Exclusive! Genelia Deshmukh on the role of South cinema in shaping her career and her thoughts on love stories

Genelia Deshmukh
After over a decade of consciously stepping back from the spotlight following the 2012 release of Tere Naal Love Ho Gaya to focus on family life,
Genelia Deshmukh
is embracing a new chapter — one shaped by motherhood, maturity, and a rekindled love for cinema.
In a conversation with BT, the actress, who was recently seen in Sitaare Zameen Par, opens up about evolving with time, the role of South cinema in shaping her career, and why mature roles need more screen time.
'Riteish and I continue to do things that we always enjoyed doing together'
Genelia, who has been married to Riteish Deshmukh for 13 years, says marriage evolves with time. She shares, 'A lot changes post marriage.
People forget that you're going to change at 30, 40 and 50. You're not going to be 20 all your life, and I think that's the issue in most relationships. You expect the person to stay the way they were at 16. Riteish and I know we aren't in our 20s, but we continue to do things that we always enjoyed doing together.
We liked going out for dinners a lot, but with children around, it gets tough. So, once a week, we go to a coffee shop, hold hands and talk.

'Earlier, the perception was that Bollywood dropouts make it big in the South'
Today, pan-India films are seeing actors from Bollywood being cast alongside South actors. Genelia, who made her film debut in 2003 with Tujhe Meri Kasam, did South films from the early days of her career. About the current pan-India trend, she says, 'I don't know why it took so long. I did it very early in my career, and I did it with pride.
I just wanted to do good films; it was never about pitching one above the other. Earlier, the perception was that Bollywood dropouts make it big in the South.
I've done some of my best work there. I thought my first film would be my last, and then I would take up a 9-5 job. But then I got a lot of work in the South and started falling in love with acting because of South cinema.'
Talking about her break from movies, she says, 'During the last 10 years, I did special appearances whenever my friends asked me to.
I also did Trial Period, which was an OTT project and Mister Mummy. I am happy that a film like Sitaare Zameen Par came my way.'
'I'm a different person now, but I still have that madness in me'
Genelia admits that this phase of her career feels different from her early years in the industry. 'I'm a different person now, but I still have that madness in me. I'll always want to keep the child in me alive. At the start of your career, you have to make sure you do things that really work. Now, I want to do a horror film.
I want to do action. It all depends on what filmmakers are writing and what you are being offered,' she says.
'
Love stories
aren't just for the young'
The actress is hopeful the industry keeps pace with changing narratives and embraces more mature female characters. She says, 'I wish we would write more stories about women who are in their 30s, 40s or 50s. There are so many dynamics to that, which is interesting. Love stories aren't just for the young. Why isn't there a love story of a 30-year-old girl or a single mother? Love doesn't happen only when you are in college.
I don't think I could play a good mom on screen if I weren't a mom in real life. I think you bring nuances to the screen when you actually live it. Which is why I say that actors should be cast as per the demand of the role and not because of their Instagram following or because they are number one, two or three.'

Nasser reacts to failure of Kamal Haasan and Mani Ratnam's Thug Life; blames social media: ‘After the movie released on OTT…'

Despite arriving riding high on a wave of massive hype, as it marked the reunion of director Mani Ratnam and actor-filmmaker Kamal Haasan after their landmark film Nayakan (1987), the gangster drama Thug Life was widely panned and ended up becoming a box office disaster. Not only did it fail to meet the expectations of fans and general moviegoers, but the movie also turned into a meme goldmine, ultimately becoming a cinematic 'disasterpiece'. Mounted on a massive budget, the film's cast and crew featured some of the biggest names in the Indian entertainment industry, including Oscar-winning composer AR Rahman, actors Silambarasan TR and Trisha Krishnan, multiple national award-winning editor A Sreekar Prasad, and cinematographer extraordinaire Ravi K Chandran. Hence, the movie's debacle — and, by extension, its purported poor quality — not only shocked many but also left a mark on all involved. Now, veteran actor-filmmaker Nasser, who played a key role in the gangster drama, has reacted to Thug Life's underperformance. Expressing that he 'felt very bad' seeing the movie's fate, the thespian blamed 'self-proclaimed' film critics on social media for the result. Nasser also mentioned that many viewers contacted him after the movie's OTT premiere, commending Thug Life and expressing sadness over not having caught the film in theatres, a decision they apparently made based on reading online reviews. 'In my 40-year career, during which I have done about 700 movies, I have always tried to remain detached from my films (and their outcomes). Many films in which I performed well didn't reach audiences, and such things happen. So, I maintain my detachment. However, Thug Life was something personal. Here, I was working with the team that made me popular and successful and provided a turning point in my career. On the first day on set, I was blushing. It felt like I had gone back 40 years,' he shared in an exclusive conversation with SCREEN. Although Nasser made his acting debut in legendary director K Balachander's Kalyana Agathigal (1985) and appeared in a handful of movies after that, it was Mani and Kamal's epic crime drama Nayakan that put the actor on the map and propelled his career to new heights. Some of his most acclaimed characters were also in films headlined by Mani or Kamal, such as Thevar Magan, Bombay, Roja, Iruvar, Anbe Sivam, Ponniyin Selvan, and Magalir Mattum. Mentioning that everyone who worked on the movie put their heart and soul into it, he added, 'I saw Kamal sir, a professional actor, handled by another professional (Mani). It was not about friendship. Kamal sir was open to taking any decision made by Mani Ratnam.' He further stated that this was the first time in a long while that he had worked on a movie with rehearsals beforehand. 'After the arrival of digital cinema, there are almost no rehearsals. But Kamal sir was rehearsing. He wanted to go further and further. So, the process of making the film was very warm and special. Hence, when it was not received well, I felt very bad.' Offering his thoughts on why the movie underperformed, the actor-filmmaker reflected, 'I think social media played a significant role in this. We don't have proper critics on social media, where anyone can become one. After the movie was released on OTT, many people called me and said, 'Hey macha, it's a very good film. I don't know why it bombed.' So, social media contributed to why it wasn't received well at first.' He added, 'Also, I guess, people expected too much since it marked the reunion of Mani Ratnam and Kamal Haasan. But while working, we did so with all our heart and soul. We completely enjoyed making the film. Of course, when it comes to movies, you cannot determine the results. But I felt very… not sad, but uncomfortable when I heard that the film was not doing well. However, now it's getting more credit after people started watching it on OTT.' Anandu Suresh is a Deputy Copy Editor at Indian Express Online. IVE unveils darker side in 'Evil Cupid' trailer for upcoming album 'IVE Secret'

IVE's Scret Cupid The beloved K-pop girl group IVE, famous for their upbeat tracks, has just unleashed a trailer that's sparking all kinds of chatter. Dropped by Starship Entertainment on YouTube, it showcases the 'Evil Cupid' theme for their fourth mini album, 'IVE Secret'. Ditching the usual hearts and blooms, the members dive into hidden mischief, like casually dropping tumblers with a sly smirk or yanking a revolver from a Cupid handbook. This vibe shift goes beyond looks; it's a smart play on duality, mixing lighthearted fun with shadowy undertones in a way that feels totally fresh. In the bright daylight scenes, the girls beam with cheerful grins, but there's this subtle chill hinting at Cupid's secretive other side. It's building suspense like those edge-of-your-seat thriller shows we can't stop watching, drawing you in deeper with every frame. Adding to the intrigue, the trailer weaves in symbolic elements that suggest deeper stories, making you wonder what's really bubbling under the surface of their polished personas. Dark Vibes and Fiery Moves As the trailer ramps up, the mood switches dramatically. IVE's members take aim at unicorns with revolvers (yeah, it's as bizarre as it sounds) or set paper cranes ablaze, shedding the pure romance image for a dash of rebellious flair. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like U.S. Cardiologist Warns About Blueberries For Breakfast Gundry MD Learn More Undo Emerging from the shadows in sleek black outfits, they tease bits of the upcoming songs. The title track 'XOXZ' along with the rest spotlight contrasts like surface charm clashing with hidden chaos, or the blend of light and dark within the group dynamic. It's that clever commentary on how we all juggle different sides of ourselves, delivered with a wink and a nod that makes the whole thing irresistibly fun. Imagine the members channeling this energy live - it'd be a performance full of surprises, keeping fans guessing from start to finish.
