KLIA Aerotrain glitch fixed in 15 minutes, not a breakdown, says Loke
He said that in any system, such operational disruptions are common and must be tackled through continuous system and software maintenance.
'It wasn't a breakdown but a technical glitch, a software bug. In any system, there will be occasional disruptions, bugs, and other issues that must be addressed and fixed.
'The disruption was resolved within 15 minutes,' he told reporters after opening the Asean-China International Rail Transit Forum 2025 here today.
Loke expressed regret over the disruptions in the past month but clarified that the Aerotrain service continues to record high passenger volumes, with 1.5 million passengers a month and hundreds of trips daily.
He also urged Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) to pay serious attention to the contractors and vendors involved in maintaining the service.
On Monday, the media reported calls from several quarters urging the Transport Ministry to establish a special committee to investigate the cause of service disruptions, which allegedly occurred at least five times since the service resumed on July 1.
On the third-generation Electric Train Service (ETS3) project to Johor Bahru, Loke said it is progressing as planned, contrary to claims by some parties.
'It is definitely inaccurate to say there was a delay. I have already mentioned a few months ago that the ETS3 project will be implemented in phases. It is not a delay,' he stressed.
He clarified that the ETS3 is already operational up to Segamat (first phase), while the second phase to Kluang is set to begin service before August 31, followed by the third phase to Johor Bahru Sentral by the end of the year.
He said the ministry is awaiting confirmation on the launch date for the second phase, as the first train will be driven by a VIP, adding that an official announcement will be made later this month.
'The ministry is committed to starting the service before August 31,' he added.
Meanwhile, Loke said Malaysia is looking forward to realising greater rail connectivity with China, particularly in facilitating cross-border rail freight.
He emphasised that such connectivity cannot be achieved by Malaysia alone and requires strong collaboration with other Asean member states, especially Thailand and Laos, to ensure seamless regional integration.
'We cannot do it alone. We must work together with our Asean partners to enhance connectivity between Asean and China,' he said, adding that improved cooperation would strengthen logistics networks and economic ties across the region.
Earlier in his opening remarks at the forum, Loke said the event symbolises the strengthening of Asean-China cooperation and reflects a shared vision for a smarter, greener and more connected future.
He said the global rail sector is undergoing a renaissance, driven by climate urgency, digital disruption and economic transformation, stressing that for Malaysia, investing in rail is no longer just about infrastructure but has become a national economic and environmental imperative. — Bernama

Flag blunder gives patriotic Akmal ammunition to position himself as an undisputed race, religion defender
AS SOON as a politician opens his mouth to speak on any issue – big or small – the whole matter becomes politicised. The latest storm to hit the headlines is the brouhaha over the national flag – the Jalur Gemilang – which was flown upside down at a Chinese-medium school. DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke claimed that 'certain quarters' were trying to politicise the incident but by virtue of his party status, he laid himself opened to prompt retaliation. UMNO Youth chief Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh – the ever the party sentinel and warrior – returned fire, pointing out that Loke himself had politicised the issue by touching on the incident. Both politicians are playing politics but the more controversial of the two is Akmal who is ever on the look-out for sensitive issues to exploit and play to the gallery. True to form, Akmal went ballistic seeing the flag incident as a form of disrespect to your country. If you turned the flag upside down, it means you do not love your country. You have no fire of patriotism in your belly. Patriotism is such a loaded word today for it can be used or misused to suit one's political purpose. In the Malaysian context, when you say you are a patriot, it means you are largely fighting for your race and religion. Patriotic opportunist But when you say you are not patriotic, it connotes that you do not want to defend your country with your life. The argument can be further stretched to mean that you have no right to call Malaysia your home and must therefore be stripped of your citizenship or be treated like second-class citizens. It is not too difficult to fathom what Akmal is really aiming at when he beat his breast and screamed: 'I am a patriot!' The 'mistake' – accidental or not – happened in a Chinese-medium school and therein lies the crux of the matter: Akmal seems to be questioning the loyalty of an ethnic race, not just the students. Although the Education Ministry has promised a tough response against SJKC Chung Hua in Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilan where the incident took place, Akmal might have other ideas in mind. He, too, wants stern action to be taken but what type of punishment can satisfy his political appetite? Let's make an educated guess. At a time when the existence of Chinese-medium schools has always been questioned, Akmal perhaps wants to see all such schools transformed into national schools where, he believes, patriotism is deeply embedded. Political mileage If this becomes a reality, this UMNO tiger would receive a tremendous boost to his political ambition and could be well on his way to a higher rank in the party or even gets a shot at an important cabinet post in the future. Akmal picks and chooses which topic can light up the country and in patriotism, not tariff reduction (a difficult subject), for he finds this is an ideal platform to whip up a perfect storm. Like clockwork, the Barbarism SOP kicks in whenever we approach a 'sensitive' patriotic season. Say the wrong thing, share the wrong post, blink in the wrong direction — and congratulations, you're suddenly 'anti-national.' The witch hunt begins. Patriotism also means you must defend king and country and a flag represents the fighting spirit of the citizens. So, when Akmal sees a flag flying upside down, it is equivalent to burning it or stomping on it. And when the incident happened in a Chinese-medium school, it is unforgiveable because it seemingly calls into question the loyalty of the Chinese community. Akmal's diehard fans may even postulate that Chinese schools do not teach patriotism or inculcate its spirit in their pupils and therefore they pose a threat to national security in the future. This is a simplistic argument which does not carry much weight because the Chinese – and all the other ethnic communities for that matter – have always called Malaysia their home. Plus pilots high-speed toll payment system with number plate recognition
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 7 — Malaysia is set to launch public trials of a barrierless toll booth system using automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) technology to ease congestion and modernise its toll collection process. The trial, led by highway operator Plus Malaysia, will begin in mid-August on the North-South Expressway and involve thousands of selected participants, Singapore's The Straits Times reported. If successful, the ANPR pilot will serve as a key component in Malaysia's nationwide multi-lane fast flow (MLFF) toll system, which authorities aim to roll out by 2027. 'This pilot is a crucial step in our shift towards the MLFF system,' a source familiar with the project was quoted as saying, adding that it would assess ANPR's performance in real traffic conditions. The Works Ministry has endorsed the move to a MLFF system through a business-to-business model, with Deputy Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan telling Parliament this week that it will not impose any financial burden on the government. Unlike current systems that require vehicles to slow down or stop, ANPR will identify vehicles via high-resolution cameras and charge tolls automatically using linked e-payment accounts. The ANPR trial on Plus highways will start at nine toll plazas between Hutan Kampung and Sungai Dua in northern Penang. To participate, users must download a free mobile app, register their vehicle number, and link a payment method such as a credit or debit card. The system will use ANPR cameras to scan number plates, match them with a centralised database, and deduct tolls automatically without requiring drivers to slow down or tap a card. Although vehicles in the trial will still pass through existing toll barriers, future phases may remove the physical gates entirely as the system matures. ANPR has been shown to process tolls up to four times faster than radio frequency identification (RFID), which, like SmartTAG, still requires vehicles to reduce speed when approaching toll lanes. The Plus initiative mirrors similar systems in places like Singapore and Taiwan.
