LinkedIn Names Howard University as the Nation's #1 HBCU Based on Alumni Career Success
Washington, D.C., Aug. 18, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- LinkedIn has unveiled its inaugural Top Colleges rankings of higher education institutions in the United States, naming Howard University as the #1 HBCU. According to LinkedIn, the list identifies the schools that 'set graduates up for long-term success.' The ranking used LinkedIn data to gauge the career outcomes of alumni through an analysis of job placement rates, senior-level roles, undergraduate internships, and alumni entrepreneurship. LinkedIn also evaluated how quickly a recent alumnus finds a job or enters graduate school after graduating with an undergraduate degree. The company points out that the return on investment in a degree from a top program includes higher earnings and more rapid career progression. 'Howard University's recognition as the top-ranked HBCU by LinkedIn is a powerful testament to the strength of our academic community and the global readiness of our graduates,' said Ben Vinson III, Ph.D., president of Howard University. 'It reflects the intentionality behind our holistic model of education — one that combines academic rigor, faculty excellence, and real-world engagement. At Howard, we are cultivating leaders who are not only prepared to meet the challenges of today but are poised to shape the future across industries and around the world.' LinkedIn's methodology ranked U.S. colleges based on five pillars: job placement, internships and recruiter demand, career success, network strength, and knowledge breadth. It used LinkedIn hiring data and InMail outreach data. Importantly, the company also evaluated the strength of each college's network, including how connected alumni are to one another across graduating classes. In addition to Howard, Morehouse College, Spelman College, North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, and Hampton University rounded out the top five HBCUs in the rankings. 'Graduates of top programs often land jobs sooner, build strong professional networks and advance into leadership faster,' LinkedIn noted in its website announcement on the rankings. 'That's why it's so important for prospective students to know which programs are worth the investment.' The top LinkedIn ranking is the latest acknowledgement of Howard's reputation for excellence in education, research, and career development. Earlier this year, Howard was recognized with a Research One (R1) designation, reserved for institutions with the highest levels of research activity among American universities. Howard was also named a top 'Opportunity College and University – High Access and High Earnings' by the American Council on Education (ACE) and the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching for facilitating social and economic mobility. Forbes most recent colleges and university rankings also named Howard as the top HBCU. U.S. Earlier this year, U.S. News and World Report ranked Howard as the #1 HBCU for undergraduate programs in business, computer science, economics, engineering, and psychology and the top HBCU for graduate programs in criminal law, constitutional law, dispute resolution, intellectual property law, healthcare law trial advocacy law, economics, English, fine arts, history, political science, and speech pathology. Among all graduate programs, Howard placed #12 in Social Work, the highest ranking among colleges and universities in the Washington, DC, Maryland, and Virginia area as well as among other HBCUs. About Howard University Howard University, established in 1867, is a leading private research university based in Washington, D.C. Howard's 14 schools and colleges offer 140 undergraduate, graduate, and professional degree programs and lead the nation in producing African Americans with professional doctoral degrees. Howard is the top-ranked historically Black college or university according to Forbes, the only HBCU with an R1 research institution designation, and the only HBCU ranked among U.S. News & World Report's Top 100 National Universities. Renowned for its esteemed faculty, high achieving students, and commitment to excellence, leadership, truth and service, Howard produces distinguished alumni across all sectors, which have included the first Black U.S. Supreme Court justice and the first woman U.S. vice president; a Nobel Prize laureate; Schwarzman, Marshall, Rhodes and Truman Scholars; prestigious fellows; and over 170 Fulbright recipients. 5 Steps To Turn New LinkedIn Connections Into Paying Customers
If your inbox is full of conversations that go nowhere, you're building rapport for too long before you sell. The pain of staying polite is losing the sale to someone bolder, faster, and clearer. You don't need to get warmed up. You need them to buy. Most LinkedIn users treat new connections like first dates. They tiptoe around the real conversation, share generic pleasantries, and wonder why nothing happens. The ones who win are direct, valuable, and impossible to ignore. You don't win clients by being nice. You win by being useful and direct, but never pushy. And never saying anything you wouldn't say in real life. Here's how. Transform your cold outreach into client conversations Your first line determines whether they read or delete. Small talk is fine, but they need to know you get them. They need to feel like you're not sending the exact same message to a thousand other people. Open with something they cannot argue with. Open with something that speaks to their soul. You already know what that is because you understand your dream client. When you nail this approach, your message opens with a bang. Instead of "Hi Lydia, I hope you're well," try calling out what you've noticed about Lydia's LinkedIn content or business. Specificity shows you've done your homework. Generic messages get generic results. Being direct saves everyone time, including yours. If it takes more than one sentence to explain, it's not clear enough. Your offer should be so simple they can explain it to their partner over dinner. Complexity kills conversions. Think outcome, not process. "I can definitely get you 5 qualified calls each week through LinkedIn" beats "I provide comprehensive social selling solutions leveraging multi-channel engagement strategies." Paint a picture of their success in one sentence. Make the result so clear they can see themselves achieving it. Numbers they care about are more effective than testimonials they won't read. DMs are different to posts. Your proof line should make them think "I want that result." Focus on metrics that matter to their business. Put yourself in their shoes. "My last three clients increased qualified leads by 40% in 60 days" carries more weight than "I'm passionate about helping businesses grow." Link to specific strategies when you have them. Every business owner understands percentages and timeframes. Give them both. Make your track record impossible to question. No options, no waffle, just a next step. Multiple choices create decision fatigue, and confused prospects don't buy. One clear action creates momentum. Remove every barrier between their interest and your calendar. "Shall we book a 15-minute call this week to see how we get the same result? [link]" works because it's specific and simple. Not "Let me know if you'd be interested in learning more" or "Would you like to explore how we might work together?" Speed matters. Make booking with you easier than thinking about it. Share something new that earns another reply. Your follow-up should add value, not just nudge. Think of each message as an opportunity to demonstrate expertise. Don't waste a message. Send an insight about their industry. Share a quick win they can implement today. Reference something specific from their recent content. Persistence paired with value wins. Random check-ins lose. Make every touchpoint worth their time. Convert connections into clients with speed and clarity Your LinkedIn success comes down to respecting your future client's time while demonstrating your value. Skip the rapport-building marathon. Jump straight to how you solve their problems. Start with their problem, make your result clear, add the right kind of proof. Make the next step clear and follow up with value only. Write like they're already interested, and move with speed. Your next client is one direct message away. Learn how to write a LinkedIn profile structure that attracts coaching clients.
