Grab Malaysia launches 'Kerana Asean' campaign in support of Malaysia's Asean 2025 chairmanship

KUALA LUMPUR: Grab Malaysia has officially launched its "Kerana Asean" campaign in partnership with the Foreign Ministry in support of Malaysia's Asean 2025 chairmanship.
Grab Malaysia managing director Adelene Foo said the campaign aims to raise public awareness and education about the significance of Malaysia's Asean chairmanship and its vital role in fostering regional cooperation and integration.
The campaign is part of Grab's #GrabBersamaASEAN initiative, aimed at making Asean's mission of inclusivity and sustainability more accessible to the public, not only educating Malaysians and the wider Asean community but also highlighting the tangible benefits of regional integration in daily life.
"Through this initiative, we aim to translate high-level regional priorities into tangible benefits that resonate with Malaysians.
"This aligns with our mission to empower the communities we serve through accessible and inclusive technology, driving a more inclusive and sustainable future.
"We look forward to strengthening Asean integration and ensuring its benefits reach communities across the region," she said.
In support of the 46th Asean Summit, Grab Malaysia also showcased its commitment to inclusivity and sustainability through a special exhibition booth, featuring the company's latest Environment, Social, Corporate Governance (ESG) innovations, including inclusive technology solutions such as the AI Merchant Assistant and AI Driver Companion.
The company's 2024 ESG efforts were also highlighted, including creating sustainable earning opportunities totalling US$12.8 billion for driver-and merchant-partners, with over 99 per cent of driver-partners earning at or above local hourly minimum wages. Furthermore, 600,000 micro, small and medium enterprises were on boarded to the platform.
In 2024, Grab advanced equal opportunity and sustainability by enabling 135,000 Partners With Disabilities and women driver-partners to earn an income, while also reducing waste through AI-driven rReverse vending machines and a refillable milk bottle initiative with Jaya Grocer and Farm Fresh.
The "Kerana Asean" campaign is set to run throughout the year, with a series of online and on-ground activations planned across Malaysia.

Trump, Xi spoke by phone as trade and tech disputes strain ties

Donald Trump and Xi Jinping spoke days before the US president returns to the White House. - Photos: AFP file WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping spoke Thursday (June 5), according to China's Foreign Ministry, as trade tensions roil relations between the world's two largest economies. Relations between the two rivals have soured in recent weeks, with both sides accusing the other of violating a trade truce that brought down tariffs from massive highs. With the fresh conflict threatening the fragile détente, market analysts were hopeful the conversation would pave the way to a trade off-ramp. Stocks rose on news of the call, with the S&P 500 extending gains into a fourth straight day. The phone call between the leaders marks their first known formal contact since Trump took office. The last conversation between Trump and Xi took place in January before the US president's inauguration. The Chinese Foreign Ministry said the call was initiated at Trump's request. The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Rare earths have emerged in recent days as a key flashpoint. The US has accused China of reneging on a promise to relax export controls on such metals needed for cutting-edge electronics. Beijing has been frustrated by fresh US restrictions on the sale of chip design software and plans to start revoking visas for Chinese students. Trump has long said direct talks with Xi were the only way to resolve differences between the nations, but the Chinese leader had thus far been reluctant to get on the phone with his American counterpart - preferring that advisers negotiate key issues. Export controls and US actions on student visas and technology curbs will likely be central to future negotiations. US and Chinese trade chiefs only agreed in Geneva last month to lower tariffs for 90 days, as they worked toward a broader deal. History suggests that any final deal could be a long time coming. In 2018 during Trump's first term as president, the two sides agreed to put their dispute "on hold' after a round of negotiations, but the US soon backed away from that deal, leading to more than 18 months of further tariffs and talks before the signing of the "Phase One' deal in January 2020. One goal for China this time around will be seeking relief from US export controls on cutting-edge chips vital for AI and military advancement. That's likely to be a sticking point in Washington, with both Democrats and Republicans in rare agreement that Beijing poses a national security threat. Beyond strains in economic ties, geopolitical frictions are also growing. Foreign Ministry officials this month protested US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth's assertion at a gathering of military chiefs in Singapore that China poses an imminent threat to Taiwan, a self-ruled island claimed by Beijing. - Bloomberg

Kuala Lumpur to host fourth CEAPAD on July 11

KUALA LUMPUR: The fourth Ministerial Meeting of the Conference on Cooperation among East Asian Countries for Palestinian Development (CEAPAD IV) will be held in Kuala Lumpur on July 11. The meeting will be jointly chaired by Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan and his counterparts from Japan and Palestine, Wisma Putra said on Thursday (June 5). Earlier, Malaysia, Japan and Palestine had co-chaired the eighth Working-level Online Meeting of CEAPAD. The meeting was held for the second time this year with discussions focused on current and future assistance needs for Palestine and preparations for the 4th CEAPAD, the ministry said on its official Facebook page. The meeting was also participated by Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, South Korea, the World Bank, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) and the Islamic Development Bank. Separately, the Japanese Foreign Ministry, in a statement, said participants to the meeting have concurred to working towards the success of the upcoming ministerial meeting. The Palestinian side, meanwhile, updated the participants on the current situation in Gaza and the West Bank, and outlined future assistance needs, it added. The virtual meeting was co-chaired by the director-general of the Middle Eastern and African Affairs Bureau at Japan's Foreign Ministry, Ando Toshihide, Palestine's Acting Planning and International Cooperation Minister, Dr Samah Hamad, and and undersecretary of the International Cooperation and Development Division at Malaysia's Foreign Ministry, Devrin Jeck. CEAPAD is a regional platform initiated by Japan in 2013 to support Palestinian state-building efforts by leveraging the resources, knowledge, and economic development experiences of East Asian nations. In a joint news conference in Putrajaya early this year, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba have reaffirmed commitment to CEAPAD and to support Palestinian development efforts. - Bernama
