Kolkata: ‘Bengal Files' trailer launch disrupted; director alleges dictatorship
'All the (media) cameras have captured how a Central Board of Film Certification-approved film's trailer was stopped. We have got all the permissions. It was being screened in a private place (hotel banquet). This is anarchy, this is dictatorship, this is fascism,' Agnihotri told the media.
The trailer was scheduled to be launched in a leading multiplex in Kolkata. On Friday Agnihotri alleged that the event was cancelled. The film's team then decided to launch it in a hotel on Saturday.
'Just landed in Kolkata and learnt that the venue for the trailer launch of #TheBengalFiles is cancelled. Who wants to suppress our voice? And why?' Agnihotri wrote on X on Friday.
On Saturday when the trailer was being launched, the event was stopped mid-way. Agnihotri could be seen arguing with officials of the Kolkata Police.
'The trailer was stopped by the police due to political pressure. Why is the voice of the filmmaker being stifled? Ask him why it was stopped,' Agnihotri told media persons while pointing towards an officer of the Kolkata Police.
The police officer didn't reply to questions posed by the media saying that his seniors in Kolkata Police would comment.
Meeraj Khalid, joint commissioner of police (headquarters) didn't respond to calls and messages.
Written and directed by Agnihotri, the film focuses on the events of the Direct-Action Day and the 1946 Great Calcutta Killings. It is scheduled for release on September 5. The cast features Mithun Chakraborty, Anupam Kher, Darshan Kumar and Pallavi Joshi among others.
His earlier film The Kashmir Files also stoked controversy in 2022.
Earlier this month, Agnihotri had said in a post on X that the West Bengal government filed multiple FIRs against him and the film. The Calcutta high court, however, put an interim stay on the FIRs.
'Multiple FIRs have been filed against me by the West Bengal govt for making #TheBengalFiles. The Hon'ble High Court has stayed them. Why do they want to silence us? Why are they so scared of the truth? I will not be silenced,' he wrote on X on August 5.
The incident, however, triggered a political row between the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) and its arch rival, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
'In the land of the legendary filmmaker Satyajit Ray, West Bengal has once again witnessed a shameful episode that shatters every limit of democratic decency. Words are simply inadequate to condemn what has just taken place,' Sukanta Majumdar, union minister and state BJP president wrote on X.
'This is not merely disgraceful—it is yet another chilling reminder of how Bengal today is being ruled under jungle-raj, anarchy, and authoritarian arrogance, intoxicated with the politics of appeasement. I strongly and unequivocally condemn this despicable act. Today, not only Bengal but the entire nation has seen how a filmmaker and his team of artists were insulted and humiliated in broad daylight,' he added.
'Earlier a film named The Kashmir Files was launched and BJP lost the assembly elections there. Now they are making The Bengal Files. People of the state are not interested in such films. They know it very well and that's why they are creating a ruckus to get media attention,' Debangshu Bhattacharya, TMC state spokesperson told the media.

‘Quota anomalies' in 69K teachers' recruitment in UP: Candidates protest outside minister's place
Alleging reservation scam in 19,000 posts in 69,000 assistant teacher recruitment, a large number of candidates from reserved categories staged a protest outside basic education minister Sandeep Singh's residence at Mall Avenue here on Monday. Policemen taking away one of the protestors in Lucknow on August 18. (HT photo) From there, police sent them to Eco Garden in vehicles. The education directorate at Nishatganj was turned into a fortress in the wake of the protest. 'We have not yet got justice in this recruitment,' the protesters claimed. They said if the government does not take the initiative for hearing in the Supreme Court and keeps getting dates after dates from the apex court, they will stage sit-in protests every day in Lucknow and also gherao the residences of BJP leaders. Talks were held with additional chief secretary, basic education, Deepak Kumar, on the issue but nothing came out of it, said one of the protesters Dhananjay Gupta. On the call of Pichda Dalit Samyukta Morcha's state president Sushil Kashyap and state patron Bhaskar Singh, the 'aggrieved' candidates claimed to have sent hundreds of letters to the Chief Justice of India in which it was, as per the protestors, clearly stated that for the last 12 months the plaint of the candidates was not being heard in the Supreme Court and dates were being given one after the other due to which they were very upset. The protesters said in such a situation, the apex court should start hearing their case so that they can get justice. Sushil Kashyap and Bhaskar Singh alleged that in the said recruitment, OBC category has been given only 3.86% reservation instead of 27%, SC category has been given only 16.2% reservation instead of 21% and thus in this recruitment, Basic Education Rules 1981 and Reservation Rules 1994 have been violated. They also alleged that the original selection of this recruitment was not being made public for the last 5 years despite the order of a division bench of the Allahabad high court issued on August 13. 2024, 'which shows that there has been a huge reservation scam in the said recruitment'. Basic education department officials said the matter was pending in the court and they will abide by the order of the Supreme Court.

AAP hits out at Delhi, Central govts for failing to ensure security to students
New Delhi, Aug 18 (UNI) The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) today criticized the BJP-led central and local governments, accusing them of failing to ensure security in the national capital. Two schools and a college in Dwarka received bomb threats today, reigniting concerns over the safety of students in Delhi. Soon after this the AAP trained its guns on the BJP government. Delhi Chief Minister and AAP national convenor Arvind Kejriwal questioned the lack of progress in investigations, saying on social media, "Delhi schools are repeatedly targeted with such threats, yet not a single culprit has been caught, nor has any action been taken to date." He blamed the BJP's "four-engine" governments — referring to the party's rule at the Centre, Delhi Lieutenant Governor's office, Municipal Corporation, and neighboring states for the alleged law and order breakdown. Atishi, AAP leader and leader of Opposition in the Delhi Assembly, echoed the concerns, saying, "Children and parents are living in fear, but BJP's governments have failed to provide them security." She also criticized Delhi Police that functions under the Union Home Ministry, for its inability to prevent recurring threats. Anurag Dhanda, AAP's national media in charge, claimed that despite persistent threats over the past two years, the police under Home Minister Amit Shah has been unable to do anything. Other party leaders, including Jasmine Shah and MCD leader of Opposition Ankush Narang, highlighted the prolonged nature of the issue, with Narang calling the BJP's governance in Delhi a "complete failure."

Vivek Agnihotri 'will take legal course' if The Bengal Files release is not allowed in West Bengal: 'If they stop us...'
Filmmaker Vivek Ranjan Agnihotri on Monday said he would go the legal route if the release of his film The Bengal Files is stalled in West Bengal. Vivek Agnihotri's film, The Bengal Files, is slated to release in September. The trailer launch of the film in Kolkata was disrupted on Saturday. Agnihotri claimed the event was first cancelled by a multiplex and then moved to a hotel where power supply was disrupted and police turned up asking if permission had been taken. "We will go by the Constitution. We will go legally. If they stop us, we will take the legal course. What can we do? We are common citizens like you… We will pray that sanity prevails and the state government does not do it (stop the release),' the filmmaker said at a press conference here while hitting out at the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC government in West Bengal. The Bengal Files, which is slated for release on September 5, revolves around the Calcutta riots of August 16, 1946, which were triggered after the All-India Muslim League called for Direct Action Day to demand a separate homeland. 'This is an Indian film. I am telling you the truth," Agnihotri said. Known for films such as The Kashmir Files and The Tashkent Files, Agnihotri also addressed the many controversies surrounding his latest release, including an FIR by Gopal Chandra Mukherjee's grandson, Santanu Mukherjee. Gopal Mukherjee is said to have played a pivotal role in the resistance against the Muslim mob violence in 1946. Santanu claims Agnihotri's film refers to his grandfather as a butcher. Agnihotri said Gopal Mukherjee in his film is an inspired character and not central to the plot. "I will not go into his history. Watch Santanu's interview. I can give you all the links. There is an interview of Gopal Mukherjee on BBC. In that interview, what he has said, we have only shown that much. I have nothing to do with Gopal Mukherjee's life, politics. He was a hero, and I have shown him as a hero," he said. "I respect Gopal Mukherjee a lot. His grandsons work with TMC. There is a compulsion there… They have done it legally. We are giving a legal answer to that," he said. Agnihotri claimed the film is his attempt to reveal hidden truths. He said he aims at showing "the untold stories of India". 'Our purpose is very clear. I make films on Hindu civilization. That is why I make films on Hindu history. I do not consider myself capable of making films on Islamic history or Christian history," he said, adding that filmmakers like Mani Ratnam and Vishal Bhardwaj have already made movies on the Islamic history of Kashmir through "Roja" and "Haider". Agnihotri said the censor board passed The Bengal Files without any cuts though it went through the examining committee and then the revising committee. "This film was made with a lot of responsibility and sincerity. No one can object to this. Bengalis will be proud of this film." The Bengal Files stars Mithun Chakraborty, Saswata Chatterjee, Anupam Kher, Pallavi Joshi, Priyanshu Chatterjee, and Darshan Kumar.
