Sydney Sweeney sparks latest meme stock rally as American Eagle soars 18%
The "Euphoria" and "Anybody But You" star will headline a fall campaign for the retailer, American Eagle announced Wednesday. Shares of the company surged nearly 18% in Thursday premarket trading.
Thursday's jump makes American Eagle poised to join the ranks of a new class of meme stocks that has emerged this week. American Eagle's high short interest and inherent brand recognition make it a prime candidate for meme-obsessed retail traders, who have been sending specific stocks on volatile rides in recent days.
GoPro and Krispy Kreme came into the fold after the pair saw wild trading in Wednesday's session. Earlier in the week, meme traders had focused attention on Opendoor Technologies and Kohl's.
More than 13% of American Eagle shares available for trading are sold short, according to FactSet data. The stock generated discussion among users on the Wall Street Bets Reddit page, a popular forum for retail investors, beginning Wednesday night. As investors betting against the stock move to cover their hefty short position, it can fuel some artificial buying in the shares.
Sweeney's campaign will center on American Eagle's denim jeans, according to the company. That comes as retailers lean into the growing preference for the fabric amid a boom in popularity for Western styles.
"With Sydney Sweeney front and center, she brings the allure," Jennifer Foyle, the company's president and executive creative director, said in a statement. "We add the flawless wardrobe for the winning combo of ease, attitude and a little mischief."
Thursday's action can provide a reprieve for the battered stock, whose shares have tumbled around 35% so far in 2025 through Wednesday's close.

In another video, the camera tracks Sydney's body as she lies on the ground with her shirt unbuttoned, pulling her jeans on. 'Genes are passed down from parent to offspring, often determining traits like eye color, personality, and even hair color,' she says, before looking to the camera and adding, 'My jeans are blue.' These two videos now appear to have been removed from AE's socials after they were met with a lot of criticism for a number of different reasons. Many took issue with the hypersexualized nature of the ads, while others called out the way the clip of her pulling her jeans on seemingly pays homage to an extremely controversial 1980 Calvin Klein ad starring a then-15-year-old Brooke Shields. On top of that, there's been a whole lot of backlash to all the emphasis on Sydney's 'great genes' as a blonde, blue-eyed, white woman. For context, phrases like 'good genes' and 'great genes' have historically been used in the language of eugenicists, who believe that the genetic quality of the human population could be improved by selective breeding. I don't know about you, but my TikTok is filled with people impersonating Sydney's cursive voice. And now, Doja Cat has joined in on the trend. In the comments, one person wrote: 'u know its bad when even doja makes fun of it 😭,' while someone else added: 'my jeans are damp cuz i just peed my pants.' Elon Musk is both the wealthiest person in the world and a major contractor for the U.S. military as the head of SpaceX. When the billionaire talks about war and its potential consequences, we need to listen, whether we like it or not. But if you've been paying attention to what Musk has been saying about the positive aspects of war in recent months, you're probably hearing things that make you nervous. 'One can debate the cause, but not the correlation. The Romans lamented this constantly.' It's no secret that Musk is obsessed with the Roman Empire. But he seems to really be fixated on the supposed causes of its fall, using those claims to rationalize his own right-wing worldview in 2025. Musk believes the world is in danger of collapsing because people aren't having enough kids. Well, to be more precise, he's worried wealthy people from Western countries aren't having enough kids. Musk also seems to suggest that peace is bad for a country's growth with his tweet on Monday. He was more explicit about his idea that war might be good a couple of months ago. Musk gave an interview to Bloomberg News back in May, appearing remotely via video link for the Qatar Economic Forum in Doha. If Musk thinks that war can be good or have a 'cleansing function,' it certainly incentivizes people like him to push for more violence around the world. The Washington Post conducted an analysis that concluded Musk's companies have gotten at least $38 billion in contracts, loans, subsidies, and tax credits from the U.S. government over the past two decades. When the U.S. military and intelligence agencies launch more satellites, Musk's companies benefit. And his personal wealth owes a lot to government handouts. Not a single dollar was stripped from Musk's companies during his great ransacking of the federal government with DOGE, according to the news outlet NOTUS. But Tesla did lose out on an electric vehicle tax credit with the 'Big Beautiful Bill,' the issue that seemed to really divide Musk and Trump. Musk insisted he didn't care about the tax credit, but Trump repeatedly said it was the reason Musk was upset with him. Musk and Trump have an uneasy relationship, especially after the Tesla CEO accused Trump of being in the Epstein files. But Musk still can influence policy, as was demonstrated when Trump threatened to cut off funding to his companies, but reporting from the Wall Street Journal noted SpaceX was just too vital to discard. And as long as Musk is considered crucial to the functioning of the U.S. military, we should probably pay attention to the things he says about war. Especially when he's making claims that it's good for any given society.
