EC issues notice to Vaishali MP, her JD(U) MLC husband for possessing two voter ID cards

The Election Commission (EC) on Thursday (August 14, 2025) issued notice to Vaishali MP Veena Devi of the LJP(RV) and her husband Dinesh Prasad Singh, a JD(U) MLC, and sought their reply regarding their possession of dual EPIC numbers by August 16. The Electoral Registration Officer (ERO) of Muzaffarpur Assembly constituency in Bihar has issued notice to them following the claim made by Leader of Opposition in the Bihar Assembly Tejashwi Yadav that both leaders have two EPIC numbers. In a post on X, the Rashtriya Janata Dal leader said Mr. Singh has two EPIC numbers in Muzaffarpur district, and he is a voter of two Assembly constituencies — Sahebganj and Muzaffarpur — like his wife. 'How did he get two different EPIC cards in two different Lok Sabha constituencies and two different Assembly constituencies in the new draft rolls published by the Election Commission? Will the Election Commission accept its irregularities and mistakes in SIR? Is this not electoral fraud by EC to ensure NDA's victory?' Mr. Yadav asked. Late on Wednesday night (August 13, 2025), the former Deputy Chief Minister issued a press release stating that the Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) MP possesses two EPIC voter ID numbers. Mr. Yadav claimed that she is a voter of two Assembly constituencies in Muzaffarpur district — Sahebganj and Muzaffarpur Assembly constituencies. He also stated that the two EPIC numbers are showing two different ages in both Assembly seats. He asserted that Ms. Devi had filled two enumeration forms in the ongoing special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Mr. Yadav pointed out that she must have given her signature at two places and asked the EC how she got two EPIC numbers of two different Assembly constituencies. He asked the poll body whether it would send her a notice. Mr. Yadav held a press conference at his official residence on Wednesday and claimed that Muzaffarpur Mayor Nirmala Devi and her two relatives have two EPIC numbers each. On August 10, he had claimed Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Kumar Sinha also has two voter ID cards of two different Assembly constituencies. Later, the EC issued notice to all the leaders who the RJD leader had alleged possessed these cards. Meanwhile, Mr. Yadav on Thursday welcomed the Supreme Court's interim order in the SIR exercise with its directions to the EC to publish the list of approximately 65 lakh names excluded from the draft rolls. The Leader of the Opposition said he has been raising since day one the issue of irregularities in the SIR. He asserted that with the interim order of the Supreme Court, the EC will now be 'exposed' when the poll body will publish the list of 65 lakh people. He also added that the Opposition will not let allow genuine voters to be excluded from the voters list. 'First on 27th June, I had raised the voice against the process of SIR and its timing. However, I was ridiculed by the ruling parties. News of foreign nationals was planted from sources, and a personal attack was made on me. We met EC officials but their action was never cooperative,' Mr. Yadav said. 'I want to thank all the leaders of opposition be it Sonia Gandhi ji, Rahul Gandhi ji, Mamata Banerjee ji, M.K. Stalin ji and other leaders for extending their support. We will have a close eye on the activities of the EC and will keep fighting for it. Since the beginning, the Election Commissioner has not done a single press conference. The NDA is going to face a humiliating defeat in the upcoming Assembly election and now the EC will now be exposed with the SC orders,' he added.

Vision 2047 targets to make UP $6 Tneconomy, raise PCI to Rs 26L: Yogi

Lucknow: Concluding the marathon 24-hour debate on Vision 2047 in the state Assembly, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said on Thursday that the blueprint sets the target to make UP a $6 trillion economy. "The govt is also committed to raising the per capita income to Rs 26 lakh per annum by 2047," he added. The CM asserted that Uttar Pradesh would lead India's march to 'Viksit Bharat'. "India can become a developed nation only when every state meets its responsibility, adding that UP would be at the forefront of this mission," he said. Sharing that the blueprint for Viksit Uttar Pradesh has been built on 3 themes and 12 sectors, the CM said: "Building on eight years of progress, the government aims to make Uttar Pradesh a $1 trillion economy by 2030, and chart a course toward $6 trillion by 2047, increasing the state's GDP share from 9.3% to at least 16%, he stated. Yogi said that the current national per capita income is about Rs 2 lakh, while Uttar Pradesh's average is much lower. "The goal is that by 2047, the state's per capita income should be at least Rs 26 lakh annually, equal to or above the national average," the CM said, adding "there is a roadmap to raise the average growth rate to 15%." The CM said that to advance the three themes -- Arth Shakti, Srijan Shakti and Jeevan Shakti -- 12 major sectors have been identified, based on Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 5T principle of Trade, Tourism, Technology, Tradition, and Talent. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like This is What Your Fingers Say About Your Personality Tips and Tricks Undo "Short-term, medium-term, and long-term goals will be pursued in these sectors step-by-step so that by 2047, Uttar Pradesh becomes the country's leading state in economic, social, and cultural fields," he added. Thanking the 187 MLAs from both the ruling party and the opposition who took part in the discussion during the marathon, the CM lauded their serious and engaging participation, calling the marathon discussion a testament to the strength of democracy and the dedication of its members. Asserting that only holistic development would help achieve the goal of 'Viksit UP and Viksit Bharat', Yogi said that 2047, the centenary year of India's independence, will be the year of 'Ram Rajya' in which basic facilities like education, medical care, housing, water, and electricity would be provided to every person. Yogi said that the state planning department would make the final draft of the 'vision document' after coordinating with experts from various sectors and NITI Aayog. The exercise would involve gathering suggestions invited over a period of one month. The final Vision Document will subsequently be put forth before the state assembly for its formal approval. "This is not merely a 'Ghoshna Patra' but a 'mahaabhiyan' of UP's pledge, hard work, and astha," he said. "2047 sirf tithi nahi hai…ye hamare lye sapnon ka gantavya bhi hai …(2047 is not just a date…it is also a dream destination for us…)," he said. The CM said that history will be created when 25 crore people work towards one goal. He said that 2047 was a 'sankalp' to make UP the most prosperous state and put forth the ideals of humanistic values before the world. Yogi said that this would be a journey of fulfilling the dreams of youth and women. He said that this would be the hope of a farmer working in a field, the hope of a student dreaming of a golden future, and the hope of a labourer who is laying the foundation of development. He said the state would have to be established as a 'growth engine' of the country. At the same time, he said, the state will seek to sync the cultural and spiritual heritage with development and a modern outlook. "UP will become the centre-point of spiritual awakening," the CM said. He added that Viksit Bharat, Viksit UP was no less than a pledge for the govt. After she praises Yogi, Samajwadi Party expels MLA Pooja Pal

After Samajwadi Party MLA from Chail Pooja Pal showered praises on chief minister Yogi Adityanath for bringing the killers of her husband Raju Pal to justice, she was expelled by Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav on Thursday for 'anti-party' activities and indiscipline. Pooja Pal. (HT Photo) The letter issued by the SP chief read, 'You have been involved in anti-party activities, however, you didn't stop it even after being warned, which has caused damage to the party. The work done by you is against the party and serious indiscipline, hence you are being expelled from the party with immediate effect. At the same time, you are also being relieved from all the posts of the party.' Pooja Pal was earlier in the news when she had cross-voted for the Bharatiya Janata Party candidate during the Rajya Sabha elections in Uttar Pradesh in February 2024. In June, the SP had expelled three rebel MLAs for cross-voting during the Rajya Sabha polls but spared Pooja Pal then. After her expulsion, Pooja Pal said to the media, 'Perhaps you could not hear the women in Prayagraj, who were even more worried than me. But I am their voice, I have been elected as an MLA and sent to the assembly. I am the voice of mothers and sisters who have lost their loved ones. They have sent me here. All people in Prayagraj, who were disturbed due to Atiq Ahmed, have been given justice by the CM, not just to Pooja Pal. I have been saying this from day one, even when I was in the party.' 'I have been expelled today. I stand by my statement even today. I became an MLA later but I am a victim woman first, a wife could not stand the incident that occurred with us. They speak of PDA. I, too, belong to a backward community, I was troubled, I stepped out of my house because my husband was killed in broad daylight. They have proven that they are completely against PDA,' she said. Pooja Pal, who participated in the 24-hour discussion in the assembly on the Vision Document 2047 by the BJP government, had said during her speech that chief minister Yogi Adityanath gave justice to many women like her. 'Everyone knows who murdered my husband. I want to thank the chief minister for bringing me justice and hearing me when nobody else did. The CM gave justice to many other women like me in Prayagraj by bringing in policies like zero tolerance that led to the killing of criminals like Atiq Ahmed. 'Mere pati ke hatyare Atiq Ahmed ko Mukhya Mantri ne mitti mein milaane ka kaam kiya'... I raised my voice when I saw that no one wanted to fight against criminals like Atiq Ahmed... When I started getting exhausted with this fight, CM Yogi Adityanath gave me justice,' Pooja Pal had said in the state assembly earlier on Wednesday. Meanwhile, deputy chief minister Brajesh Pathak attacked the Samajwadi Party for expelling Pooja Pal on the eve of Independence Day. 'To be expelled on the eve of Independence Day for supporting the vision of Viksit Bharat in the House, shows the poor thinking of the Samajwadi Party. The House unanimously accepted that the Samajwadi Party's policy is anti-woman,' Pathak said
