Aaron Rodgers and other Steelers vets to sit in preseason opener vs. Jaguars

New York Post12 hours ago
New Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers will not be taking his first snap in a black and gold uniform this weekend.
The former league MVP will sit in Friday's preseason opener against the Jaguars in Jacksonville, head coach Mike Tomlin confirmed Thursday, along with several Steelers starters, including wide receiver DK Metcalf, cornerback Jalen Ramsey, linebacker T.J. Watt and defensive lineman Cam Heyward.
'I've identified some guys that won't be playing in this game this week,' Tomlin said, according to Mark Kaboly of 'The Pat McAfee Show.' 'It has nothing to do with injury. They need less runway to take off, to be quite honest with you, because of their experience and where they are in their careers. Oftentimes, I preserve them through this process while providing more opportunities for those that need more preparation and more opportunity to display their talents.'

Rodgers, who last appeared in a preseason game two years ago with the Jets, is listed first on the depth chart, followed by veteran backup Mason Rudolph.

Rookie Will Howard is third, although he's currently sidelined due to injury, followed by former Dolphins QB Skylar Thompson.
Rodgers, 41, officially turned the page on his unremarkable Jets tenure earlier this offseason after agreeing to a one-year, $13.65 million deal with Pittsburgh.

'It starts with Mike Tomlin,' the Super Bowl-winning quarterback said of his decision to link up with the Steelers in June. 'I've been a fan of his for a long time. There are a few iconic franchises in the NFL. I played for one of them for 18 years. This is another one of those.'

Rodgers, who began his career in Green Bay in 2005, had put football on the back burner during free agency as he tended to matters in his personal life.
He signed on the dotted line in June when 'things improved a little bit where I felt like I could be all in.'

'I had great conversations with Mike and [general manager] Omar [Khan] throughout the process,' said Rodgers, who previously suggested this season could be his last.

When Rodgers does make his Steelers debut, he'll be doing so as a newlywed after revealing in June he's been married 'a couple of months.'
He confirmed his relationship with a woman named Brittani last December.
Rodgers appeared in all 17 regular-season games with the Jets last year, when he threw for 3,897 yards, 28 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.
He missed most of the 2023 season after rupturing his Achilles in Week 1.
The Steelers will host the Buccaneers in their second preseason game next week and will visit the Panthers in the preseason finale on Aug. 21.
The Jets host Pittsburgh in the Week 1 opener on Sept. 7.

Patriots unveil statue honoring iconic quarterback Tom Brady

The New England Patriots unveiled a 12-foot statue of legendary quarterback Tom Brady outside their Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, Massachusetts, on Friday, honoring the player who guided the team to six Super Bowl titles. The ceremony revealed a towering bronze image of Brady with one arm aloft in triumph, the likeness mounted on a six-sided base in a nod to his championship seasons with the Pats. The total 17-foot height marks the 17 AFC East division titles that Brady won as a starting quarterback. He went on to win a seventh Super Bowl title with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but he'll be forever linked to the Patriots -- a fact that team owner Robert Kraft acknowledged when Brady was inducted into the team's Hall of fame last year. "This is quite overwhelming to me," the 48-year-old said. "I feel extremely honored, deeply grateful and, if I'm being honest, kind of old. "I'm also a little surprised, because usually they don't build statues until you're really old, like (Mike) Vrabel and (Tedy) Bruschi. Vrabel, a former Brady teammate now in his first season as head coach of the Pats, was at the ceremony. Brady, who was taken 199th overall in the 2000 draft and was the fourth-string quarterback before emerging as a superstar, poked a little fun at himself, too. "I never dreamed I'd be standing here two and a half decades later made of bronze and frozen in time," he said. "It actually feels pretty appropriate given my 40-yard dash time." Brady's statue was revealed before the Patriots' pre-season game against the Washington Commanders. It stands in the plaza outside the Patriots Hall of Fame. Across 23 seasons, three with Tampa Bay, Brady started in 333 regular season matchups and 48 playoff games -– the most of any NFL quarterback –- with 278 wins overall, another league record unlikely to be touched for years to come. The three-time NFL Most Valuable Player holds the league records for completions (7,753), pass attempts (12,050), passing yards (89,214) and touchdown passes (649). "Tom Brady's journey proves that it's not where you start, but where you finish that counts," Patriots owner Robert Kraft said in remarks opening the ceremony. "Tom wasn't just the face of our franchise, he was the heartbeat. It's hard to overstate what Tom accomplished. He didn't just rewrite the record books, he practically authored a new volume. This statue ensures his legacy will be preserved for generations to come." bb/js

Patriots 2nd-Round Draft Pick Makes Stunning First Impression in Preseason

Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The New England Patriots, coming off of two straight, dismal 4-13 seasons did not take long to announce that they intend a major comeback in 2025, as their first game of the NFL preseason kicked off Friday night. The Patriots 2025 second-round draft pick did the honors, as the Patriots hosted the Washington Commanders at Gillette Stadium. Under new head coach Mike Vrabel, the Patriots used the pick in somewhat surprising fashion, taking a running back with the 38th overall selection. FOXBOROUGH, MA - JULY 28: TreVeyon Henderson #32 of the New England Patriots heads to the field during training camp at Gillette Stadium on July 28, 2025 in Foxborough, Massachusetts. FOXBOROUGH, MA - JULY 28: TreVeyon Henderson #32 of the New England Patriots heads to the field during training camp at Gillette Stadium on July 28, 2025 in Foxborough, Henderson out of national champion Ohio State — last year's Big Ten leader in yards per carry with 7.1 — became the highest pick of a running back by the Patriots since former coach and general manager Bill Belichick took Georgia's Sony Michel in 2018 with the 31st pick. Henderson quickly announced his presence, and the anticipated resurgence of the six-time Super Bowl-winning Patriots franchise, on the opening kickoff from the Commanders' Matt Gay. Henderson received the kick on the Patriots' goal line — and instantly broke off a 100-yard return for a touchdown, the first time he touched the football in an NFL game, though admittedly a preseason one. TREVEYON HENDERSON 100-YD KICKOFF RETURN TD WITH HIS FIRST NFL TOUCH 😱 (via @Patriots) — SportsCenter (@SportsCenter) August 8, 2025 The Patriots' first possession from scrimmage ended with a fumble by quarterback Drake Maye — last year's No. 3 overall draft pick. But on first down the next time the Patriots got the ball, Maye pitched out to Henderson who swung around the left side to run for an 18-yard gain. TreVeyon Henderson moved at x2 speed… — Carlos A. Lopez (@LosTalksPats) August 8, 2025 "The Patriots haven't had a true elite running back since Corey Dillon was in New England in 2004. Still, during the team's 20-year run of success, they were blessed with multitudes of versatile backs who routinely gave defensive coordinators headaches," wrote Ryan McLaughlin of the Fansided Patriots site Musket Fire on Friday. "Enter TreVeyon Henderson, who fits that mold perfectly," McLaughlin continued. "The team is optimistic he can be a better version of James White and Kevin Faulk, who are arguably the best pass-catching running backs in Patriots' history." The preseason game against the Commanders appeared to also announce Vrabel's intention to put increased emphasis on the running game in the Patriots' offense this season. The 18-yard gain was Henderson's only carry of the first quarter, but fifth-year veteran Rhamondre Stevenson ran seven times for 36 yards, and Washington's 2020 third-round draft pick Antonio Gibson, now in his second year with New England, carried three times for 16 yards to open the game. Maye himself ran the ball twice for 16 yards and a touchdown before being removed in favor of backup QB Josh Dobbs. More NFL: Patriots Rookie Already Emerging As Potential 1,000-Yard Breakout Star
