ANP denounces Jirga system restoration

PESHAWAR: Awami National Party (ANP) central spokesman Engineer Ihsanullah strongly denounced the federal government's decision to restore the Jirga system, calling it an unconstitutional and regressive step that undermines provincial autonomy, justice, and democracy.
The party central spokesman Engineer Ihsanullah in a statement here on Monday stated that the decision was a direct attack on provincial autonomy and an attempt to impose a tribal system on the entire province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
He argued that the 25th Constitutional Amendment, which merged FATA with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, was a historic step towards integration and however, restoring the Jirga system undermined this integration.
The ANP spokesman highlighted that the judiciary and judicial system were provincial subjects under the 18th Amendment. The federal government's move to impose Jirgas on Khyber Pakhtunkhwa was seen as a violation of these powers.
The party's leader pointed out that Jirgas had historically been used to deny justice to women, children, and minorities, and to impose informal punishments, which was against the principles of justice and equality enshrined in the Constitution.
He reminded that the Supreme Court had already declared Jirgas and their punishments illegal in a 2020 judgment. The party demanded that the federal government respect this ruling.
ANP demanded immediate dissolution of the committee formed to oversee the restoration of the Jirga system.
The party insisted that any reforms or changes in the judicial system should be done in consultation with the Provincial Assembly.
ANP suggested modernizing district courts to provide timely justice to rural areas and establishing special judicial benches for women and minorities.
ANP viewed the restoration of the Jirga system as a regressive step that would push Khyber Pakhtunkhwa back into a dark age.
The party vowed to oppose this decision in every forum and reaffirmed its commitment to building a modern, just, and constitutional province.

Senate slams 'honour killing' in Balochistan, urges swift justice

Listen to article The Senate on Thursday passed a resolution condemning the brutal murder of a man and a woman in Balochistan, carried out on the orders of a tribal jirga. The resolution was adopted with overwhelming support, with Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F) being the only party that declined to endorse it. Tabled by Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Senator Sherry Rehman, it described the killings as a gross violation of human rights, the Constitution, and the laws of Pakistan, Radio Pakistan reported. According to the resolution text, the House 'strongly and unequivocally condemns the heinous incident wherein a woman and man were publicly and illegally executed in broad daylight, following a so-called jirga decision.' It termed the murders a premeditated act of vigilante violence and rejected any attempt to justify the act under the guise of tribal customs or so-called honour. Calling the killings 'barbaric,' the resolution stated that they must not be masked by cultural or traditional pretexts. 'It is in fact a crime that has gravely dishonoured the nation. Any attempt to justify such a crime based on 'custom or honour' is completely unacceptable, as is the entire process of victim-blame,' it noted. Affirming that honour killings constitute murder under the law, the resolution stressed that they must be treated and prosecuted accordingly. It warned that the rule of law cannot be selectively applied, nor should tribal or informal justice mechanisms be allowed to undermine constitutional protections and due process. It called for all those involved—whether directly or indirectly, including individuals who convened or sanctioned the jirga—to be brought to justice without delay. It also asked that law enforcement agencies be directed to handle such cases strictly under the relevant provisions of the Pakistan Penal Code, without compromise or discretion. Grateful to all the parties across the opposition/ treasury benches in the Senate of Pakistan for generously supporting a House Resolution against the heinous practice of murdering women in the name of "honour". Thank you @BBhuttoZardari for always supporting women's rights ! We… — SenatorSherryRehman (@sherryrehman) July 24, 2025 Furthermore, it recommended that the Ministries of Law and Justice and Human Rights conduct a thorough review of enforcement gaps in existing laws dealing with so-called honour crimes and propose actionable reforms for robust implementation. It emphasised the need to train and sensitise public prosecutors and investigating officers to treat honour crimes and gender-based violence as serious criminal offences warranting proactive prosecution. The resolution also called on provincial and federal governments to launch awareness campaigns rejecting the concept of honour-based violence and reinforcing the supremacy of constitutional law over tribal or feudal traditions. Read More: 14 suspects arrested over 'honour killing' of couple in Balochistan Following the passage of the resolution, Senator Rehman expressed her gratitude to fellow lawmakers across party lines for supporting the motion. In a post on X, she wrote: 'Grateful to all the parties across the opposition/treasury benches in the Senate of Pakistan for generously supporting a House Resolution against the heinous practice of murdering women in the name of 'honour'.' The killings, which occurred last month, gained widespread attention after a video surfaced showing the couple being shot. The man who killed the woman was her brother, acting on behalf of the family and tribe, provincial police chief Moazzam Jah Ansari told Reuters. The chief of the tribe, Sher Baz Satakzai, had ordered the killing, he added. Satakzai was among those arrested, according to Chief Minister Sarfraz Bugti, who addressed the media in a news conference in Quetta, the provincial capital. "We will make sure that they all will be prosecuted," Bugti said. In response, law enforcement officials arrested the chief. He is currently in police custody on a 10-day physical remand.

Opposition alliance announces two-day APC in Islamabad

Listen to article An alliance of opposition parties, including Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), has announced a two-day All Parties Conference (APC) to be held in Islamabad on July 31 and August 1, Express News reported. The announcement was made at a joint press conference by Tehreek-e-Tahaffuz-e-Ain Pakistan (TTAP) leaders and senior opposition figures in Islamabad, including TTAP chief Mehmood Khan Achakzai, PTI leader Salman Akram Raja, Babar Awan, Barrister Saif, Mustafa Nawaz Khokhar, and others. Achakzai stated that this was the first political alliance not formed at the behest of any institution. 'This is not a theatre for political entertainment. Our alliance will continue until the establishment of a neutral Election Commission, supremacy of the Constitution, and restoration of parliamentary sovereignty,' he said. 1-آئین کی بالادستی 2-قانون کی حکمرانی 3-پارلیمنٹ کی سپریمیسی 4-آئین کی بحالی 5-ایک خود مختار غیر جانبدار الیکشن کمیشن کا قیام جس میں تمام پارٹیوں کی منظوری شامل ہو 6-شہباز شریف کی ناجائز حکومت کا خاتمہ جب تک ان تمام چیزوں پر عمل نہیں ہو جاتا تحریک جاری رہے گی محمود خان اچکزئی — Tehreek Tahafuz Ayin-e-Pakistan (@TTAP_OFFICIAL) July 24, 2025 He criticised the formation of the current government, alleging that it was imposed through fear and manipulation. 'The party that won the general election had its leader jailed. The May 9 verdicts handed 10-year sentences even to minors. This is not justice; this is the mockery of a democratic state,' he added. Achakzai, who is also chief of the Pashtoonkhwa Milli Awami Party, vowed to campaign against the government from 'street to street and town to town,' extending the movement from Gilgit-Baltistan to Gwadar. He called for a peaceful protest movement and said the upcoming APC would also invite representatives from state institutions. 'We will support every oppressed group in the country without any conditions,' he said. Majlis Wahdatul Muslimeen (MWM) Chairman Allama Raja Nasir Abbas echoed similar concerns, questioning the legitimacy of recent political decisions, particularly those regarding reserved seats. 'If democracy existed in Pakistan, the ruling on reserved seats would not have come. Parties welcoming such seats are like those consuming carrion — it's unethical,' he said. 'The use of force has never succeeded. It is always the people who win in the end,' he remarked. The Senator Abbas warned that any attempt to block peaceful protests would be the responsibility of the government. A major protest under the banner of the Tehreek-e-Tahaffuz-e-Ain (Constitution Protection Movement) is also planned for August 5. Moreover, Raja said the movement aimed to steer the country back in the right direction and restore constitutional democracy. 'This country cannot be run through coercion. Our movement is constitutional, ideological, and peaceful,' he said. 'No one should attempt to misuse our protest to justify state repression.' He alleged that PTI supporters were being punished solely for their political affiliation. 'Today, walking on the street or raising your voice has become a crime. These are rights recognised by the Constitution, the United Nations, and our religion,' he said. پاکستان میں آئین کو روندا جا رہا ہے نو مئی نو مئی کر کے اپ بچوں کو پانچ پانچ سال 10 10 سال کی سزائیں سنا رہے ہیں مگر ان کا کیا جنہوں نے پاکستان کا آئین روندا ہے جنہوں نے پاکستان کا آئین پامال کیا ہے ان پر کون سی سزا لگائیں گے — Tehreek Tahafuz Ayin-e-Pakistan (@TTAP_OFFICIAL) July 24, 2025 The opposition alliance vowed to continue its movement through constitutional and peaceful means, asserting that any crackdown would only strengthen their resolve. The upcoming APC is expected to set the course for a coordinated political strategy across party lines.

Religious parties reject the Abraham Accords

ISLAMABAD: Leaders of various religious political parties, Wednesday, while condemning Israel's aggression against Palestine and Iran have rejected the Abraham Accords as well as the Two-State solution to the Palestine issue, saying they will strongly oppose any such move. Speaking at a National Consultation Conference organised by Milli Yakjehti Council (MYC), they also defended Iran's right to defend itself. In a declaration they warned of strong resistance to any attempt by the government of Pakistan to recognise Israel. The council also expressed concern over the steps allegedly being taken against religious seminaries. The declaration further stated that it was Iran's right to have a nuclear programme. It called upon the government to adopt a firm stance on the issues of Kashmir and Palestine. The council demanded the prime minister convene an all-parties' conference on the situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) and Balochistan while demanding the production of all the missing persons countrywide. It also demanded that the Council of Common Interests (CCI) be activated again, asking the government to address the problems being faced by the flood-affected people. 'Interest-based system should be abolished and Islamic economic system must be enforced in the country,' read the declaration. The council said it rejected the laws stipulating punishments for marriages under the age of 18. It warned the government of a countrywide protest campaign in case it did not repeal the laws. The declaration also called for finding solutions to political issues through political means. 'Or, otherwise, the system would be in jeopardy,' it warned. Addressing the council meeting, Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam Fazal (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman said that interest-based system should be abolished by January 1, 2028. 'If the government does not keep its promise, we will take it to court,' he threatened, saying in that case things would become difficult for the government. He said that certain elements were trying to pave the way to change the status of Kashmir by abolishing formerly FATA status. Maulana Fazl said that geographical changes have begun in the region under a global agenda. He accused both the government and Taliban for drone attacks, saying common people were being targeted in such attacks by both sides. He said that the state should not back down even an inch in its stance while fighting against terrorism. He said that in KPK and Balochistan, there was no government existing owing to lawlessness. He said that in the past the people of Swat and Waziristan were forced to evacuate and migrate to other parts of the country as the state wanted to launch the military operation against the terrorists but this has not benefited as the terrorists have once again attained hold on certain areas. The conference also expressed serious concern over national as well as international issues and condemned recent incidents of violence countrywide. Speaking on the occasion, Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) chief Hafiz Naeemur Rehman said that the silence of Muslim countries on the ongoing genocide in Palestine amounts to indirect support for Israel. He emphasised the urgent need for Muslim states to adopt a bold and principled stance on global Muslim causes, including Palestine and Kashmir. 'The situation in Palestine is not just a regional issue—it is a battle for the liberation of Al-Quds,' he stated. 'Over 100 innocent Palestinians, including women and children, are being martyred daily under brutal Israeli bombings. Where are the so-called human rights champions of the West now?' He strongly condemned the Abraham Accords and warned that any move by Pakistan towards normalization with Israel would be met with strong resistance. 'Pakistan must never recognise Israel. Our founding father, Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, called Israel an illegitimate child of the West,' he reminded. Highlighting the resilience of Hamas, Rehman declared, 'This is a war of truth versus falsehood. Hamas has acted within the framework of international law. We must clearly and unconditionally stand with them. Pakistan should even consider allowing Hamas to open a diplomatic office.' He criticised the US President Donald Trump's double standards, noting his swift response during Iran's counterattacks on Israel, while remaining silent when India committed aggression in Kashmir. 'Pakistan doesn't need any mediation by Trump when United Nations resolutions on Kashmir already exist,' he said, reaffirming that no compromise would be accepted on the Kashmiris' right to self-determination. The JI leader demanded that the government publicly disclose what practical steps it has taken to eliminate interest (riba) from the economy. 'There must be a strong and collective voice for the eradication of interest-based systems,' he urged. He also warned against attempts to weaken or repeal the blasphemy laws and protect offenders under the guise of legal reform. 'Any group or individual misusing these laws should be held accountable, but efforts to abolish or undermine them must be firmly resisted,' he said. Hafiz Naeemur Rehman praised Iran for its bold stance against Israeli aggression and called for Muslim unity across ideological and national lines. 'This is the time to awaken our rulers and stand with the oppressed—whether in Gaza or in Kashmir. Only a bold and sincere stance can restore the dignity and leadership of the Muslim Ummah.' Addressing the conference, Allama Arif Hussain Wahidi strongly condemned the killing of a man and a woman in Balochistan. He said that 19 men opened fire on a woman, calling it an act of cowardice rather than bravery. He demanded that those responsible be brought to justice and that the incident be pursued to its conclusion. Allama Wahidi also voiced concern over rising inflation, saying it has made life unbearable for the public. He urged the government to immediately reduce petrol prices and take effective measures to control inflation and ease the economic burden on citizens. Referring to Operation Bunyanum Marsoos, he said the operation had sent a strong message to India and delivered a firm response to the enemy. Other religious leaders at the conference also stressed the need for unity and solidarity in facing national challenges. Copyright Business Recorder, 2025
