The unique 'Banksy-like' castle where graffiti has taken over in the heart of Scotland
Scotland's castles, with their old stone structures and towering turrets, are a major draw for tourists.
However, one historic castle stands out from the rest due to its vibrantly colourful walls, earning it comparisons to world renowned graffiti artist Banksy.
Kelburn Estate, located in Largs, in North Ayrshire, is already famous for its stunning woodlands, often ranked among Scotland's most picturesque.
The estate's castle, constructed in the 13th century, holds the distinction of being the oldest in Scotland to have been continuously inhabited by the same family - the Boyle family, whose head of the family is otherwise known as the Earl of Glasgow.
What sets this castle apart is its unique adornment of Brazilian graffiti, which has led to the mural being named as one of the world's top 10 examples of street art by author and designer Tristan Manco.
This places it in the same league as Banksy's work in Los Angeles and the Favela Morro Da Providencia in Rio de Janeiro.
In 2007, experts advised the Boyle family that the castle's concrete facing would eventually need replacement to prevent further damage to the stonework.
Inspired by his children, the Earl of Glasgow invited four Brazilian artists - Nunca, Nina and the Os Gemeos twins - to paint the castle walls, reports the Scottish Daily Express.
Historic Environment Scotland (HES) had approved the project with the caveat that the graffiti would be removed when Kelburn Castle underwent re-harling.

However, thanks to its feature on BBC's Culture Show and the documentary 'Crisis at the Castle', which highlighted the financial burdens of maintaining the castle, the graffiti gained significant attention.
Upon completion, it became a sensation across the nation, leading to Lord Glasgow being granted permission to retain the mural permanently.
The castle's south side is now a canvas of vibrant colours enveloping its walls and turrets, the result of collaborating artists living within the castle for a month to conceive their plan.
During his appeal to Historic Environment Scotland, The Earl of Glasgow pressed his case: "In the three years that the mural has been on the castle it has attracted enormous interest from around the world and it is loved by everyone who sees it. It has become a landmark and a talking point and it has given the castle and the estate a whole new character."
The mural showcases a series of intertwined cartoons in vivid, surreal colours showcasing urban cultural icons and fantastical scenes. Yet this unique castle is not the sole draw to Kelburn, located merely 50 minutes from Glasgow by car or about two hours from Edinburgh.
Kelburn is accessible from Easter until October, promising visitors more than just impressive and imaginative wall art.
Additionally, there's a picturesque woodland glen next to the Waterfall Pool, nestled within a sandstone grotto. A hike to the top of the glen rewards you with breathtaking views across the Firth of Clyde and towards the Isle of Arran.

EastEnders' Lily Slater (Lillia Turner) and Amy Mitchell (Ellie Dadd) are appalled when they become the latest women to be verbally abused by twisted teenager Joel Marshall (Max Murray). Joel has exhibited some disgusting behaviour since arriving in Walford earlier this year, having recorded himself and Avani Nandra-Hart (Aaliyah James) having sex without her consent, before sexually harassing a passenger on the tube. His dad Ross Marshall (Alex Walkinshaw) has been incapable of getting a handle on his son's misogyny, and recent scenes saw Joel turn his attention to Stacey Slater (Lacey Turner). After she publicly called out sick comments he made about her and daughter Lily in The Vic, he leaked intimate images from Stacey's Secret Cam account. With Stacey's daughter Lily having since arrived back in Walford after spending time with her biological father Ryan Malloy (Neil McDermott), she finds herself on the receiving end of Joel's vile words next week. As Lily catches up with her pal Amy at the café, they are interrupted by Joel, who says some offensive things. Amy and Lily fight back and call him out, which causes Joel to lose it. Rylan Clark says 'I'm very happy' in surprise relationship update
The TV personality shared a huge relationship update, adding that he wants to have children. TV personality Rylan Clark has revealed that he's "very happy", announcing that he has a new partner. He also added that he and his boyfriend are eager to start a family together. Rylan split with his ex-husband Dan Neal back in 2021 and his romantic life has been the subject of huge curiosity and rumours among his fans ever since. The BBC Radio 2 host told documentary filmmaker Louis Theroux that he has found love once again during the most recent episode of his Rylan: How to Be in Love podcast, reports the Mirror. The star had been the one asking Louis the questions until the documentary maker switched the focus onto him, posing a question that has been on fans' minds for quite some time. Louis enquired: "Am I right in thinking since starting this series, you've struck up a relationship?" Rylan simply replied: "I have. At the time of recording, I'm very happy." Louis continued by asking whether Rylan is looking to have children in the future, with the host responding: "Yeah. 100 per cent. I want kids. He wants kids." While the star kept his guard up and didn't elaborate further on who the new individual in his life might be, he did reveal how much his new podcast has assisted him in managing his fresh romance. He explained: "I've picked up quite a few tips. It's maybe where I've gone wrong in the past." Rylan has previously opened up candidly about his marriage to Dan Neal and the reasons behind the end of their relationship. The duo initially met when Rylan was presenting Big Brother's Bit on the Side in 2013, with Dan appearing as a contestant on the programme. The couple revealed their engagement in 2014, exchanging vows at a celebrity-packed wedding celebration a year later. In his podcast's debut series, Rylan has dedicated each instalment to conversations with various famous faces and specialists as he embarks on a journey to "rediscover what love is". Throughout multiple episodes, he has chatted with personalities including Tasha Ghouri, Matt and Emma Willis, Calum Best and Stephen Fry, alongside professionals such as Dr Tara Swart and Philippa Perry. Beyond his recent podcast project, Rylan has established himself as a regular voice on our radios in recent times. Following his stint standing in for Zoe Ball on BBC Radio 2 in 2018, he assumed the role permanently when she transitioned to the breakfast programme in 2019. The programme is now titled Rylan on Saturday. Rylan also recently admitted that he wouldn't want to go through a divorce again, describing the emotional toll as deeply painful. "I've had to do it once, and once was enough for me," he confessed. "You still get that weird sharp pain every now and again." The 36 year old continued: "It'll be something so stupid like, 'Oh that glass looks like...' and it's, like, that little. I couldn't imagine going through that twice. I don't know how I'd fare." Huw Edwards' reduced life now from shock new look to vape habit and desperate salary plea
He was once a national treasure with one of the most recognisable faces in the UK - now Huw Edwards lives a very different life away from the spotlight Disgraced BBC newsreader Huw Edwards narrowly avoided jail for making indecent images of children, with his personal and professional lives falling apart in the process. Edwards, 64, was handed a six-month prison sentence, suspended for two years, after he pled guilty to making seven Category A indecent images of children - the worst type - as well as 12 Category B, and 22 Category C images at Westminster Magistrates' Court in September 2024. On his birthday earlier this week, the star looked very different as he was seen clutching three mini bottles of prosecco, his grey stubble a stark contrast to the formerly clean-cut broadcaster known to millions around the UK. Edwards was pictured returning to his car after a brief shopping outing in Swansea, Wales. The presenter was earning more than £475,000 at the BBC as the anchor of News At Ten in November 2023, when disturbing reports emerged that a high-profile, unnamed BBC presenter paid tens of thousands of pounds for explicit photos. A mother claimed this went on from 2020, when their child was 17, for three years, which funded their child's drug habit. He was suspended from the BBC at the time. The TV star was arrested later that year regarding a separate investigation. Edwards' phone was seized which revealed his participation in Whats App exchanges with convicted paedophile Alex Williams, who between the years 2018 and 2021 sent him indecent images of children, including two videos of a boy believed to be between the ages of seven and nine years old. The star's wife of 30 years Vicky Flind released a statement following the original allegation saying her husband was "suffering from serious mental health issues" and receiving in-patient care. But as other accusations came to light, Vicky is said to have launched proceedings to end their marriage, with their £4.75 million home in Dulwich, South London, put up for sale. A source told The Sun: "Vicky had enough of Edwards a long time ago but this is the final nail in the coffin of their relationship. He's put her and their family through hell, so this was inevitable." Edwards continued to sport his wedding ring during his court case but the former couple are said to only communicate through their lawyers nowadays. Professionally, the broadcaster's life has also crumbled. Images from earlier this year showed Edwards frowning as he puffed on a vape. Speaking to the publication, an onlooker said: "He looked a shadow of his former, super-confident self — but there was no mistaking it was him. "He was vaping and coughing and spluttering a bit, and didn't look in the best shape. But he was lucky to be enjoying his freedom when most people think he should have been jailed for what he did." The disgraced star had been the corporation's top-earning newsreader, earning between £475,000 and £479,999 in the year 2023/24 when he was arrested. He continued to be paid by the BBC until he resigned five months later and it appears he hasn't repaid the £200,000 he earned during that period as requested by the broadcaster. BBC Chairman Samir Shah recently told Times Radio: "We've been asking him and asking him and asking him. We're getting legal advice on it", adding: "If Huw is listening, give it back. Just give it back". Edwards was estimated to be worth as much as £3.8 million at his peak, with lucrative book and documentary deals and gigs presenting top awards shows topping up his BBC salary. As Judge Paul Goldspring told the celebrity at his sentencing: "It is not an exaggeration to say your long-earned reputation is in tatters." Speaking at the Royal Television Society (RTS) London conference the month the broadcaster was convicted, BBC director-general Tim Davie stated that he "can't see" Edwards working for the corporation ever again. He will be on the sex offender register for the next seven years, meaning he will have to keep police informed of his whereabouts, with foreign travel difficult.
