Protect Your Heart With This Simple Blood Test Doctors Want You To Know About
Heart attacks strike without warning, but what if you could assess your risk in advance? Cardiologist Dr. Dmitry Yaranov has highlighted a simple blood test that could help predict the likelihood of a heart attack. In a post shared on June 16, he explained how this test works and offered tips on protecting your heart health. So, what is this potentially life-saving test? Let's find out.
The cardiologist said that the blood test is called C-reactive protein (CRP). 'The blood test that could save your life – and it's not cholesterol. CRP exposes silent inflammation that damages your arteries before you feel a single symptom. Most people have no idea their CRP is high – until it's too late. Even with 'normal' cholesterol, you could still be at risk. This is the kind of info that saves lives," he wrote, adding that even with normal cholesterol, having a high CRP would mean high risk.
Take a look at the post here.
Dr. Yaranov highlighted CRP as a key marker of silent inflammation, one that could play a vital role in identifying hidden heart attack risks. He said, 'CRP, or C-reactive protein, is produced by the liver in response to inflammation. Chronic inflammation can lead to blood vessel damage, significantly increasing the risk of heart attack and stroke."
Why Does CRP Matter?
According to Dr. Yaranov, elevated CRP levels are associated with increased risk of:
Heart attack
Stroke
Narrowed arteries (atherosclerosis)
Peripheral artery disease
Measuring CRP
For a comprehensive risk assessment, Dr. Yaranov recommends combining the hs-CRP test with cholesterol and Lp(a) [Lipoprotein(a)] blood tests. Here's how to interpret your hs-CRP results:
By understanding your CRP levels and combining them with other key markers, you can gain a clearer picture of your cardiovascular health and take proactive steps to reduce your risk.
How Can We Lower CRP?
Dr. Yaranov shares actionable tips to reduce inflammation and lower CRP levels:
Nourish your heart: Focus on a heart-healthy, anti-inflammatory diet rich in whole foods, fruits and vegetables.
Get moving: Engage in regular physical activity to boost cardiovascular health.
Achieve a healthy weight: Shedding excess weight can help reduce inflammation and CRP levels.
Quit smoking: This would significantly lower your cardiovascular risk.
Explore treatment options: Consult your doctor about statins or other therapies that may help.
In addition, he emphasises that inflammation is a silent threat, but CRP testing can reveal hidden risks. Take charge of your heart health. Ask your doctor about your CRP levels and start your journey towards a healthier heart.

Researchers develop oral capsule to control gut bacteria via mobile app
New Delhi, Jul 28 (PTI) Researchers have developed an orally ingestible capsule that can be used to control gut bacteria via a smartphone app, showcasing a potential for digitally monitoring health and a remotely-controllable intervention, they said. The team from Tianjin University and other institutes in China trialled the capsule in pigs with colon inflammation. In a paper published in the journal Nature Microbiology, the researchers have described how it can help control and allow for a two-way communication with gut bacteria. Gastrointestinal bacteria, such as Escherichia coli (E. coli), are known to impact health. E. coli can be modified to deliver drugs to a specific site inside animals, the team explained. However, once inside, the bacteria cannot be controlled, nor can it be communicated with, they said. For the study, the authors engineered E. coli to communicate with a 'smart" capsule using light. The capsule, featuring a circuit board and powered by batteries, was developed as an oral ingestible. Three pigs, that were induced with colitis — an inflammation of the colon, were colonised with the engineered gut bacteria that emitted light upon detecting nitrate, a biomarker that indicates colitis. The pigs ingested the smart capsule, which detected the light emitted by the engineered gut bacteria and relayed it to a smartphone app that connects to the capsule via bluetooth, the researchers said. Through the app, the team directed the capsule to emit light by flashing an LED (light-emitting diode), which then turned on a light-sensitive genetic circuit in the engineered E. coli. The genetic circuit triggered the production of anti-inflammatory antibodies that alleviated colitis, the authors said. By improving control over how an engineered bacteria behaves inside a living organism, the technology could boost the precision of diagnoses and therapies that make use of microbes, the team said. They added that further refinement to support multiple rounds of communication and clinical testing could one day allow for its application in treating human diseases. The authors wrote, 'As a proof of concept, we engineered E. coli Nissle 1917 to detect infammation-associated nitric oxide in the pig gut and generate a bioluminescent signal for diagnosis of colitis." 'This approach highlights the potential for integrating synthetic biology and optoelectronics for digital health monitoring and controllable intervention," they wrote. 22 nurses receive Best Nursing Personnel awards in Chennai
Chennai, Jul 28 (PTI) As many as 22 nurses received the Best Nursing Personnel and Lifetime Achievement awards 2025 during the centenary celebrations of the Tamil Nadu Nurses and Midwives Council here on Monday. Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin, who presented the awards, also inaugurated the centenary celebrations of TNNMC. He released the logo of the council on the occasion. Over 2.5 lakh members of the TNNMC were engaged in medical service not only in Tamil Nadu but also all over the world, he said. 'From being the foundation of the rural health system, to serving as the frontline warriors who save humanity in times of pandemic, disaster, and war, nurses are always worthy of admiration," the Deputy CM said in a post on the social media platform 'X'. Speaking after giving away the awards, Udhayanidhi said the presence of nurses gave one a great sense of self-confidence and security because every child born in the world sees the face of the nurse before he/she sees his own mother. The role of nurses was unique and cannot be forgotten, he said, and lauded their service. 'You all know that our Chief Minister (M K Stalin), who was admitted in hospital, returned home yesterday. I express my gratitude to the doctors, and most importantly, the nurses like you," Udhayanidhi said. He recalled that the council was started during the rule of the Justice Party, precursor to the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, in 1926. Similar to the nursing community, which vaccinated people from diseases, the Dravidian movement leaders like Periyar Ramasamy, and former Chief Ministers: C N Annadurai and M Karunanidhi, went from village to village to spread rational ideas to solve the diseases that gripped society. Health Minister Ma Subramanian, Chennai Mayor R Priya, TNNMC Registrar S Ani Grace Kalaimathi, and others spoke.
