SingTel posts 9pct annual profit rise, unveils US$1.5 billion buyback plan

KUALA LUMPUR: Singapore Telecommunications reported a 9 per cent rise in annual profit on Thursday, driven by solid performances from its Optus unit and regional associate Airtel, and announced a S$2 billion (US$1.55 billion) share buyback over the next three years.
SingTel, Southeast Asia's largest telecom firm, said its underlying net profit for the full year ended March 31 was S$2.47 billion, up from S$2.26 billion a year earlier, but slightly below the Visible Alpha consensus estimate of S$2.56 billion.
Optus reported a 5.7 per cent growth in full-year earnings due to improved core mobile performance.
Post-tax contributions from the company's associates grew 13 per cent, mainly driven by India's Bharti Airtel, which nearly doubled its quarterly profit on higher tariffs and subscriber growth.
"Notwithstanding the company's encouraging performance, macroeconomic and geopolitical uncertainties caused by volatility in tariff policies persist," CEO Yuen Kuan Moon said in a statement.
While tariffs have no direct impact on the company's business, which is primarily in services, the trade conflict could affect it indirectly through softer consumer and business sentiment, SingTel said.
The telecoms firm expects earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT), excluding contributions from associates, to grow in high-single digits in fiscal 2026. Its EBIT grew 20 per cent in fiscal year 2025.
After selling a 1.2 per cent stake in Airtel for S$2 billion last week, SingTel said it has surpassed half of its S$6 billion mid-term asset recycling target and has now raised the goal to S$9 billion.
"The progress we've made in our ongoing capital management puts us in a position to return more to shareholders," CEO Moon said.
The company declared a final dividend of 10 Singapore cents per share, higher than 9.8 cents declared last year.

Press Metal expected to post higher Q2 profit

KUALA LUMPUR: Press Metal Aluminium Holdings Bhd is expected to register higher net profit for its upcoming second quarter (Q2) of 2025, driven by the easing alumina price, said RHB Research. Press Metal is expected to announce its Q2 2025 results on Aug 21. RHB Research expects Press Metal's core earnings to grow quarter-on-quarter (QoQ) to RM480-RM520 million, albeit below its estimates. This will be mainly driven by the alumina price easing to US$350 per tonne. The firm said this takes its alumina-to-aluminium cost ratio to 14 per cent, below the three year historical average of 18 per cent. "However, this may be offset by the lower Q2 2025 London Metal Exchange(LME) price of US$2,446 per tonne and Main Japanese Port or MJP premium of US$127 per tonne. "Year-on-year (YoY), we expect to see somewhat mixed earnings, as lower alumina costs (19 per cent YoY) would be offset by softer LME and higher carbon anode prices," it said. While the recent 90-day delay in the US tariff escalation against China does not directly impact Press Metal, RHB Research said it should alleviate near-term downside risks to China's economy and industrial demand. Since China consumes 55-60 per cent of the world's aluminium, it said the delay should lend support to LME prices moving forward. "The tariff delay may result in a stronger ringgit, which is a slight negative, in our view, as over 90 per cent of Press Metal products are exported. "Based on our sensitivity analysis, a two per cent appreciation in the ringgit could lower earnings by an estimated five per cent, assuming no hedging is done," it said. For the rest of 2025, RHB Research expects aluminium prices to be relatively stable, supported by subsiding geopolitical uncertainties. "All in, we cut financial years 2025 to 2027 earnings by 11 per cent, nine per cent and 11 per cent after accounting for FX assumptions and depreciation rates as well as tweaking alumina cost assumptions slightly by three per cent, to be more conservative."

Copper range-bound as investors navigate mixed market signals

BEIJING: Copper prices traded in a tight range on Tuesday, with traders remaining cautious as mixed market signals cast a shadow over the direction. A stronger U.S. dollar remained a drag for the base metals complex, as it makes commodities priced in the greenback more expensive for buyers using other currencies. Traders are still closely monitoring prospects for the Federal Reserve's rate cuts. However, hopes of stronger seasonal demand in top consumer China lingered, supporting prices of the red metal used in power and construction sectors. The most-traded copper contract on the Shanghai Futures Exchange closed daytime trade 0.16 per cent lower at 78,890 yuan (US$10,985.02) per metric ton. The benchmark three-month copper on the London Metal Exchange, however, added 0.36 per cent to US$9,769 a ton, as of 0725 GMT. Copper markets will be closely watching EU and U.S. manufacturing Purchasing Managers Index (PMI) data releases due on Thursday. Softer numbers will reinforce current demand concerns while any upside surprises could provide short-lived support, analysts at consultancy Benchmark Mineral Intelligence (BMI) said in a note. China's imports of refined copper remained weak due to unfavourable arbitrage between SHFE and LME warehouses, BMI analysts said, expecting the import premium to continue at a low level as domestic copper production keeps increasing. Additionally, output in Peru, the world's third-largest copper producer, rose 7.1 per cent year-on-year in June, thanks to the robust increase at the MMG-controlled Las Bambas mines. However, China's latest pledge to continue boosting consumption reignited demand hopes. SHFE aluminium dipped 0.22 per cent, nickel dropped 0.37 per cent, zinc shed 0.69 per cent while lead advanced 0.21 per cent and tin climbed 0.46 per cent. LME aluminium fell 0.48 per cent, nickel lost 0.11 per cent, zinc ticked down 0.04 per cent while lead gained 0.66 per cent and tin advanced 0.68 per cent.

Intel gets US$2 billion lifeline in the form of SoftBank equity investment

NEW YORK: Intel is getting a US$2 billion capital injection from SoftBank Group in a major vote of confidence for the troubled US chipmaker that is in the middle of a turnaround effort. The equity investment, announced by the two companies on Monday, is a lifeline for the once-iconic US chipmaker which has struggled to compete after years of management blunders that left it with virtually no foothold in the booming artificial intelligence chip industry. It will make SoftBank a top-10 shareholder of Intel and add to the Japanese tech investor's ambitious bet on artificial intelligence that includes the US$500 billion Stargate US data center project. The deal follows media reports last week that the US government may buy a stake in Intel, after a meeting between new CEO Lip-Bu Tan and President Donald Trump that was sparked by the President's demand for Tan's resignation over his ties to Chinese firms. SoftBank's decision to invest in Intel is not connected to Trump, a person familiar with the matter told Reuters. The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment. "This strategic investment reflects our belief that advanced semiconductor manufacturing and supply will further expand in the United States, with Intel playing a critical role," SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son said in a statement. It will pay US$23 per Intel share, a slight discount to Monday's closing price of US$23.66. SoftBank's investment will come via a primary issuance of common stock by Intel, and, based on the US company's market capitalisation at close of trading on Monday, represent an equity stake of just under 2 per cent, an Intel spokesperson said. The Japanese company would become the sixth largest investor in Intel, according to LSEG data. SoftBank shares dropped more than 5 per cent on Tuesday following the announcement, while Intel surged 5.6 per cent in after-market hours trading. The Japanese company will only take an equity stake in Intel and will neither seek a board seat nor commit to buying Intel's chips, the person familiar with the matter said. MULTIPLE CHALLENGES Intel has struggled financially and recorded an annual loss of US$18.8 billion in 2024, its first such loss since 1986, as it grapples with multiple challenges. Its longtime rival AMD has been gaining share in Intel's mainstay personal computer and server semiconductor markets, while its ambitious and costly plan for a chip contracting business that rivals that of Taiwan's TSMC has failed to take off. The company is now considering a significant change to its contract chip manufacturing business to win major customers, Reuters reported last month, in a potentially expensive shift from its previous strategies. "Intel's dual role as designer and manufacturer/fabricator uniquely positions it as potentially the best platform in the US to compete with TSMC," said Charu Chanana, chief investment strategist at Saxo. Bloomberg News reported earlier on Monday that the US government is in talks to take a 10 per cent stake in Intel. SoftBank declined to provide more details on the Intel investment when asked to comment by Reuters. The Intel funding is the latest in the Japanese company's run of mammoth investment announcements in 2025, which include committing US$30 billion to ChatGPT maker OpenAI as well as leading the financing for Stargate. On Monday Taiwan's Foxconn said it plans to manufacture data centre equipment with SoftBank at the Taiwanese firm's former electric vehicle factory in Ohio as part of the Stargate project.
