It's really something when photos of a secret car collection owned by a Sultan get people worked up because of a rare Holden in the midst of Bugattis, Ferraris, Lotuses, and other exotics. While most of the rest of the world was confused by the reaction from Australians and a smattering of others, once you know a little bit about the Holden Commodore which looks rather plain you too will get all the fuss made over it.The maroon sedan is in fact a 1990 HSV SS Group A Commodore is one of only 302 in existence. It's an homologation special that was canceled partway through the planned 500 unit build, thanks to rule changes in Group A racing in Bathurst.
Using a VN-series Commodore Berlina, HSV tweaked a 4.9-liter V8 and mated it with a six-speed manual from the C4 Corvette, making it the first Holden to use a six-speed. To sharpen handling, HSV lowered he Commodore, added Bilstein shocks, bolted in a limited-slip diff, upgraded the brakes, and wrapped the 17-inch alloy wheels with Goodyear Eagles.
All that combined to make the VN SS Group A Commodore the fastest production car from Australia in the early 90s. It was a red hot ride everyone wanted but few could have. Today, they can fetch several hundred thousand at auction.
Plus, for Australians the Holden is a type of hero car, a symbol of national pride created back when the island nation actually made cars.
Also kept in the Sultan of Brunei's impressive collection as show in photos leaked onto the internet are crowd favorites like Ferrari Testarossas and Lamborghini Countaches. He also owns a number of oddities like first-gen Toyota RAV4s and a Lotus Omega.
The royal family of Brunei, a miniscule country located in Southeast Asia, are often cited as the wealthiest of royalty in the world today. Thanks to that financial might, the sultan has amassed a car collection estimated to be worth $5 billion.
Considering he has about 7,000 vehicles in storage, that's a believable yet still staggering sum.

BYD rival XPENG 'building momentum' in Australia, earthquake rocks Perth, cops bust 'fake' pink slips

Hello and welcome to Yahoo's live news blog. BYD's Chinese EV rival XPENG says it is ramping up its presence in Australia by shipping in 1,000 more electric SUVs following what it says is strong demand for their vehicles. Residents in Perth have been woken by a 4.8 magnitude earthquake overnight. The quake was about 180km east of WA's capital and occurred shortly after 2am (AWST). Follow along as we bring you regular updates throughout the day. BYD rival XPENG says it is 'building momentum' in Australia You've most likely heard about BYD and their huge surge in popularity in Australia. But another Chinese EV brand says its also making a big impact over here. XPENG says it is sending over 1,000 electric SUVs from August thanks to "growing demand". 'XPENG is at the frontier of AI and smart driving, and Australian drivers are responding to that in a big way," Jason Clarke, CEO of TrueEV, the company which exclusively imports the vehicles to Australia. While Chinese EVs offer a cheaper alternative to other leading brands like Tesla, experts are warning for Australians to do their homework as more and more Chinese brands enter the market. "There's going to be a lot of cars to pick from but be careful which car you're buying, because with so many brands coming to Australia, you might buy something that's great value today, but that brand may not exist in five or 10 years time," founder Paul Maric told Yahoo Finance this month. UK to recognise Palestinian if war doesn't end UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer will recognise a Palestinian state if Israel does not end the crisis in Gaza. The UK would refrain from recognising a Palestinian state if Israel allows more aid into Gaza, stops annexing land in the West Bank, agrees to a ceasefire and signs up to a long-term peace process over the next two months, Starmer said. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reacted angrily to the announcement, saying it was rewarding 'Hamas's monstrous terrorism'. There are increased calls for Australia to follow suit, with France earlier this week also recognising a Palestinian state. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese reacted angrily to claims from Netanyahu who said there was no starvation in Gaza. Perth residents woken by 4.8 magnitude earthquake Residents in Perth have been woken to a magnitude 4.8 earthquake which struck a regional town east of WA's capital. Geoscience Australia says the earthquake started near the town of Wyalkatchem in Western Australia's Wheatbelt region, at 2am (AWST). The earthquake was felt across southwestern WA, as far west as Perth about 200km away and even 436km away in the outback town of Kalgoorlie. Geoscience Australia's Senior Seismologist Dr Trevor Allen said the earthquake appeared to have been 'felt extensively' and there could well be damage to buildings. Classic Chrysler Proves It's Tougher Than Modern Cars

Read the full story on Backfire News A classic Chrysler New Yorker that was rear-ended by a modern car demonstrated they don't make them like they used to. The owner took to social media to share the aftermath of the crash, which shows the front end of the newer vehicle demolished and the classic taking seemingly no the old Chrysler lost its rear license plate and the plastic holder. But the bumper and everything else on it looks just fine. But the other car, which is something like a Dodge Dart or Toyota Corolla – it's really hard to tell at this point – had its front end crumpled like an accordion. We know newer vehicles are designed with crumple zones, so the modern sedan did what it was supposed to. That keeps the energy from the impact reaching the people inside the vehicle, at least to a point, reducing the likelihood of injuries. But the owner of the Chrysler doesn't mention even a sore neck or back from the collision. Instead, the Facebook post about the crash reads as follows: 'So, how's your day going ? I was just driving home from company picnic… Cop said 'they don't make them like they used to..' when he saw the 'damage' on my 1973 Chrysler New Yorker : the license plate fell off.' People had plenty of jokey replies to the post about the Chrysler 'eating' the other vehicle or the modern car being the New Yorker's crumple zone. However, some believe the photos are some sort of 'setup' to make it look like the classic car wasn't damaged in the crash that creamed the other ride. We suppose they believe this is some conspiracy of the classic automobile industry or some such nonsense. But we know from experience the right modern trucks and SUVs would've held up similarly to the classic Chrysler. Part of it has to do with how the vehicle is constructed. If you know, you know.
