Berhampur: Hundreds of people took part in the Tiranga Yatra in Berhampur on Saturday, organised by the BJP's Ganjam district unit to mark 'August Kranti Diwas'. The rally, led by Union education minister
Dharmendra Pradhan
, covered around two kilometres from Ramalingam Park to Netaji Subash Chandra Bose chowk.
The event began with Pradhan garlanding the statue of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and concluded at the statue of Netaji Bose. BJP supporters, members of various civil organisations, ex-servicemen, among others, participated in the rally to generate patriotic spirit ahead of the celebration of Independence Day and to praise the armed forces for carrying out the recent Operation Sindoor.
State higher education minister Suryabanshi Suraj, Berhampur MP Pradeep Kumar Panigrahy and several BJP MLAs from Ganjam also participated.
Passing through Berhampur's main market areas, the rally also commemorated the Quit India Movement of 1942. "It's not merely a movement, but it was the symbol of united courage and faith across the country which helped to achieve freedom," said Pradhan.
The Union minister urged the citizens to unite for a self-reliant India and to help achieve Viksit Odisha and Viksit Bharat, as envisioned by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
"There is a need for a people's movement for the use of swadeshi products to strengthen our economy," he added. Berhampur MLA K. Anil Kumar said the rally was a tribute to freedom fighters and soldiers who sacrificed their lives for the nation.
Earlier, Pradhan visited the Maa Budhi Thakurani Temple and offered prayers. He also inspected the temple's redevelopment work. "I am glad to know the redevelopment work of the temple is going on in full swing and is expected to be completed soon," he said.

TMC gives Vivekananda reply to BJP's SP Mookerjee demand

1 2 Kolkata: Union minister Sukanta Majumdar on Sunday sought the renaming of Sealdah station as Syama Prasad Mookerjee Terminal. Trinamool, on the other hand, demanded that it be named after Swami Vivekananda, who arrived at the Sealdah station after his return from Chicago. "State govt should send a proposal to rename Sealdah station after Syama Prasad Mookerjee. We will forward that to central govt and get it sanctioned. It should be named Syama Prasad Mookerjee Terminal. It will be a tribute to those who were forced to leave Bangladesh following attacks," Majumdar said after flagging off the first air-conditioned passenger train from the station. TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh said: "We have a port named after Syama Prasad Mookerjee. Why not name the station after Vivekananda? Sealdah station has a historical connection with Swamiji. However, changing the name of a station requires multiple permissions and that will not be easy." In 1897, after his return from Chicago via sea route, Vivekananda took a train from Budge Budge and got down at Sealdah station. The protests started while Majumdar was flagging off the train. When the BJP supporters tried to counter them, it ended up in a scuffle. Majumdar, who had left the station area by then, came back after getting to know about the scuffle. INTTUC supporters said they would continue to shout 'Jai Bangla' if attacks on migrant workers didn't stop. TMC supporters started shouting slogans against BJP after they saw Majumdar. "We have not come here for any political programme. It is a programme of central govt and this will help thousands of daily passengers. TMC is afraid of Centre as they don't want systemic intensive revision of voter list in Bengal," Majumdar said. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). AAP and BJP trade charges over flood management, ‘graft'

New Delhi: Even as Delhi battles monsoon flooding, the matter continued to raise political tempers, with PWD minister Parvesh Sahib Singh Verma on Sunday highlighting efforts to eliminate waterlogging, even as Aam Aadmi Party's Delhi state president Saurabh Bharadwaj accused the BJP-led govt of destroying official records to conceal corruption in drain desilting work. I nspecting the Connaught Place Outer Circle waterlogging site, Verma said he had visited the same location late at night the previous day, when heavy rain had caused water to accumulate along a 100-metre stretch near a popular eatery. He attributed the problem to a century-old British-era barrel drainage system that had been narrowed over time by surrounding construction, restricting the natural flow of water. "The original drainage structure, built over 100 years ago, was altered, leading to severe flow restrictions. To address this, we have installed two high-capacity pumps to ease the load on the drain and push water forward more efficiently," he said. He questioned why, despite a high court order, govt was evading a third-party audit of desilting work and refusing to respond to repeated queries on the issue. He added that over the past several days, whenever it rained in Delhi, the streets were completely submerged. "We have even seen waterlogging in Connaught Place. Yesterday, on Raksha Bandhan, sisters were stuck for three to four hours on the roads, waiting to tie rakhis. Everyone saw this. Seven people died in one incident when a wall collapsed due to waterlogging. Among those who died were two children, two women, and three men. " Hitting back, Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva said, "Before accusing us of avoiding a third-party audit of drain desilting, Saurabh Bharadwaj should first clarify whether it is not true that between 2015 and 2018, due to Kejriwal govt's failure to carry out desilting, an NGO had to approach Delhi High Court demanding an audit of the desilting work."
