Police watchdog clears Toronto police officers in fatal shooting of teen
The Special Investigations Unit says a Toronto police officer stopped a car with six people inside on Sheppard Avenue the night of April 20 when there was a shootout involving a male occupant.
It says the male fired a shot at an officer and two officers fired back, and both the male and police shot multiple rounds.
The SIU says the male, who was later identified as a 16-year-old from Toronto, was struck by gunfire.
It says he was taken to hospital and later died from his injuries.
The SIU says the officer's use of gunfire constituted reasonable force, and there's no basis for proceeding with criminal charges in the case.

Swimmer drowns in Silver Lake after jumping out of canoe

Police say officers were called for reports of a swimmer that had gone missing after jumping out of a canoe into the water at approximately 4:30 p.m. Saturday. The OPP Marine Unit and firefighters were called to aid in the search. The man was recovered and pronounced dead at the scene. His identity was not released. Silver Lake Provincial Park is located about 110 kilometres west of downtown Ottawa. An investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information that could aid the investigation is asked to contact the OPP at 1-888-310-1122.

Man identified after being found in burnt vehicle in Popkum, B.C.
After finding a man dead in a vehicle in B.C.'s Fraser Valley on July 27, police are now identifying the victim. The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) has identified 22-year-old Hamza Fazil of Surrey, B.C., as the deceased victim who was found in a burnt vehicle. Fazil was found in a vehicle around 11:35 p.m. on July 27, in the 52100-block of Cheam Road in Popkum, B.C., an area near Chilliwack close to cottage resorts and a water park. Police believe the incident was targeted with links to the B.C. gang conflict, according to an IHIT statement on Saturday. Cpl. Sukhi Dhesi of IHIT said the investigation is still in its early stages. "Investigators are looking to build a timeline of Mr. Fazil's activities prior to the homicide," Sukhi said. "We would urge anyone with information about him or his activities in the days leading up to his death to contact investigators." IHIT says that Fazil was reported missing by his family members, and he was last seen around 9 p.m. on the day of his death in the 13300-block of Old Yale Road near Holland Park.
