Rahul Gandhi's photo on sanitary pads in Bihar: JD-U slams Congress for 'ideological bankruptcy'

New Delhi: Congress party's unique women-centric initiative and public outreach via sanitary pads has sparked controversy in the poll-bound Bihar, with political parties reacting sharply to what they called 'weird' attempt to woo voters.
The ruling Janata Dal (United) launched a tirade at the grand old party for politicizing issues sensitive to women and called it an example of its ideological bankruptcy.
The criticism was triggered by a photograph of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi featuring prominently on sanitary pad packets, being distributed under the party's Priyadarshini Udaan Yojana, aimed at raising menstrual hygiene awareness among women in Bihar.
The Congress launched the initiative as part of a larger campaign for women voters in the state. The party claimed that over 5 lakh sanitary pad boxes will be distributed, with an aim to address menstrual health, break social taboos, and also spread awareness across rural and urban areas alike.
However, JD-U spokesperson Neeraj Kumar strongly criticised the Congress over the move.
"What has happened to the Congress Party?" he asked, calling the strategy a shallow electoral gimmick.
'Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has been working continuously to empower the daughters and sisters of state, to empower them and to build a robust landscape for their overall development. The election year has come; daughters, women are a symbol of respect and honour, but you, in an arrogant display of power, put your face on it (sanitary pads),' he said, slamming the use of Rahul Gandhi's image on the sanitary pads.
Neeraj Kumar further said the Congress's alliance with a party like the RJD has led to such political missteps.
'It shows, in politics, what is called ideological bankruptcy or lack of intellect. Not understanding the situation, or, naturally, the outcomes of being with a party like RJD, which is known for its political misdeeds, the effect of that co-operation was seen.'
The sanitary pad distribution is part of the party's Priyadarshini Udaan Yojana, under which the Congress claims to be advocating for menstrual hygiene and awareness.
In addition, the party has unveiled the Mai Bahin Maan Yojana, a flagship welfare scheme for the economic empowerment for women.
Under the Mai Bahin Maan Yojana, the Congress promises to provide Rs 2,500 per month directly into the bank accounts of economically disadvantaged women, if the Mahagathbandhan (Grand Alliance) forms the government in Bihar.

Baghel visits site hit by tree felling for coal mine in Raigarh

Raipur: AICC General Secretary and former Chhattisgarh Chief minister Bhupesh Baghel , along with over 20 Congress MLAs, visited Tamnar in Raigarh district to assess concerns over large-scale tree felling in the region, linked to a coal mine project of a private mining operator. During the visit, Baghel met villagers who claimed to face police action while protesting the environmental impact of the project. Baghel expressed concern over the manner in which the state's natural resources—such as land, forests, water, and minerals—were being made available for industrial use. He alleged that deforestation activities were carried out under pressure, without the consent of local gram sabhas. He also raised issues related to the treatment of tribal residents protesting the project. He pointed out that extensive tree felling began during the previous BJP-led state govt's tenure and that the current administration continued the trend. Referring to the Hasdeo Aranya region, Baghel claimed more than 50,000 trees were already cut. Citing official communication, he mentioned a letter dated Oct 31, 2022, from the state's Forest Department requesting the Centre to halt coal mining activities in the Parsa block and to withdraw tree felling proposals. He added that the previous Congress govt passed a resolution in the Assembly urging cancellation of all coal blocks in ecologically sensitive areas, including Hasdeo Aranya.

‘Never heard that': Donald Trump says he's unaware ‘shylock' is considered anti-Semitic; faces backlash

US President Donald Trump said early Friday that he didn't realize the term 'Shylock' is considered antisemitic by some people. He had used the word during a rally to criticize certain bankers while discussing his newly passed tax cut and spending legislation, a comment that drew widespread criticism. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now 'I've never heard it that way. To me, Shylock is somebody that's a money lender at high rates,' Trump spoke to reporters after stepping off Air Force One. 'I've never heard it that way, you view it differently than me. I've never heard that.' T rump was heading back to Washington after the event in Iowa that marked the start of nationwide celebrations for the country's 250th anniversary, which will take place next year. In his speech, he used the word while highlighting parts of the major domestic policy bill that Congress had passed just a few hours earlier. "Think of that: No death tax. No estate tax. No going to the banks and borrowing from, in some cases, a fine banker - and in some cases, Shylocks and bad people,' he said during remarks at an Iowa rally. The term 'Shylock' comes from the character in William Shakespeare's play The Merchant of Venice. In the play, Shylock is a Jewish moneylender known for being harsh and demanding, famously insisting on a 'pound of flesh' from a merchant named Antonio if a loan wasn't repaid. "The term 'Shylock' evokes a centuries-old antisemitic trope about Jews and greed that is extremely offensive and dangerous. President Trump's use of the term is very troubling and irresponsible," the Anti-Defamation League said in a post on X. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now 'It underscores how lies and conspiracies about Jews remain deeply entrenched in our country. Words from our leaders matter and we expect more from the President of the United States,' the organisation added. US Representative Dan Goldman, a Jewish Democrat, said, "This is blatant and vile antisemitism, and Trump knows exactly what he's doing." Amy Spitalnick, CEO of the Jewish Council for Public Affairs, said in a post on social media, 'Shylock is among the most quintessential antisemitic stereotypes. This is not an accident. It follows years in which Trump has normalized antisemitic tropes and conspiracy theories - and it's deeply dangerous.'
