Government holds 17,896 immigration detainees as of July 6, says Saifuddin
The Home Minister said the detainees are housed in 20 facilities operated by the Immigration Department, including 18 permanent depots and two temporary depots.
He added that there are six child detention centres, known as Baitul Mahabbah, for foreign minors.
'The total capacity of Immigration Department detention centres is 21,530 individuals,' he said in a written reply to Syerleena Abdul Rashid (PH–Bukit Bendera).
'At any time, the number detained across all depots ranges between 16,000 and 18,000, depending on arrests and deportations,' he said.
Syerleena had asked for the number of detention centres, detainee counts at each, and whether any hold UNHCR status.
Of the current total, 78% or 13,992 detainees are men, while 22% or 3,974 are women, said the minister.
Four nationalities account for 90.7% of all PATI detainees, led by Myanmar with 7,453 individuals.
They are followed by Indonesia with 3,817 and Bangladesh with 1,136, he said.
'The average detention period ranges from 0 to 3 years. It is noted that none of the detainees as of July 6, 2025 are UNHCR cardholders,' he said.
'However, a total of 4,719 detainees are of Rohingya ethnicity from Myanmar,' added Saifuddin.

'Following a two-day joint sea and land enforcement operation, the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture held a meeting with the Sabah Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Environment and relevant enforcement agencies to address tourism safety issues, illegal operations and enforcement in Sabah. 'In that meeting, I raised several serious weaknesses regarding tourism safety in Sabah, where the safety of tourists is seen as insufficiently protected,' he said in a statement. According to him, statistics showed between 2023 and July 2025, Sabah recorded several tourism-related accidents that caused multiple deaths and injuries. 'In 2023 alone, there were 14 incidents resulting in six deaths and nine injuries; in 2024, 11 incidents with nine deaths and 28 injuries; while in 2025, up to July, there were 23 incidents with two deaths and two injuries. 'These frequent accidents highlight weak safety management and regulatory oversight, which undermine travellers' confidence and damage Sabah's international tourism reputation,' he said. Tiong said during the two-day operation, he personally led officers from the Tourism Licensing and Enforcement Division and Immigration Department, police and other agencies on inspections around Tawau. He said the operation revealed widespread illegal practices, including overloaded tour buses without tour guides; foreigners renting local licences and operating behind the scenes; foreign divers working illegally; non-tourism vehicles carrying passengers; and boats operating with approval. 10 Myanmar Nationals Detained Trying To Cross Into Malaysia
KOTA BHARU, Aug 17 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Army (TDM) detained 10 Myanmar nationals attempting to cross Sungai Golok illegally into Malaysia from Thailand. A statement from TDM's 2nd Infantry Division today said the undocumented migrants (PATI) comprised four men and six women, aged between 19 and 35, with some of them carrying Myanmar identification documents and passports. 'Several personal items, including mobile phones and cash in Malaysian, Myanmar and Thai currencies, were also confiscated.

Chinese traveller to face assault charge tomorrow after KLIA officer hurt
SEPANG, Aug 17 — A visitor from China who allegedly assaulted an Immigration officer at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) last week will be charged at the Sessions Court here tomorrow. KLIA deputy police chief Superintendent Albany Hamzah said statements from five people, including the officer involved, have already been recorded. 'The Chinese woman will be charged in court tomorrow,' he was quoted as telling Malay news portal BH Online. Police are investigating her under Section 186 of the Penal Code for obstructing a public servant, Section 332 for causing hurt to a public servant, and Section 353 for using criminal force against a public servant. Albany said the Immigration Department is also investigating the suspect's immigration record. The alleged assault was reported to have occurred on August 13 at about 7.40pm at the Departure Hall of KLIA Terminal 1. Local media reported that the suspect was with three other Chinese citizens – another adult and two children – during an immigration inspection and turned aggressive when she thought she might miss her flight.
