬Clinic‭, ‬NASA‭, ‬and the University of Oxford‭. ‬Intended to replace the multitude of supplements that biohackers‭ (‬and Beckham‭) ‬find‭ ‬themselves knocking back each day‭, ‬the powdered drink covers all the essentials‭, ‬from hydration to gut health‭. ‬Also athlete-backed‭, ‬and with US military contracts to boot‭, ‬Momentous's‭ ‬'Fuel'‭ ‬sachets provide a carb and electrolyte mix for workouts lasting over 60‭ ‬minutes‭. ‬ HAUTE HYDRATION The most photogenic Hyrox race in the world took place in Paris's Grand Palais earlier this year, with competitors bathed in dappled sunlight filtering through the glass dome roof. Abu Dhabi, in July, may not be quite as compatible with the elements, but for a piece of je ne sais quoi along the course, Dior's 'Plan de Paris' water bottle maps out the city's streets, so while you're battling through the Farmer's Carry you can imagine the 16kg kettlebells are actually shopping bags laden with couture. PODIUM FINISH The women's Euros footballers favour a high pony, but the hairstyle of choice for Hyrox-style fitness races is a double French braid, which has the benefits of looking fierce, while staying put throughout gruelling exertion, impermeable to sweat. The fitness pros I know swear by Slick Stick as an alt to hairspray and kirby grips; a neat mascara wand for your hair that tames flyaways and keeps hairlines sleek and polished. To boost energy and support cell growth, a spoonful of Cymbiotika's Liposomal Vitamin B12 and B6 will rev up your reps, and once you've crossed the finish line a spray of The Neu Co.'s Magnesium Ease counteracts the build-up of lactic acid and calcium, ensuring post-race recovery.

How Paris Couture Week 2025 embraced inclusivity

In the aftermath of recent fashion missteps — most notably Prada's Spring/Summer 2026 presentation, which faced widespread criticism for its uncredited appropriation of traditional Kolhapuri sandals — and in the shadow of mounting global economic tensions aggravated by the fashion tariff wars, Paris Haute Couture Week returned this July under a cloud of heightened scrutiny. The question facing the industry was clear: would couture, the most elevated form of garment-making in the world, remain cloistered in its familiar sanctuaries of French and Italian elitism, or would it begin to expand its frame to accommodate the new, the regional, and the previously peripheral? The answer, while subtle, was unmistakable. This season's collections did not storm the gates of tradition with grand proclamations or flashy stunts; rather, they arrived with quiet confidence, the sort that comes not from spectacle but from clarity of vision. Among the legacy maisons — Dior with its Grecian silhouettes and feminist undertones, Schiaparelli with its surrealist motifs, and Chanel with its predictably polished restraint — it was the presence of regional designers from the Middle East and South Asia that lent the week a sense of momentum and emotional gravity. Marking what many have called a historic debut, Syrian-born, Dubai-based designer Rami Al Ali presented on the official Fédération de la Haute Couture calendar for the very first time, a recognition long overdue given his two-decade-long contribution to couture from the region. His Fall/Winter 2025 collection, showcased in an understated Parisian salon near Place Vendôme, was a tribute not only to refined construction and considered embellishment, but also to the architectural elegance of the Arab world — as former editor-in-chief of Madame Arabia Jessica Michault says: 'Perhaps this is because Syria is finally seeing the light after a long-wished regime change, or maybe it's just a designer creating from a place of contentment after finally getting the recognition he deserves from his peers.' Gowns flowed with mathematical pleating and hand-embroidered bodices that called to mind the geometry of Islamic tilework, rendered in a palette of deep navy, desert rose, and alabaster. The standout piece — a midnight blue gown crowned with a sculptural cape — was as much a testament to technical mastery as it was a gesture of regional pride. From Riyadh, Mohammed Ashi of Ashi Studio offered a body of work that continued his signature sculptural language, this time deepening it with a sense of serene monumentality. His collection, predominantly in hues of ivory and bone, presented gowns that appeared almost as if carved from alabaster, with austere silhouettes that revealed their complexity only upon closer inspection. Drawing inspiration from artists like Louise Bourgeois — whose fabric works echo mended, distressed bodies — Ashi's collection wove in layers of story: a conversation around skin, transparency, and emotional depth, positioned between exoticism and classicism, like a modern cabinet of curiosities. In a more traditionally romantic vein, Lebanon's enduring couture voices, Georges Hobeika and Zuhair Murad, returned with collections that felt less like red-carpet fare and more like cultural introspections. Hobeika's use of blush-toned tulle and layered organza, embellished with crystalised cable embroidery, echoed the folklore of Levantine femininity, while Murad's gowns, in shades of Tyrian purple and soft jade, retained their trademark glamour but were elevated by a restraint in silhouette and precision in surface detailing. One could not help but admire a Murad creation that featured a sheer corseted bodice paired with a waterfall of metallic-threaded silk — a piece that balanced opulence with an air of mythology. Quietly powerful Rahul Mishra, who has consistently carved a niche for his narrative-led couture, turned to Sufism for inspiration this season. His garments, woven with hand-embroidered medallions and nature motifs, unfolded like meditative chants — quietly powerful and rich in subtext. One robe-like dress, composed of hundreds of hours of handwork and bearing the gentle shimmer of moonlight grey, embodied this spirit with haunting beauty. Feedback from industry insiders was notably encouraging. Natalie Kingham, former fashion and buying director at MatchesFashion, commented on social media that this season, 'Rami's debut was an affirmation that haute couture can embrace geographies beyond Paris and Milan without compromise.' Meanwhile, fashion influencers attending from London, noted in a Threads post that 'it was the quieter presentations — Rahul Mishra and Schipparelli's, in particular — that held the room in a way that no gimmick could'. As Paris Couture Week 2025 drew to a close, it wasn't rupture or reinvention that defined the mood, but something far more enduring: relevance redefined. The week didn't rewrite the couture rulebook, but it did expand the margins, allowing new voices to shape the narrative without asking for permission. If Paris has long been the cathedral of couture, then this season proved the echo now travels well beyond its gilded halls. From Beirut and Mumbai to Riyadh and Delhi, the rhythm of haute couture feels fuller, deeper, and — at last — collectively authored.

Dubai: Japanese eatery Umi Kei is a tribute to tradition

It's official: I have found the chicest restaurant in Dubai. Umi Kei engulfed me in an instant sense of muted harmony, with soft lighting encased in gentle cedar and bamboo panels. The venue is centred on the overtly traditional sushi bar, complete with a display of the freshest and highest-grade fish Dubai has to offer, and surrounded by high chairs for those who wish to enjoy a more casual dining experience. We sat adjacent to the sushi bar and robata grill, ensuring we kept our eyes on all the action. As we discovered upon exploring the menu, Umi Kei is part of 'The Fore' — a network of four restaurants within the heart of Marsa Al Arab. This allowed us to order a delightful beverage from a neighbouring restaurant while pouring over the dishes available within Umi Kei. Our smart and passionate waitress talked us through the menu and the concept, and then took us through the daily 'fish market'. This was presented in a handai (traditional Japanese wooden bowl) and showcased a host of rare and delicious sea-born delights, including caviar, a whole squid, and lobster tails, among others. We proceeded to choose the lobster tail to be cooked on the robata grill for later in the meal. To start, we indulged in the fresh hamachi carpaccio, served atop a spicy, citrusy, buttery cream sauce and topped with a vast amount of finely chopped chives. Both simple and flavourful, this was an elegant start to an elegant meal. We also enjoyed the tempura shishito peppers, topped with a perfectly light shiso leaf. The fresh raw fish against the lightly battered peppers bounced off one another in a playful dance of flavours. From the dishes that followed, some of our favourites included the A5 wagyu, cooked to a perfect rare temperature on the fiery grill and served with togarashi seasoning. In true surf-and-turf fashion, this was served at the same time as the Hokkaido scallops. These were true stars — sat in a zesty cream and topped with chive oil and salmon roe, they embodied everything one would look for in such a dish: salty, sweet, and acidic. Following our main courses, the desserts continued to uphold the same level of flavour and impressiveness. The matcha cheesecake was rich and creamy, with gentle notes of high-grade matcha and not a hint of bitterness in sight. Overall, this restaurant offers diners a true sense of zen and can only be described as a minimalist haven that whispers tradition in every dish. Hero dish: The Hokkaido scallops were the perfect indulgence – 9/10 Senses: The low-lit‭, ‬effortlessly refined venue stirred happiness and pleasure in all‭ ‬—‭ ‬8/10 Menu curation: As serene and precision-led as every other aspect of the venue — 8/10 Jumeirah Marsa Al Arab‭, ‬Dubai‭, ‬800‭ ‬323232
