US-flagged tanker collides with container ship near UK
A cargo ship hit a tanker carrying jet fuel off the coast of eastern England Monday, setting both vessels on fire and triggering a major rescue operation, emergency services said.
At least 32 people were brought ashore, but their condition was not immediately clear. The operator of the tanker said all of its crew members were safe.
The U.S.-flagged chemical and oil products tanker MV Stena Immaculate was at anchor near the port of Grimsby Monday morning after sailing from Greece, according to ship-tracking site VesselFinder. The cargo vessel, Portugal-flagged container ship Solong, was sailing from Grangemouth in Scotland to Rotterdam in the Netherlands.
U.S.-based Crowley Ship Management, which operates the Stena Immaculate, said the tanker "sustained a ruptured cargo tank containing Jet-A1 fuel," when the container ship struck it, triggering a fire and "multiple explosions onboard," with fuel released into the sea.
It said all the mariners on the tanker were safe and accounted for.
Martyn Boyers, chief executive of the Port of Grimsby East, said 13 casualties were brought in on a Windcat 33 high-speed vessel, followed by another 19 on a harbor pilot boat.
Britain's Maritime and Coastguard Agency said several lifeboats and a coast guard rescue helicopter were dispatched to the scene in the North Sea, along with a coast guard plane.
The site of the collision is off the coast of Hull, about 155 miles north of London.
Coast guards said the alarm was raised at 9:48 a.m. (0948 GMT). Humber Coast Guard made a radio broadcast asking vessels with firefighting equipment and those who could help with search and rescue to head to the scene.
The RNLI lifeboat agency said "there were reports that a number of people had abandoned the vessels following a collision and there were fires on both ships." It said three lifeboats were working on search and rescue at the scene alongside the coast guard.
Video footage aired by the BBC and apparently filmed from a nearby vessel showed thick black smoke pouring from both ships.
Boyers, the port chief, said he had been told there was "a massive fireball."
"It's too far out for us to see – about 10 miles – but we have seen the vessels bringing them in," he said. "They must have sent a mayday out. Luckily there was a crew transfer vessel out there already. Since then, there has been a flotilla of ambulances to pick up anyone they can find."
U.K. Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander said she was being kept up to date on the developing situation.
"I want to thank all emergency service workers involved for their continued efforts in responding to the incident," she said.

The timber rattlesnake is a pit viper that is gray in color, sometimes with a pinkish hue, with black and brown diamond-like shapes across its back. It also has a stripe that runs down its back, which can be orange, yellow or pinkish in color, according to the Smithsonian National Zoo. A timber rattlesnake will prop itself upright and make a rattling noise with its tail when threatened – a warning that it is about to strike. They range in size from about 2.5 to 5 feet on average. The pit vipers can be found across the eastern United States, with sightings ranging from Texas to Iowa to the Carolinas and north to Pennsylvania and New England, according to the National Zoo.

Leawood police give fawns a chance at life after their mother died
Leawood police made some new four-legged friends Monday, when they were called to rescue two baby deer who became orphaned after their mother was injured on a rod-iron fence and died. A resident discovered the two fawns on their property, and Leawood police and animal control departments quickly jumped into action to save the fawns, who were too small to survive on their own. Animal control officer Carla Lewis led the charge. Lewis and multiple officers spent much of the day trying to rescue the fawns and find a place for them to stay. According to a Facebook post from the Leawood police, Lewis eventually found a team that could take care of the deer. 'Without her dedication and determination, they would have slowly starved,' the Facebook post read. According to Lewis, the fawns were taken to Beavers' Den Wildlife Rehabilitation Center outside of Udall, Kansas, and three hours southwest of Leawood. The Beavers' Den is a licensed wildlife rehab center that rehabilitates injured and orphaned mammals, according to its Facebook page. The fawns will likely stay there until they are a little bit older and can fend for themselves in the wild.

Stowaway cat survives 3-week trip from China to Minnesota in shipping container
A cat now calling Minnesota home has braved an international journey of survival and resilience. The people at Northwoods Humane Society in Wyoming, Minnesota, have taken to calling her Stowaway. "It's incredible," said Renee Rude, Northwoods' executive director. "It really is shocking that that happened." The cat was discovered in a shipping container in Oakdale that came all the way from China. Companion Animal Care and Control She isn't up for much attention or activity yet as she builds back her strength. "She's really scared," Rude said. "I can only imagine three weeks in a container without food or water. She must've been eating rodents and drinking condensation." Companion Animal Care and Control, an animal rescue serving Minnesota and Wisconsin, says she was "severely dehydrated and dangerously thin." They brought her to Northwoods, where Rude says she's been eating and drinking. "We don't want to stress her out, so we haven't been able to do an actual exam and assess her health, but she looks OK," she said. "We don't see any obvious injuries or illnesses or anything." The cat was on the move again Tuesday, headed to Pet Haven, a rescue in St. Paul where she has a foster home lined up. "They're going to be able to work with her and help her get to a point where she can trust people and feel comfortable around people," Rude said. "Ultimately, the goal is to find a family of her own and be adopted." Rude says the little cat is a testament to the outsize resilience of animals. "I look forward to hearing in a month's time or two months' time about the turnaround she makes," she said. A permanent name for the cat is still being decided.
